Nelly Furtado – Say It Right Lyrics 12 years ago
To me I hear a song about two people, who are both in relationships, but very attracted to each other sexually and emotionally.

n the day, in the night
Say it right, say it all
You either got it or you don't
You either stand or you fall

When your will is broken
When it slips from your hands
When there's no time for joking
There's a hole in the plan

I think these first two verses talk about how there's a 'hole in the plan'- Nelly thought she'd be with the same person forever, but now this new attraction has shown up, and it's all or nothing- either she'll stand for her current relationship or fall for another. She either has it, or she doesn't.

Oh, you don't mean nothing at all to me
No, you don't mean nothing at all to me
Oh, you've got what it takes to set me free
Oh, you could mean everything to me

I think this is her struggle with the new attraction- she's fiercely saying 'You don't mean anything to me!' But as others have pointed out, it's a double negative, which means this new attraction DOES mean something to her. Secretly, she admits, this could mean everything to her if she let it.

I can't say that I'm not lost and found
I can't say that I don't love the light and the dark
I can't that I don't know that I am alive
And all of what I feel I could show you tonight

This new attraction has made her feel alive- she's flirted with this person, felt exhilerated in their presence, and finally her walls are coming down and she's ready to throw her current relationship away for a night of passion.

From my hands I can give you, something that I made
From my mouth I can sing you another brick that I laid
From my body I can show you a place, God knows
You should know this place is holy, do you really want to go?

This is her offering herself to the new love- 'I will invest my energy and soul into this'. But the last two lines are a warning to her new love 'My body and my soul are sacred ground. Do you want to enter this?' I love how the song ends on a question. Will you simply profane this sacred space? Are you ready for the consequences of entering holy ground? And it's up to your imagination if the song ends with her cheating or not.

Kevin Rudolf – Let It Rock (feat, Lil Wayne) Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know how people can miss the religious lyrics, but they're pretty obvious to me. However, whether the song is deliberately about biblical events or is using religious imagery to address another issue I don't have a clear opinion on.

However, if I had to chose, I'd day it is a song about corruption and 'sin'. Kevin is saying that a life without greed and corruption 'takes you higher' while living in 'sin' makes you 'hide your face behind a collar'. Plus, his bit about karma, where he says 'wait in line. I got my stuff, which was good because I'm a good person. You, however, will get yours too, and all your negativity will come back to you.'

Add me to the 'Lil Wayne ruined the song' band wagon. In the sense that this song can be played in clubs, Wayne is actually a good addition. But for people like me who spend half an hour trying to dissect lyrical content, he looks like a confused three year old who wandered into a deep discussion and babbled about cookies. Except in his case, b*tches and hoes...

Semisonic – Closing Time Lyrics 14 years ago
To me this song is about how at a bar you're having fun, getting drunk and forgetting about why you came to the bar in the first place. The singer is telling everyone to get the hell out, but people don't want to because they're trying to escape from something in the outside world.

Specifically I hear unrequited love/a break up/something relationship related. Maybe it's just my friends that do this, but when they get drunk, they start texting their exes/the guy they have a crush on/whatever, and usually by the end of the night the guy will wind up coming to pick my friend up. The line 'I know who I want to take me home' to me means that the person came to the bar to escape their love life troubles, but when the bar closes and all the fun times have gone, they know exactly who they wish it was that was by their side, that they wish they were spending the night with. And it hurts that they're not there.

Bush – Machinehead Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, it's pretty obvious the song is about a guy getting into a car crash.

'Breathe in, breathe out'

The refrain is what people do when they're in an emergency situation, such as a car crash. You focus on breathing in and out so you don't start hyperventilating or panicking, and once you have that under control you figure out what to do.

'Tied to a wheel, my fingers got to feel
Bleeding through a tourniquet smile.'

This guy is with his car so much it's like he's tied to the wheel. He spends his leisure time driving, it's his sense of freedom. I think the tourniquet line is a foreshadowing of the car accident. A tourniquet is used to stop arterial bleeding, thus he's been injured.

'I spin on a whim, I slide to the right
I felt you like electric light
For our love, for our fear
For our rise
Against the years and years and years'

He does something stupid in the car: he spins on a whim, slides to the right, and suddenly he seems the other car/person/wall/whatever he hits. The realization in his brain is fast like electricity, but he's too slow to stop the crash. I interpret the 'for our love' ect lines as there was someone else in the car with him, or that he hit someone he cared about.

'Got a machinehead
Better than the rest
Green to red
Machinehead'

This reflects the invincibility he feels about his car before the crash. Green to red means that he should have stopped, he should have been more careful. Now not only is he in an accident, but he doesn't have that cockiness about his machine head anymore.

'Deaf, dumb, dirty
Starting to deserve this
Leaning on my conscious wall
Blood is like wine
Unconscious all the time
If I had it all again
I'd change it all.'

The narrator is passed out wherever he is, in need of medical attention, and periodically comes to consciousness wishing that he could change it all. Blood is like wine- it's dark and red and pouring everywhere.

I think the line 'I walk from my machine' means that, at the end of the day even if the narrator got a bit banged up, he got to walk out of the hospital and back to his normal life. Someone else did not get that opportunity.

