Not to nitpick, but it's the River Styx. Either way, that was my interpretation too.

"In ancient times some believed that placing a coin in the mouth of the deceased would help pay the toll for the ferry to help cross the Styx river which would lead one to the entrance of the underworld. If some could not pay the fee it was said that they would never be able to cross the river. This ritual was performed by the relatives." --wiki entry on River Styx

Put simply, if you die alone, you can't cross the river.

Sounds to me like he's referring to the River Styx.

In Greek Mythology, the River Styx seperated the world of the living from the underworld. It was believed that loved ones must place two coins on the eyes of the deceased to pay the boatman, Charon. If the dead failed to pay, they would not be allowed to cross through to the afterlife.

When you take that into consideration, "together we'll cross the river" makes sense. It doesn't matter what you've accomplished in life; you'll ultimately be judged by your relationships with others. No one can escape death, and if you have no loved ones at the end of your days, you won't be able to "cross the river".

Purely speculation, but it seems plausible to me.
