Manic Street Preachers – A Design For Life Lyrics
| 2 years ago
|
It said 'work sets you free' above the gates at Auschwitz YOU intellectual toad. Before the industrial revolution was serfdom. The serfs were tied to the land. Most definitely not free. Work LITERALLY came and made them free. Although there is obviously some mockery in the context of the lyrics (ie, it is not REAL freedom) In the context of the song your Auschwitz idea makes no sense whatsoever. It is about the working class. |

The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead Lyrics

"The bit about Charles and the wedding veil could be the singer asking Charles is he really as stiff and correct as he appears or does he have crazy fantasies and ideas like the rest of us"
HA! and of course years later it was found that he actually wanted to be a tampon. No joke. Look it up. |

Sex Pistols – Bodies Lyrics

Oh and that Lydon quote "Can't bring morals into the picture for abortion because it's bad morals to bring a child into the world and not give a toss about it" is actually very insightful.
And he is right of course. People may also think, for example, it's morally wrong for a mother not to give up a kidney for her dying son but no one thinks a doctor should be allowed to overide that decision, cut her open anyway and take the kidney. He can only do it with her permission. Morals don't come into it because it's accepted we all have a right to do what we want to our bodies, even if others think it is wrong.
Anyway, nowt to do with the song, which is just pure Nihilism |

lol @ those that think this is some sort of political anti-abortion song. I really don't think there is any sort of coherent point here. |

Chumbawamba – More Whitewashing Lyrics

Interesting lyrics in this song, given our current obsession with celebrity :
"Flickering pictures hypnotize
We spend our lives watching others' lives
Too much watching to realize
That this is a smokescreen
And this is why people die"
Brilliant lyrics from a brilliant inspiring band. |

Manic Street Preachers – Revol Lyrics
|
Richey's comments on this were : "Revol/Lover - All adolescent leaders of men FAILED. All love FAILS. If men of the calibre of Lenin and Trotsky failed, then how can anyone expect anything to change? Won't get fooled again."
Mr. Lenin - awaken the boy
Lenin, as the revolutionary leader of 1917, 'awakened' socialism/marxism
Mr. Stalin - bisexual epoch
Once again, love/sex symbolism is used - 'bisexual' refers not to Stalin's sexual orientation but his seemingly dualistic appearance.
Kruschev - self love in his mirrors
Kruschev, as Stalin's successor cultivated a different kind of image of himself. "Self-love in his mirrors" possibly refers to his apparent jocular approach in front of the cameras.
Brezhnev - married into group sex
Perhaps this refers to Brezhnev's interventionist foreign policy, more commonly known as "The Brezhnev doctrine" under which the Soviet Union reserved the right to intervene, with its Warsaw Pact allies, in the domestic affairs of satellite states in defense of socialism.
Gorbachev - celibate self importance
As president, Gorbachev witnessed the demise of the Soviet Union - his failure (which Richey drew upon) was his inability to prevent the breakup of his country into smaller independent states.
Yeltsin - failure is his own impotence
Economic meltdown, internal unrest, the reemergence of the communist party, and growing humiliation |

Went to Cuba to meet Castro, never got past sleepy Moscow. Did he intend to go to Cuba, at some point?. I always assumed that was the link? |

Manic Street Preachers – 1985 Lyrics

They formed a bit later than 1985. More like 1988. I think Ants is right with the Miners strike link. The civil war that failed?. There is also mention of Torville and Dean, who won Olympic gold in 1984. Not sure what they're trying to say with that but I'm guessing it's a contrast between the two events of the same year. |

Oh dear, no need to look out for Cerys in future honours lists then? :-)
A great Republican song. Buckingham Palace would certainly make a good bar but I dunno about making them work at Spa, they're hardly qualified at they?. Especially Prince Harry, what did Di say 'Thick! A plank of wood!' |

For me he's saying people need to think more, do more and talk less. People often don't think enough about what they're saying and the hurt it can cause 'Words are very unnecessary. They can only do harm'. So true. |

Kasabian – Reason Is Treason Lyrics

I heard a live version of this where he says at the start 'This is for Winston Churchill, V for Victory!', so I got it into my head that it's talking about how pre-WWII we tried to reason with the Nazi's but that didn't work and when the war started 'reason is treason' It doesn't fit in with the lyrics but there ya go! :-) |

U2 – Sunday Bloody Sunday Lyrics

As a Londoner, this song is very close to me right now. The lyrics 'And it's true we are immune. When fact is fiction and TV reality' are so true. During the IRA years people got used to bombs going off and sometimes, it wasn't even considered a major story. Are we now heading for something similar with Islamic extremism? |

For me this is about the terrorists (on both sides) murdering innocent people and how they think they're fighting a proper war but they're not ' In your head,in your, Head they are fighting', They're zombies and the writer can't work out what motivates them to murder innocent people ' In your head, in your head, Zombie!. What's in your head, in your head? Zombie!' |

Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds – Three Lions '96 Lyrics
| 19 years ago

The best football song ever written, bar none.
It says everything about what it means to be a football supporter. Having faith in your team, while everyone else is 'sneering' at you, even your fellow supporters. Those near misses, like the penalty shoot out in the semi final of the 1990 world cup (Although the actual penalties weren't near misses! lol)
The press and a lot of pessimistic England fans gave us no chance prior to Euro 96 and this is Broudie, Baddiel and Skinner saying 'for gods sake, stop moaning and get behind the team' and it worked!. |

For me, this is about knowing you should be doing something with your life but not being quite able to put your finger on what it is and you'll probably never do it.
"I don't know why I go walking at night
But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk anymore
I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life
Until I find what it is that I've been looking for" |

For me, it's just what it says. Some people now only want to get drunk and worst still, they are told this is a good thing. "As we are told that this is the end". It charts the path of working class people " Libraries gave us power. then work came and made us free, What price now for a shallow piece of dignity?". |

Morrissey – Irish Blood, English Heart Lyrics

A wonderful English Republican anthem, with a nod to Morrissey's Irish heritage.
harperdc and fortunate_boy have said it all on the meaning and ironically, the guy who said it was about the English being racist towards the Irish, sums up what Morrissey is saying about our image. We can't fly our flag our say we're proud of being English, without being accused of racism.
Arwyhn - It was orginally 'racist or racial'. I heard him perform it like this live but it's changed on the album to 'racist or partial'. |