The Tragically Hip – It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, this song is about individuality in a relationship.

When the colour of the night
and all the smoke for one life

This line just reminds me of standing by yourself, out in the country side, at the dusk of a winter´s day. You know when you turn around to go back to the city, that you´ll have to deal with friends and family and work and life, but for now, you are the only life.

gives way to shaky movements,
improvisational skills,
a forest of whispering speakers

When you go back to ´life´, you find yourself woefully unprepared. So you fake it, just trying to do the best that you can. I think the forest of whispering speakers are those little voices you hear around you. Your friends and family, who think they know what you should do, your intuition, the voice of God.

let's swear that we will
get with the times,
in a current health to stay
let's get friendship right
get life day-to-day

I think these lines deal with a relationship. It´s like ´Things aren´t perfect, and I don´t know what the hell I´m doing, but I just want a simple, strong relationship with someone I love. Let´s be healthy, let´s be friends again, let´s just live life day to day without worrying about the future and all those things that don´t really matter.

in the forget-yer-skates dream
full of countervailing woes

I think this once again refers to the sense of inadequacy. You´ve shown up at the rink without your skates. Therefore, you can´t play in the game. I think this might refer to a break in the relationship. And I think countervailing woes is sort of the idea that, on one hand, you really want to get on the ice. But on the other hand, it´s overwhelming you, and you´re glad to be able to sit this one out.

in diverse-as-ever scenes
proceeding on a need-to-know

I think this line is just going with the flow of life. Go on a need to know basis.

in a face so full of meaning
as to almost make it glow

This refers to a partner, that feels some strong emotion.

O' for a good life, we just might have to weaken

and find somewhere to go
go somewhere we're needed
find somewhere to grow
grow somewhere were needed.

To me, those lines mean that to really live life, and feel good, you need to weaken. To let down those defenses, and put yourself in a space where you can grow. In the sense of the relationship, I think it means two people finding their own separate paths, because they were stifling each other. Growing up and growing apart.

The Tragically Hip – A Beautiful Thing Lyrics 17 years ago
First of all, I believe the second refrain is 'artifully like the Greeks'.

I personally think that this song is just about purpose in life. I get the sense from this song that it's like everyone was put here on life to do one beautiful thing- and wouldn't it be great if everyone's one beautiful thing outlived them?

k-os – One Blood Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about the hip hop community as a whole. I think of One Blood as almost inbreeding- hip hop is loosing it's creativity, it variance, and it's all begining to look and sound the same, hence it's like it stems from one blood. You cannot create a civilzation out of one blood line, so that's why it's like useless homicide.

However, I'm having issues with the second line. I don't know any French, but I'm pretty sure I keep hearing 'Revolution ( fe la?) coup'. Anyone else?

k-os – Man I Used to Be Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song. It's about growth, but the negative side- you wind up doing things you swore you'd never do, you go against your morals and conscience. Your friends leave you, and you don't know if it's because they can't handle your success, or if you've really been messing up that badly. It's the fight to regain that sense of right and wrong, the search for spirituality and God, the desire to go back and fix all your wrongs, even if you don't know how. It's a really great song.

k-os – Crabbuckit Lyrics 17 years ago
Reading Khan's transcript, I think it describes the song perfectly. I like how, despite the fact that the topic is so heavy (being held back by fears) the song is so light and airy. It's sort of like 'I've got fears, but the only thing I can do is move past them. So I'll live for the moment, and wake up to the critics and nay sayers tomorrow.'

Plus, any rap/hip hop/R&B song that references the Tragically Hip is OK in my book :D

k-os – ELEctrik HeaT - the seekwiLL Lyrics 17 years ago
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I could swear the lyrics to the chorus are actually
'And if you die in Iraq,
whether you're ready or not.'

Anyway, to me this song is about choosing your own path. k-os talks alot about his career and how choosing the path he wanted to has brought him success, and I think the song is just saying that it's not easy to choose to do what truly brings you happiness, and you'll make mistakes, but live for today and follow your heart. I think that's where the title, 'Seek will' comes from.

Our Lady Peace – If You Believe Lyrics 17 years ago
Coming back to this song later, I see the spiritual side more.
Whenever I play this song, I always get the image of Raine as some kind of leader, whether spiritual or political or whatever, and he's calling to people who want a different tomorrow. If you believed it the world he was calling, you wouldn't be afraid to fly. It seems to me to be a revolution song- get up off your ass and do something, because I can see the future, and I need shades.

Disclaimer: No, I don't actually think Madia is a cult leader.

Our Lady Peace – Potato Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
I think that this song is just about having empathy for those around you.

'We live, we die and
I don't know the reasons we ask why
We hate, we push
Recent tests show we all are
Misunderstood'

Those lines basically talk about society, how anti-social and self-absorbed we are as a whole (It reminds me of the first few lines of Happiness... is Not A Fish).

'C'mon now
Something's seizing
You know you lost your mind
You know we all need saving
She found you late last night
You feel the madness gaining
You know you just can't win
You know thisx3'

The singer is talking about someone lost in this culture- he's going insane, lost in self-pity and doubt. So he uses sex as a way out. I'll agree with the one night stand theory. It abates his madness- for a bit. But he knwos he can't win like this- the madness will continue to gain on him.

