@ineedsleepingpills - good theory, but they actually originally recorded this song with colin in the band, the demo just never saw the light of day because he quit shortly after.
first shot is the hardest just sounds like an obvious statement about drinking to me...you know, your first shot is always the hardest to get down, after that it gets easier and easier as you get drunker and don't care....haha. |

i feel as if i have seen inspiration from auden in thursday's work before, and that poem was the first i thought of upon hearing this song, though the similarity is only in the very end and is fairly weak... |

to add in the bit about the connection with the name sierra and the desert - desert cities made of gold (especially one where families are often not 'ideal')...sound like las vegas, maybe? the sierra nevada mountain range runs down the west border of nevada.
maybe i'm just drawing this conclusion because i live in nevada so when i hear desert city i automatically think reno or las vegas, and the connection with sierra is an easy one for me since the sierra nevada mountain range is one i've always been very familiar with, seeing as the mountain pass from reno to sacramento begins about 7 miles from my house.
itsjustluck - i interpreted the line more as, is she miserable when she thinks about me ("does she drink when she thinks about me"), or has she moved on ("or doesn't she need to drink?")...saying more, does it make her unhappy when she thinks of me or does she have no feelings left for me at all...like when she thinks of him it's emotionless...

on a more meaning wise note, i agree with the former comments concerning homosexuality and christianity...

notabuttmonkey - that's pretty much what i was thinking on this song. i wasn't thinking he raped them though, more that it was at least somewhat consentual, since jeanie comments that she's not the virgin mary, which would imply that she willingly had sex with him...because being raped isn't a sin, cheating is.
sin-e - i've noticed a subtle war commentary sort of sentiment running through this album as well, but it's not strongly towards one side or the other. |
