The Rakes – Strasbourg Lyrics

the 'Helden' line is from a German version of Heroes David Bowie re-recorded in the 80's. Heroes is about two lovers meeting by the Berlin wall. |

At reading, when they played this, they had pictures of Bush on a giant screen flashing between flames and other images, it is about Bush, and most likely Blair as well. Great song. |

Apparently this Athlete slightly spoofing Nelly's "hot in here" which was being played everywhere when they wrote it. |

David Bowie – The Bewlay Brothers Lyrics
|
This is such a sad song, it's about his step brother who was taken away to a mental institution. I love the sense of rebellion in this song, it makes me think of childhood, but more what Bowie's childhood would have been. The line -
I was stone and he was wax
So he could scream, and still relax, unbelievable
is just brilliant. Bowie always sounds like an outsider, on this song it sounds like his brother was an outsider with him. |

Electric Light Orchestra – Rockaria! Lyrics

Agreed on the last verse, the pace really picks up there and brings the song to a great end, and yes on my version the opera singer does say oops, I think its done to take the glory out of opera, show that it really is a rock song. |

The Divine Comedy – Songs Of Love Lyrics
|
As well as the theme to a great TV programme this is lyrically brilliant and original. How clever that although he is saying how beautiful love songs can be he is comparing it to the raw animal nature of the people who will go and buy these records, he paints himself to be an outsider poet and does it so well. |

Blur – Sweet Song Lyrics

It is about a relationship but it also seems more universal than that especially when he says "people get so lonely" I think everyone can identify with that. This is in many ways the highlight of Think Tank. |

Paul Weller – Wild Wood Lyrics

Is it possibly simple enough to say that everyone has got themselves caught up in things that don't really matter. No one knows where they are going and they can't get out. |

Beck – Ozzy Lyrics

Its obviously about Ozzy Osbourne, Beck wants to be like him but possibly more for his image than his music. Is there such a thing as a non live version of this? |

David Bowie – Modern Love Lyrics
|
I think that alot of this is to do with the changing of times when this song was written. This was the beginning of the 80's and Bowie was more aware of fashion as a theme than before. He had cleaned up from his really bad drugs phase in Berlin and was stopping the experimenting and starting writing pop songs. Modern love possibly about the Yuppie people getting married but its all being done for fashion
"There's no sign of life, It's just the power to charm". |

The Magic Numbers – Forever Lost Lyrics
|
They have a beach boys style harmony to them, they sound fresh out of the 60's "dont let the sun be the one, to change you baby.". Thats no bad thing they're great. I'm not totally sure what they mean by forever lost, maybe it's just them saying that they feel really detached or that they are lost in a relationship. |

Prince – Raspberry Beret Lyrics

I love the lyrics, "She walked in through the out door, out door" and would like to point out, although its commonly known, that the lightning seeds got their name from this song and with good reason, what a piece of poetry. |

Belle & Sebastian – If She Wants Me Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
This song is one of Belle and Sebastian's greatest, it's a shame many people have dismissed Dear Catastrophe Waitress because it's different. It is brilliant that this person really wants to be a better person like when they climb the hill. But it shows that is not what people want only what they think they want, when they get to the top its different, your friends and family mean alot more. |

The Polyphonic Spree – Section 17 (Suitcase Calling) Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
This is possibly my favourite song ever, on one level it seems to be about this persons personal relationship with someone who he loves. "Entirely for you" is such a beautiful sentiment and "soon you will see there is much more to me" shows that he is really committed to this person. It also shows how the spree really are the happiest band ever and leads me to think that maybe this is a religious song. That makes sense then with the sparkling in the sky and the appreciation of nature, its a prayed a whole hearted devotion to god. As an Atheist I still find it beautiful and touching and a song even a band with as much originality as the Polyphonic spree will find it difficult to ever beat this. |