'But I'm just so tired of waking up on the ground
I, well I never knew the girl
And I never knew the world hurt
I, well I never knew the girl'

Because of his one night stands and self-absorbedness, he never knows the girl. I think the girl references each individual he never actually cares to get to know or care about. He never hears anyone else's story and realizes that they hurt as well.

In fact, if you want to tlook at the POV change (I'm just so tired of waking...) it could be from his actual girlfriend. She knows he's sleeping around and the entire song is from her POV.

'We beg, We pray
But everything still happens anyway'

People, in their self absorbed world, don't ask for trials and tribulations to make them stronger people. They odn't want to work to strengthen their characters. They just demand all obstacles be removed. When they're not, these people trip over them, and instead of learning, they just grumble their way through it, continuing to trip.

'C'mon now
Something's teasing
Your conscience can't decide
She stopped your will from caving
But left you paranoid

You feel the constant straining
She reappears divine
You noticedx3
But I'm just so tired of waking up all alone'

These lines make me think the one-night stand might have been with an underaged girl. She 'saved' him in those moments they had together, but now he's paranoid someone is going to find out. Ironically, because the thought of it stresses him out so much, he looks to the girl as salvation again.

Then again, with his actual girlfriend going 'But I'm just so tired...'

Our Lady Peace – Right Behind You (Mafia) Lyrics 17 years ago
These lyrics are much better than the other set.

Anyway, I never really thought about it until unspokynpoet told us that story, but now that I think about it, it seems like there are two sides to the song.

Obviously the song is about someone close to the singer who isn't doing well. However, the chorus strikes me: in the context of the song, it sounds like a friendly hug, saying 'I'm always there for you.'

But if you think about the lyrics alone, they can also be threatening: No matter what you do to try to get rid of me, I'm following you.

Also, perhaps the song is a mix of the two. The singer wants to make sure his friend is OK, but his desparate need to be there for the friend and constant budding in is more harmful to the friend than helpful.

Just thought I'd throw a few ideas out.

Placebo – Long Division Lyrics 17 years ago
Just a few lyrics corrections (or at least what I heard):

Sick and tired of all this yucky blue
should be
Sick and tired of all this yuppie flu

And all that doll could do
should be
And all that call could do

You see I’m sick and tired of our confrontations
Sick and tired, you stick to me like glue
should be
You see I'm sick of all our confrontations
Sick of how you stick to me like glue.

Mut my take on the song is that the singer is growing closer to another person, and his partner is very suspicious about it (When he called, you were sick and blue). His partner becomes suspicious about everything the singer does. The singer decides he's had enough of the suspicion, the lack of sex (masturbation thing, like Luna said) and decides to finally leave. He knows that his partner will be broken up at first, but that their love was superficial and they'll get over it (Your love for me will die).

Queens of the Stone Age – Go With The Flow Lyrics 17 years ago
Alright. I think the song is about a woman in a relationship, who offers to sleep with a male friend. The song is from the POV of the friend.

'She said "i'll throw myself away,
They're just photos after all"'

The girl is offering to sleep with him. She doesn't care about the relationship she's in- they're not really as happy as they look in the photos anyway.

'I can't make you hang around.
I can't wash you off my skin.'

The guy has sex with her- but he knows he can't be in a relationship with her, even if her current one does break up. But he wants her so badly.

'Outside the frame, is what we're leaving out
You won't remember anyway'

The sex they're having is 'outside the frame'- you don't see it in the happy couples picture she has.

I don't think the line 'you won't remember anyway' refers to her being drunk. I think it's the girl pretending not to know what he's talking about when he brings it up later. She's purposely ignoring the consequences of her actions.

'I can go with the flow
But don't say it doesn't matter anymore
I can go with the flow
Do you believe it in your head?'

The guy realizes she can't have actual relationships, and so says 'Alright, I can accept that you fuck around. But don't try to say this isn't serious- you're cheating on your boyfriend. Do you actually believe your own lies and excuses?'

'It's so safe to play along
Little soldiers in a row
Falling in and out of love'

She sleeps with a lot of guys.

'With something sweet to throw away.
But I want something good to die for
To make it beautiful to live.'

I'm not entirely sure what this is about. I think perhaps he's saying his old, sweet life is being thrown away by all of the drama that sleeping with this girl is causing. But he's so in love with her, it doesn't matter to him.

'I want a new mistake, lose is more than hesitate.
Do you believe it in your head?'

He wishes he wasn't so hopelessly addicted to her- he wants a new mistake, but if he even stops to think about what he's doing for more than a moment he'll loose track of her.

Our Lady Peace – Clumsy Lyrics 17 years ago
I just have to say heartbeats, you got to it first. I was going to post about how 'Throw away the telephone' was the clumsy person disconnecting from their friends when they were in crisis, but I didn't think about the suitcase or radio.

