Marnie Stern – Patterns of a Diamond Ceiling Lyrics
| 10 years ago

thanks to @zhimbo, found the origin of 3 references coming from Glenn Gould - Solitude Trilogy, the idea of the north, and the latecomers
http://www.hermitary.com/solitude/gould.html
I'm so interested in the rest of the references in this song. If anyone can shed some light on other references, please post. |

this was one of my least favorite when I first heard it, but now I think I like it the most, in terms of lyrics. |

what do you mean by: "the lyrics and song titles don't exactly detract
"equally damaged", "for the damaged", etc"
could you explain please? |

Superchunk – Detroit Has a Skyline Lyrics

But you'd expect a grimy place to have a skyline because it's a big city. The analogy works better I think if he thought Detroit was a small unknown city before finding out that it has a skyline. |

Pinback – Tripoli Lyrics

This song is not about a soldier or depression. It's about going down to Tripoli, Lebanon (not Lybia) to meet up with a girl that he met on the internet, but he ends up not being able to meet up with her because of not having enough time or because he was a little nervous about it, or a little of both. |

The Gloria Record – The Arctic Cat Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
I mean I interpreted it as the arctic cat returning to judge us.
I think Gloria is also a reference to God/JC, or the glory of God, like when he says in that song "I just want be something more than the mud in your eyes. I want to be the clay in your hands." |

Mineral – Gjs Lyrics
|
I never viewed the title as initials. I always thought the title was a cryptic way of pronouncing Jesus (Gjs). Today is actually easter sunday and Christians say "He is risen", "He is risen indeed". I wonder if the song was intended to have double meaning. |

The Gloria Record – The Arctic Cat Lyrics

is this about jesus when he says:
"that cat will be back again someday
(to have his way with all of us)"
but why does he refer to JC as the arctic cat?
i'm certainly interested in this kind of stuff |

John Vanderslice – Promising Actress Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
yes, every line is a reference to "mulholland drive," and diehard fans of the movie will appreciate the lyrics much more, but perhaps JV is also using it to describe an event in his life...?
"and sometimes a cowboy is just a man in a cowboy suit" is possibly the best line ever written. |
