I just listened to this song 4x in a row and here's what I got: Love is not a guarantee. This guy, and maybe her too, have problems with commitment. Afraid to settle, they're always looking for the next best thing, but that can be a lonely life. Go along for the ride, and don't worry about what you're missing, because it usually turns out to be shallow and unfulfilling anyway. It seems like she leaves at one point, but they reunite, which leads me to believe they find something worth fighting for. Who knows how long it will last...that's not the point. They are in love in the here and now and that's what matters. |

Love this song. It's so honest and raw and we've all been here before. A relationship ends and you wonder how you even stayed together so long. Like someone mentioned before we tend to project on to others who we want them to be, or who we imagine them to be in our mind. We're disappointed and resentful when they don't live up to our expectations.
There's a quote that goes: "The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them."
Well no one is perfect so it seems we consistently do this throughout our lives. We criticize and then want them back and this is what makes relationships hurtful. I love the lines:

Monsters, devil on your back - they both point to addiction. About liking someone, wanting to be with someone who suffers from it. They being patient, being there for them, helping them through it. They're telling them they believe in them, being positive etc. Anyone who has ever tried to be with someone with problems like this knows how difficult and frustrating it is to see someone make the same mistake over and over. This song is saying I know what your problems are, I know how you feel and I'm here for you no matter what. Sweet ain't it? :) |

This is what wikipedia says: (it's pretty interesting & def makes sense)
The song talks about three particular instances in which the narrator realizes "there ain't no rest for the wicked". First, he encounters a prostitute. The narrator proceeds to ask her why she does what she does. The chorus (her response) analyzes the main reasons why individuals follow the paths they follow ("...Money don't grow on trees, I've got bills to pay, I've got mouths to feed..."). The narrator then encounters a second individual who robs him, whom he asks the same question. Finally, upon turning on the television, the narrator sees a preacher being arrested for pocketing the funds of his church. This is followed by a third chorus with the same answers.
The song was inspired by a co-worker of lead singer Matt Schultz, who at the time was a drug dealer. When Schultz asked him why he did what he did, his response was there "ain't no rest for the wicked".

well first of all, the first couple lines of this song completely suck me in.
i think i mostly agree with cars and calories up there. i feel as though he's struggling to find a compromise between living widly without any ties and settling down enough to have a relationship with someone. in the end though, it doesn't look as though the relatioship won out and he's saying he's going to keep living without a care until "his legs are broken" or until it's literally not possible anymore.