I really think this is one of the most beautifully metaphorical songs ever written- people a lot of people crawl away from the outside world when they are having problems. And 'I'll be waving my hand/watching you drown' is perhaps one of the most clever metaphors ever. I mean, all of my friends who hear the song chuckle and go 'That's violent.' But ti's not- it's what we do everyday. Because sometimes, the only times we notice that those disconnected, clumsy people need help are when they slip up through their everyday actions, and those aren't recognizable. I'm sure we've all had people who we thought were find, but turned out to be addicts/anorexics/whatever, and then we look back to all those tiny instances and go 'Oh. I thought they were simply waving at me. I didn't realize they were trying to signal for help.'

Our Lady Peace – Naveed Lyrics 17 years ago
I already posted a view, but I've just listened to this song again, and I got something a bit deeper out of it.

I've decided that, for now, I think the song is about giving people the dignity of making their own choices. I think in the first verse, Raine is describing a young man who is unhappy with life. He goes out into the world to seek something different, and doesn't find it. The song itself is narrated by his brother (in a spiritual sense, I think). So the brother asks the man about what he's found, but the brother knows that he is unhappy and suicidal.

So, Raine asks the question: should we allow this man this dignity of making his own choice and killing himself, or should we intervene and try to save his life? Eventually, the brother finds he can't live in that fear of his friend killing himself, but it's hard to get out of thinking those thoughts.

In the second verse, once again Raine goes over the man's fight for finding a reason to live. But the man was hoping to find a little more.

I believe 'climbing down the hours' means everyone was simply waiting for the man to snap and take his own life. The brother wonders 'if the hands of time only rule this chapter'- will he see his friend in the afterlife? Can they spend eternity together? 'I'll have to try once again' The brother has tried to stop the guy from tkaing his life, but he is tired and can't keep up anymore. So he rests, and tries to regroup.

The 'I can't live here' refrain represents both men's thoughts- the guy who wants to kill himself can't live in this world anymore, and after he kills himself, his brother can't live the same life. It's too mundane, too ordinary. So the other man goes on a quest as well.

'There he's on his knees again'- I think this verse, like I said before, is the brother screaming at God, demanding to know why He would let someone kill themselves. But 'Convinced that he might break'- like his brother, this man feels pressure and is at his breaking point. Unlike his brother, he doesn't commit suicide- he picks up the phone and talks to someone.

So, in the end, like I said, I think the song is about choice- two men make two very different decisions.

Nickelback – Pusher Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the song is from the POV of a drug dealer, and the first verse is the drug dealer who, for some reason, doesn't want his client to keep using. So he says 'Don't come back anymore.' The client begs him, saying 'I don't need, I don't ask much anymore.'

The second verse seems to deal with things fucking up- he throws a stone into the water, but the ripple it creates messes up all the other ripples. Perhaps the stone is the drugs and the ripples the effects? Justice doesn't live there anymore, because the client, who was one a good guy, is now in the gutter because of drugs. Then, once again, the user begs him for more drugs.

Then, in the third verse, the user ODs, and the dealer sort of shrugs, and goes 'I gave him the shit- what he does with it it his deal.' And when the user ODs, he sees it through the dealer's eyes(I made him just to see in this way)- he sees the real, life-ruining effects of drugs.

And in the second verse, it should be 'candle' instead of 'cradle'

Placebo – Meds Lyrics 18 years ago
'I was alone, falling free
Trying my best not to forget
What happened to us, what happened to me
What happened as I let it slip.'

I think this is the psych patient going off their drugs. This person doesn't want their sanity to slip, so they keep the thoughts of their friends and family and how much hurt they've caused close to them, to try to help keep them sane.

'I was confused by the powers that be
Forgetting names and faces
Passers by were looking at me
As if they could erase it.'

I think 'powers that be' refers to the drugs this person was on, and 'forgetting' was a side effect of the drugs. The people passing by seem to notice this person's angst, and they feel pity for them.

'Baby, did you forget to take your meds?'

This is the person's friend or lover or family member, noticing the odd behaviour, and starting to wonder.

'I was alone staring over the ledge
Trying my best not to forget
All manner of joy, all manner of glee
And our one heroic pledge.'

The person is slipping back into their old behaviours- doing risky things, even though they don't really want to. So this person tries to remember making the promise to stay sane and become 'normal' once again.

'How it mattered to us, how it mattered to me
And the consequences
I was confused by the birds and the bees
Forgetting if I meant it.'

The person starts off thinking these moments and promises are so important to them, but then is distracted by 'the birds and the bees', which I think means they're hallucinating again. When this starts to set in, the person 'realizes' that they never meant to stay sane, that meds are the enemy and they need to return to their dillusions.

'Baby, did you forget to take your meds?'

This time, the words take on a more urgent tone as the people around the patient see the odd dangerous behaviours.

'And the sex, and the drugs, and the complications.'

The person slips into doing all of these things because of their mental illness.

'Baby, did you forget to take your meds?'

Finally, the friends and family take action, and try to do something about it.

'I was alone, falling free
Trying my best not to forget.'

The person gets back on their meds, and once again waits to go through the cycle again.

Matthew Good Band – Strange Days Lyrics 18 years ago
I also think the song is about suicide.

'good morning
don't cop out
you crawled from the cancer to land on your feet
are you crazy to want this
even for a while?'

