just 39 responses to this song? i'm disappointed. my favourite u2 song. the age old question. who dies? no one answer. looking at it from one perspective. i feel as though the dwarf does indeed die. from the fall. but the dwarf portrayed at the end attending the funeral is actually the woman who becomes the dwarf because of her fickleness. she knew how much the dwarf wanted and adored her. from the moment she saw his eyes staring at him during the camp fire feast. the dwarf manages to give her the ring he had brought before falling and therefore the woman portrayed as the dwarf at the end drops it into his grave. this is also supported by the fact that the woman lies in bed tossing and turning. whilst the viewer is led to "fly" over the room like a spirit. HOWEVER having said this the funeral at the end could very well be the woman's. why? because somehow the dwarf took the courage and lept and took the plunge. and after having done so he becomes a changed man. eventually letting her go. |

this song in my opinion is about enlightenment. in every sense of the word. with more emphasise on the suffering one feels (whatever suffering it may be). first time i listened to it and got images running through my head... someone singing on the banks of a river... he / shes watching the people drowning in the river... the river of life. pain is self chosen... cut of my pride... to me point towards the buddhist scriptures. basically its because of our passions we suffer and because of our pride or ego. when i saw the video for this song... it nearly nocked me out... there's a silhouette shaped like an eye that borders the video... and all the images are happenning within the pupil or rather the iris... kind of like a reflection... "yes... indeed... our pain is self chosen". |

i know its not the right place to post comments on Tool... but...i'm Quite dissappointed with this one. apparently maynard hasnt shaken off his musings with APC. i can't help but notice a lot of APC residue stuck on this song. (mind you APC are a great band in themselves). furthermore the song sounds too much like a rehashing of old tool material... try listening to the intro to vicarious and the section in "Pushit" where maynard starts singing "you know that i will choke until i swallow". too similar in rhythm, melody line and syncopation to be a comfort. what also bothered me was the fact that there wasn't ONE memorable moment on the song. it's very verse chorus verse chorus driven... very very unlike tool. overall after listening to the 13th step album... esp Vanishing, blue, weak & powerless, and previous albums of tool ... this song turns out to be just an extend arm of the aforementioned. sort of like an unhealthy tumour. an unnecessary corrupted replica of what is healthy. turning the pages. lyrically speaking, this has to be the weakest, the most two dimensional tool piece. like it or not. maynard has constructed the lyrics upon a very unstable ground. the ground being the word "vicarious". unlike previous tool songs, this piece is just too shallow. don't think i'm just one of those lovers of the "abstruse"... this piece as i've said is too two dimensional. there lacks usage of surrealistic techniques found through most of other tool pieces... if the remainder of the album flows this way, then i'll be quite dissappointed... i guess artists have their period of "wane"... even tool. |

just talking about the best fucking opeth song. it's definitely about suicide, or the consideration of it anyway. the lyrics are pretty spine tingling. almost like the way a master surrealist paints. the words and phrases are few and turse. but they paint pictures like the most effective poem does. michael, its hard not to label him a genuis (especially in an age when almost everybody is dubbed an artist). he's a fucking poet. lost here is no where searchin home still turning past me all are gone time is now every line paints a vivid image. reeking with sorrow and dispair. fucking brilliant. the music i must admit is what drives this heartwrenching ballad. so theatrical and dramatic... almost like a climax to the perfect greek tragedy. makes me wanna forget about everything and remember how important and necessary music really is in this dreary grey dismal world. the ending... what can i say about the ending? the simple melodies running as though in part writing reminds me of the faculty of memory. the ending speaks to you of reverie. the way i see it... in order to understand REFLECTION. you have to first understand DISPOSITION. and before even that... you really gotta see the whole album as a unified whole. REFLECTION can be summed up in a single line (derived from the lyrics themselves) "you will come to find that we are all one mind"... the whole album reeks of such themes as the "collective consciousness" "unity" "prying open one's third eye"... personally i see the song and most of tool's conceptual work favouring / exploring Eastern philosophy... in Hinduism, the third eye is the eye of enlightenment... and in Hinduism enlightenment means the realisation of one's soul unified with the universe / god... in other words realising the "one mind" nature of all things... in saying all this... i must also add that Buddhist Philosophy also plays part in the piece... lines such as "crucify the ego" etc reflect the supreme buddhist goal... the goal to realise the SELFLESS nature of all things... to remove the misconception of an individual soul... the most remarkable thing about TOOL, has to be the intellectual and artistic backgrounds to their conceptual albums... philosophy (eastern), psychology (carl jung), and western skepticism.