I think the first lines refers to the person the song is about- this person hates life, and wishes it would end, but decides to go on living for whatever reason. Matt Good is saying 'Good morning, don't cop out of living, since you've decided to do it.' Then Matt Good questions whether deciding to live was the right choice for the person- are they crazy to want this monotonous, crap life they live, or is it right for them to hold on?

'we're making this shit up
the reasons for being are easy to pay
you can't remember the others
they just kind of went away.'

In these lines, Matt is talking about how easy it is to bullshit this person- 'Yeah, there are so many good things about life. Just hold on buddy, you'll see it one day.' The person knows it's bullshit too, but they listen because they want to believe. The others that just kind of went away I think refers to other people who have committed suicide- this person tries not to think about them and how easy life must be for them now that they're dead, because this person knows that thoughts like those will lure him/her into depressed thoughts. So they try to forget those who are gone.

'so you're driving, it's rush hour
the cars on the freeway are moving like slugs
when you drift off to wake up
do you always hit the brakes?'

This person is just sitting in traffic, or doing some mundane task, when the intrusive thoughts creep into their head again. They 'wake up' to how they really feel- that sense of hopelessness and despair they've been trying to shove down.

'we're done lying for a living
the strange days have come and you're gone
either dead or dying
either dad or trying to go.'

This refers back to the bullshit Matt was talking about earlier- both of them are done trying to pretend a great life is around the corner, and Matt knows this person could be at home, right now, trying to commit suicide.

'it's evening, you're tired
you sleep walk, a robot out on the street
are you crazy to want this, even for a while?'

The person slips back ino their numb state, and Matt again silently questions them- are they crazy to try to live when they're depressed?

'you're driving, it's rush hour
the cars on the freeway are moving backwards
into a wall of fire.'

This person has another breakthough of depression, and it's really strong this time.

'we're done lying for a living
the strange days have come and you're gone
either dead or dying
either dead or trying to go
good morning
don't cop out'.

Once again, Matt knows this person could be killing themselves as they sleep. But in the morning, he realizes that the person hasn't killed themselves, and is once again saying 'Don't cop out of living.'

Matthew Good Band – Anti-Pop Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow. I totally missed the meaning of the song, so it's good to read the interpretations of everyone.

I'd hate to completely miss the point of Anti-Pop, but I actually like it as a love song. My initial interpretation of the song was as such. I thought the 'Give it up/ and they'll love you for it' ect.' lines refered to a girl who was going through a shitty time, and having everyone try to force their opinions on her.

I thought the 'You're not my girl, you're just tired' lines meant, in her confused state, she leans on this guy she knows, and tries to sleep with him to make everything go away. But he knows it's wrong to sleep with her in those circumstances, so he admits 'You're not my girl, you're just in a shitty spot and need a friend.'

Sky – Love Song Lyrics 18 years ago
It's funny, but I was listening to all my old pop albums, and this one stuck out at me, purely for the line 'For now I've got me all to myself/ and it's kind of like a love song.'

Here's my interpretation of the song:

Your brothers
They all think I'm crazy

Her brothers think he's crazy for wanting to date a psycho like their sister.

I think its nothing at all
Today
I'm feeling kinda lazy
So I'll be sleeping it off
Once again

I think the singer is saying he doesn't really ntoice her craziness. And then he and his girlfriend got into an argument, and he's feeling kind of lazy, so instead of trying to fix it, like he usually does, he just decides to wait until things calm down.

Its kinda like a love song
Crazy old fashioned love song

Then she decides that the dogs
They belong inside
Its a neverending ride you're taking
I can decide for you, hey
Its kinda like a love song

The singer is talking to himself, and saying 'Hey, she's taking you on a ride. Do you really need her? I know that there's part of you that wants to keep her, but let me make the smart decision.'

I like the 'It's kind of like a love song', because initially, I think it refers to him and his girlfriend and their relationship. However, it evolves in the next chorus.

The party's
Happening somewhere else, baby
Here there is nothing at all

He's talking about how he's let the girl go, so she's 'partying somewhere else' and right now he's aone in the silence.

Someday
I'll be somebody's love slave
For now I've got to be all to myself
And its kinda like a love song
Crazy old fashioned love song

I REALLY love this line. What I think the insger is saying is 'One day, I'll be in a relationship again. But for now, I can just spend time with myself.' And here the 'kind of like a love song' line changes- this time, he's just talking about himself. Now that he has some time alone, he can learn new things about himself and heal from his crazy girlfriend.

We think he's alive but the flies
Make me wonder why
Its a neverending pile I'm raking
Chester's beside you and he's
Singing you a love song

I think this verse is his 'smart side' talking again, about how he's been so burnt out from the relationship, and he still wants to get back with this chick, and he's lazy and sleeping all day and crying and can't get over it, and he's still singing her love songs.

And while you're finding your way home
Me, I'll be watching me a TV show (TV show)
And if the darkness is all you see
Well then you don't know what you're missing (don't know what you're missing)
Do you?
Well it's kinda like a love song, yeah

This is the part of the guy that's depressed over the break up. He's watching TV, thinking about what she's doing right now. Then he thinks about all of her shitty behaviour, and her negative attitude, and thinks 'Well, if she can only see everything bad in life, why do I need her?' Except, he still wants her back. So the 'it's kind of like a love song' is ironic.

The Libertines – Campaign Of Hate Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree that it's about school.

'There's a campaign of hate
It's waiting at the school gates'

I think this line refers to how, as soon as you get to school, you're part of a clique, and you're constantly at war with the other cliques around you.

'For what I am not aware
Must be what you wrote
What you write, you swore that you'd swear.'

This means that the kid going to school doesn't exactly know why his clique is warring with another clique, or how the cliques got started in the first place. But kids just accept that it's because they made friends with one set of peoepl that they're against others.

'For remember why you came
Not to play follow the leader, no no.'

This is Pete Doherty saying get an identity of your own.

'Poor kids dressing like they're rich (mods)
Rich kids dressing like they're poor (oh my god)
White kids talking like they're black
I tried it with Charlene
And I spent three days on my back.'

Once again, refering to cliques and how kids act differently form what they really are to fit in. I think the 'I tried it with Charlene' bit is about how kids succum to peer pressure, and 'try' different things like sex, drugs, ect.

'Oh she said baby...
I like the cut of your J.I.B.
Don't believe them when they say
That you don't get nothing for free
It's all for free follow me now.'

I think this line is saying that the singer won the heart of a girl because he was himself, and because he's different, the girl 'likes the cut of his J.I.B (in case you don't know, to like the cut of someone's jib refers to how, in pirate days, you could tell if someone was friend or foe because of the flag they were flying.)' So the singer is saying that because he was himself, and he didn't have to give away part of his identity, good things happened to him.

I interpretted this as a messed up love song. Pete's singing about how he and his girl/boyfriend just sit around and get loaded all day, and Pete's wondering if this lover really cares about him ('Oh tell me you can see me, can't you see through it all?') or if they're just dragging him through the drugs and shit that they've done for the thrill of it.

The Libertines – Tell The King Lyrics 18 years ago
Correction, the line should be 'Jack drinks and smokes his cares away.'

I think this song is about a shitty friend, anmed at the end as Jack. This friend gossips behind your back, and acts superior. However, the singer can't help but still love Jack, and pleads with him. However, Jack is up in his castle, and won't hear the singer's cries.

However, then Jack's superiority complex begins to screw him over, and the castle begins to crumble, and the friend falls. Then, at the end of the song, it turns out Jack is just on the beach, ignoring the world, after having fallen from his castle built on sand.

I love this song. Another underrated Libertine favourite.

I didn't like this song when I first got The Libertines, but it's grown on me. I love the line 'Don't be coy with me, I'm too clever to follow you...' So, it's song about taking oppourtunities and not letting them pass you by.

I think this is one of the most underrated Libertines songs ever.

I haven't got a clear view of what the song is about, but I see it as someone who's made a lot of mistakes and screwed a lot of people over. He wants to leave everyone behind, but his friends are begging him to make the right decision and own up to what he has done. Or maybe it's just a bunch of lyrics thrown together. Any which way, I love this song :D

For non-Libertines fans, they have a song called 'Boys in the Band' that talks about groupies and poser bands. Excellent song.

Bloc Party – Luno Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree it has something to do with drugs. I personally have little knowledge of drugs, but doesn't your nose bleed if you do enough cocaine?

'And you're tired of your Mum
And you're tired of your Dad
Got you jumping through hoops
Got you shaving your legs
Let it pass, let it pass, let it pass over you.'

I think the first two verses are talking about a girl who feels pressured to be perfect in life- perfect grades, perfect looks, and she has to jump through hoops to earn their affection.

'And your nose is bleeding
You've been lying to me.'

I think the singer is a friend who confrtoned her about doing drugs, but she lied and said no. Then, when her nose starts bleeding, he knows the truth.

'There will be no hesitation
There will be no confrontation
There will be no indication
There will be no cause
There will be no exultation
There will be no justification
There will be no way at all.'

I think this is the singer saying that he's got to let her be- he won't confront her, or interrogate her. He just has to let her do whatever self destructive BS she wants.

Gwen Stefani – Long Way to Go Lyrics 18 years ago
I like this song. It's really the only song on the album that deals with real, hard hitting issues, and it's a nice change of pace.

At least, that's what I thought, until I heard 'It's Beyond Martin Luther, upgrade computer.' I thought I had misheard, because, honestly, WTF?! But no.

Perhaps I'm being too picky, but putting in Martin Luther's name in a song looks like a sad, pathetic attempt to give it some credibility as a serious commentary on today's racial issues. It's like throwing names around at a party in hopes that someone will think you're cool: no. And besides that, WTF? The line doesn't even make sense. Normally, I'd be one of those idiots trying to assign meaning where there was none, but d@mn, the album just has a way of putting random words in for lyrics.

I don't mind some of the album, but this song is one of the ones that drives me nuts.

Our Lady Peace – Denied Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is about a breakup. The guy turns off the phone lines so his ex can't call him, and simply sits around, bemoaning his fate. He thinks, and angrily destorys the TV. With that and the phone, he's eliminated a lot of the possible contact with the outside world . He thinks about how the times they spent together were a lie, and it was all fake. He and she both did wrong things in the relationship, and it was bound to fail.

However, I also like this version, which is a bit more fantastic- I think of it as a guy, who has kidnapped someone. He cuts off the phone line and TV so that no one will think they're where they are.He feels so much tension, and just keeps thinking about what he did. But the lyrics don't match that version so well :D

Our Lady Peace – Let You Down Lyrics 18 years ago
'hey what do you see
its not me not me
why won't you share
it's not fair.'

I think it's about a friend, and his best friend has stumbled across a huge, once in a life time chance. So his best friend completely ignores him, involving himself wholly in whatever he's doing. The friend is asking why his best friend won't share his life wiht him anymore.

'there's a bicycle show
where the bicycle's float
and I wouldn't of cared.'

I think that line is saying the friend is so loyal, that
something stupidly shallow (like gossip) wouldn't have torn them apart.

'I won't be the one who bothers you
I won't be the one who lets you down.'

The friend is saying he'll gracefully step out of his best friend's life- he won't bother his best friend, and because he's not there, he also can't let him down.

'now that you're there
you're not scared
why would you care
it's your dream
not theirs.'

The friend hears that his best friend has his dreams chased down, and now that they've come to fruitation, his best friend is super confidant. So the friend is mentally asking himself why he had any doubts that his best friend was fine without him- why would his best friend have cared, or had problems?

'there's a cigarette thief
stealing cigarette disease
I wish I was there.'

Something happens to his best friend, and the friend wishes he were there, to offer support.

Our Lady Peace – Hope Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with Silvas, and here's my expasion on taking Hope literally.

If you take Hope as a person, literally, I see her initially as a young girl. She's filled with hope and innocence, not knowing climbing on top of the piano could hurt her. A man (her father, brother?) tries to ask her down. But in the second verse, he climbs up top with her, and sees thw world from her point of view. However, Hope is gorwing up, and she's slipping- she's not as hopeful and optimistic as before. The man mourns the loss of her innocence, but has to let her fall. Then, the last two lines: if even Hope cannot have hope anymore, everyone should simply accept thier darkened fates.

Our Lady Peace – Under Zenith Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about a relationship.

'maybe they'll come back again maybe they're all gone
one day you'll find me sending their message strong.'

I think this refers to a 'break up'- you know, the kind where Brad and Britney break up, get back together, break up, get back together, ad nauseum.

'under your feet the city falls down so far the ground is sky
we're under zenith again,
it's healthy if not for long.'

The guy feels absolutely shitty about how they're always breaking up, because his girlfriend is the one always doing it. Once again, the couple is 'under zenith' (the highest point), and perhaps it healthy to get away from each other for a while, but once again they're get back together and continue to unstable relationship.

'much more than seven days and you've slipped to deep
much stronger than sympathy, let your best friend pull back that
leash.'

The guy starts getting very depressed after a week, perhaps because it's unusual to break that long or that's the way he is. But his best friend tries to help him to break up with his girlfriend for good. His best friend yanks on the leash his girlfriend has him on, trying to snap the guy into action.

'sitting by a frozen man, someone somewhere has to cry
were under zenith again let the cycle run we won't die.'

The guy is 'frozen' because he doesn't seem to realize the damage the relationship is doing to him. So someone, a friend perhaps, has to cry out the reality of the situation. But he's convinced she'll take him back, that their relationship won't 'die'.

'I love how you let me fall
under but not to far
I love how you let me fall
only now I see where we are
hold me.'

I think this refers to the guy's psyche- he secretly thrives on being treated like crap from some reason.

Our Lady Peace – Happiness & The Fish Lyrics 18 years ago
I confess
Everyone is overweight
And I'm obsessed
Talking is just masturbating
Without the mess
......
& unimpressed
I can't remember all the names
Everyone you meet today
Is just so fucking vain.'

I think that talks about the instant gratification culture we live in- people are overweight, because they don't exercise and eat poorly. And, like others have said, people talk and talk about who they know, and it winds up just being a bragging contest.

'Addiction leaves you sad today'

I know this is dumb, but that just sounded so much like the line out of a fortune cookie to me :D

'Bored again by happiness
All those friends I've lost in there
I've lost in there.'

I think this refers to complacency of people. Once they get settled in their lives, and do what they do, they begin to forget their friends. friendships become 'boring' because people forget about the times their buddies have helped them out of a jam, a point which I think is re-enforced by the last lines.

'Imagination can't resist
The laziness
That pins you down, get on your knees
Everyone you meet today
Is feeling useless & ashamed'

Underneath the bragging, a lot of people have low self esteem and hate thier lives. To get to the top, people have done things they're ashamed of. They in turn are used by others trying to get to the top.

Our Lady Peace – Middle Of Yesterday Lyrics 18 years ago
I basically thought SM was an album about addiction, so here goes this one:

An addict keeps making these promises to someone he loves. But he keeps blacking out when he's drinking or using, so he can never remember what he's supposed to be making up for. (Aparently I'm to blame, but aparently I've been framed, by a memory that won't help me)

On a side note, I almost cried when I read in the lyrics booklet 'I'll never let this happen again' was scratched out, because that's exactly what it is: the addict promises to change, but it's the same crap over and over, and everyone knows it.

Our Lady Peace – Everyone's A Junkie Lyrics 18 years ago
You know, as sad as this may sound, I've never really listed to SM as a social commentary on technology- I was heard it as a album about addiction. I'll have to relisten.

However, about the big green monkey. If I follow my addiction view, I think it's a hallucination that addicts have. It's completely random, it's place in a rather random place in the song. It's just sort of this vision that would pop up in someone's head, with no rhyme or reason.

If we follow the view through a technological commentary, I'd believe the big green monkey to be the TV addicted culture itself. It's this bright green monkey, sitting in every television room in every first world nation, and no one really talks about it. No one seriously goes 'Hey! There's a huge butt monkey in you living room and we're all TV addicts!'

That's rather off the top of my head though. :: shrugs and scratches::

Our Lady Peace – Bring Back The Sun Lyrics 18 years ago
I think that this is a song from a guy who had an affair on his wife. 'Grass wasn't greener I found'? Things were going bad, so he went out and had an affair. 'I wanted you to know, I'm hanging up my ego.' He realizes how wrong it was, and that he loves his wife. So he keeps making her these promises that he'll work more on the marriage this time round. 'I wanna be your shadow'- he'll let her know where he is all the time if she needs. Infact, he'll never go anywhere without her again if that's what it'll take to get her to take him back.

'And I know
I know I failed you
And I hope
I hope we get through.'

I think the first line, the way it's sung, is just heartbreaking. Also, isn't the next line 'Sunny days again'? I thought it was, just because of the entire sun euphenism.

Our Lady Peace – Naveed Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is about a young man who hates his life, and finally gets to go out and live on his own. He tries to discover why life is worth living, but finds nothing. He still has the same issues that have plagued him.

'The pressure is deceiving,
and for you particularly
Should we let a young man die?
Let him die if he wants to?
Die if he wants to.'

I think the three lines above are thoughts of 'God' (represented by Naveed).

'Climbing down the hours
I need to know now
Do the hands of time only rule this chapter
I'll have to try once again,
I'll have to try when I want to
Try when I want to.'

This is the guy commiting suicide.

'Prayer's on his knees again, trying hard to understand
Why Naveed would let a young man die
Convinced that he might break,
he reaches for the phone
And then another day has gone
Oh another day is gone.'

'Prayer' refers to a friend- this friend is asking God (Naveed) why He (She/It/Whatever) would allow someone to take their own life. Prayer doesn't understand, and feels alone, so he picks up a phone, and it allows him to go through another day with his grief, to remain alive while his friend died.

Melissa Etheridge – You Can Sleep While I Drive Lyrics 19 years ago
Melissa is talking about how she broke up with her girlfriend or how their relationship is on the rocks, and the desire to patch things up. She's so desperate to spend more time with her, that she begs her girlfriend to go on a road trip for her- to get away from where they are, to see things in a new perspective. Melissa will drive, and pay for gas and worry about everything, just for the joy of being in her presence again. Yet, Melissa's angry- why can't she feel the same way, need her in the same way? And yet, if she told Melissa that she didn't want to see her anymore, Melissa would leave. She just needs a definite answer, no matter how much it hurts.

America – A Horse With No Name Lyrics 19 years ago
I saw this song as a tune about someone who tries to escape their life, but through his journies realizes everywhere he goes, his problems follow him, everywhere is the same.

-On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things-

Our hero starts out on a journey, and notices how much life there is. It's odd, to find such life in the desert.

-I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain-

The rain is where he started from- the rain is all his problems, so he goes to the desert, where you wouldn't expect all this rain (problems) to follow. I interpret this as his time of solitude, of finding himself. He sort of shuts off from life and looks introspectively, because out in the desert, there's only him and the horse with no name. The horse could be many things, I haven't decided what it means to me. However, one thought is it's his own desire to flee- the 'horse' is carrying him off to the desert.

-After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red -

As he's looking inwardly, he's finding a lot of crap he doesn't want to deal with. The solitude is getting to him. He can't live alone with his thoughts.

-After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead-

I think this refers to some sort of a relationship- when he left, he broke this relationship, and now it's dead. It could also be some character trait of himself (good sense of humour, positive outlook, ect) that was taken away when he was in the rain.

-After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea-

Finally, he can't take the solitude, so he goes back into the world again. But he doesn't go back to whereever he came from, he moves to somewhere else.

-There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above-

So, he settles down into this new life, expecting it to be perfect. But he finds it isn't. Like where he came from, the water (problems) are still there. Also, there are the parts of the desert- he's still being introspective.

-Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love-

People are shallow and messed up, no matter where he goes.

However, I really like Tack's understanding of the song- very well put.

Our Lady Peace – If You Believe Lyrics 19 years ago
I sort of agree with shameless. I think there's a girl who is fed up with her life, her friends, her way of looking at things. And someone comes along, and shows her a new way to live. However,

'You wanted to fly, you can't close your eyes.'

She's unwilling to let go of what is comfortable to her, and she thus can't accept this new way of life being offered to her. So she'll always stay where she is, because she 'can't close her eyes'
