Sharon Van Etten – Serpents Lyrics | 11 years ago |
These are the lyrics straight from the album booklet: It was a close call Sitting in the back of the room with a bowl you had owned, But they didn't know. Close in on my black eye. I feel safe at times. Certain emblems Tell me it's time Serpents in my mind Looking for your crimes Everything changes I don't want to mine to this time You enjoy sucking on dreams so I will fall asleep with someone other than you I had a thought you would take me seriously And listen on Serpents in my mind I am searching for your crimes Everything changes In time You'll stay frozen in time Collaging girls, Controlling minds. You hold the mirror well To everybody else Serpents in my mind Trying to forgive your crimes Everyone changes in time. I hope he changes this time. |
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Red Right Hand Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Apparently he really did ad-lib some of this. From an interview in Rolling Stone circa 1994: Q: I find it hard to believe that you ad-libbed in the song "Red Right Hand." Nick Cave: "That's quite true. One of my great talents is ad-libbing, I have to say. I had the title, and basically I knew what I wanted to sing about, and it was a matter of just going in and putting it down. There's certain lines in there, obviously, that aren't off the top of my head, but there's ones in there that definitely are. Aren't I incredible?" Yes, Nick. Yes you are. |
Wolf Parade – In the Direction of the Moon Lyrics | 14 years ago |
These lyrics seem pretty correct, although I hear "I take my meals with weirdos." |
Owen Pallett – The Great Elsewhere Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Lewis loses his faith in Owen. |
The National – 90-Mile Water Wall Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think it's about someone who is in love with someone else, secretly, and then the other person finds out. This song is about the moment when the other person confronts him about it. "Well I know that you know that you've become the target of this hand with never even asking Well I know that you know that you're the only thing that I can stand" He's like, 'I know that you know that I love you, even though you never asked for it.' It's just him being like, 'Oh shit, she knows.' And the hair part, she's standing there rejecting him, and she looks so beautiful, and it doesn't seem fair. He's humiliated and kind of ashamed, and just wants to fall through the floor and away from this situation. He prays for anything to come and sweep him away. I always get the image of him looking at the floor, uncomfortable, and she asks if he's listening. "Yes, I'm listening, I'm listening." "Your looking for that hurt look around my mouth the look of a steep fall" She knows that she's hurting him, but it's something that she has to do. @sushishf, I don't think this is a masturbation reference. I think it just means that he's chosen her. Such a sad, beautiful song. |
The Flaming Lips – One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song always makes me think of the Athena/Sharon model Eight from Battlestar Galactica. A robot transformed by love. Although, I suppose it works for Caprica Six as well! |
Page France – Chariot Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I meant to mention that that part is from "Feather" but the last line is different. As an addition to "Chariot" it was so beautiful. |
Page France – Chariot Lyrics | 16 years ago |
They did this song in their Daytrotter session (it's amazing, everyone should hear it), and he added a really pretty part at the end that went: I am blowing for a trumpet, hallelujah And you stood too close to the sunset and it finally outgrew you. So now I paint you on my door post like I ever knew you. I made all of the right noises but, my love, they shot right through you. |
Thursday – Ladies And Gentlemen: My Brother, The Failure (with Tim Kasher) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Oh, Kasher, why do you do this to yourself? I can't comprehend why a genius like Tim Kasher is providing back-up vocals for this joke of a band, except, perhaps has a favor. Ugh. I really hope that this was a product of binge drinking and a serious black out on his part. Wow, I just listened to this and boy, is it ever awful. Big surprise there. Tim sounds great as usual, though. |
Okkervil River – A Hand To Take Hold Of The Scene Lyrics | 17 years ago |
A few corrections: "She rises up like a YAWN, GRIPS MY HEART like a claw, splits apart like a jaw, like an eye" "We were losing the fight" "When all the fires are fanned, and WE'RE SHUCKING our plans" |
Bat for Lashes – What's A Girl To Do Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's also, "When you've loved so long that the thrill is gone." |
Okkervil River – John Allyn Smith Sails Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Oh, and also: this is some of the best songwriting and storytelling I've ever heard. Song after song, I can't even believe how amazing these lyrics are. This song doesn't have any hidden meaning. The character has lived past his prime and turned into something that he dislikes, so he jumps to his death. Love the reference to a childhood not-really-suicide attempt. And the very meta first verse. So good! Will Sheff astounds me. |
Okkervil River – John Allyn Smith Sails Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Such a great ending to a wonderful album. I love when they break into Sloop John B. So cool. |
Okkervil River – A Hand To Take Hold Of The Scene Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Am I crazy, or does the first verse seem to be referring to that terrible VH1 reality show Breaking Bonaduce? This song is great. I love the "doo doo doo" parts. And the hand-claps. Awesome. |
Charlotte Gainsbourg – Jamais Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Jamais means 'never' in French. |
Architecture in Helsinki – Heart It Races Lyrics | 17 years ago |
To everyone who hates this song (and rightly so), listen to the cover that Dr. Dog does. It's brilliant, somehow. At least something good has come out of the terrible album that AIH has put out. |
Pony Up! – Dance For Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The story is called Fanny Hill. You can read it here: http://wiretap.area.com/ftp.items/Library/Classic/fannyhill.txt |
Sea Wolf – Middle Distance Runner Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Some of these lyrics are incorrect. It should be like this: So won't you run to me tonight? >>Tonight we could pretend that we're just lovers But I'll only ever be a middle distance runner & Well my heart is beating hard And I'm off with a shot at the start And my legs tremble from strain >>But by the finish line I am drained |
Great Lake Swimmers – Your Rocky Spine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It seems to be one big metaphor for exploring your lover's body like new land. So ridiculously beautiful. |
Blonde Redhead – Elephant Woman Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Me too, singwithcheer! And the person that I saw the film with listens to hip-hop mainly so she was like, "What now? Blonde what?" It's always awesome hearing good music in a well-done, interesting movie. |
Arcade Fire – Cold Wind Lyrics | 17 years ago |
no_quarter, I would tend to agree with you if it were written for any tv show other than Six Feet Under. Trust me, that's not depressing at all. SFU was never contrived, the music was a huge part of the mood of so many scenes and they were always perfect, and the show itself was beautiful beyond comprehension. I love that fact that the Arcade Fire was involved in something so wonderful. |
Okkervil River – O, Dana Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a cover. Big Star wrote the original. |
David Thomas Broughton – execution Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Haha. True love, right there. |
TV on the Radio – Say You Do Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"the first line is so trite and simple, but the way tunde delivers it is so haunting." The first lines are supposed to be trite. They're an example of the "dumb shit" this girl made true. |
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – I Love Creedence Lyrics | 17 years ago |
No, it doesn't imply romantic feelings. It actually implies lack of romantic feelings, to me. All that lyric is saying is that it had as much of an emotional impact on her as a divorce would. Saying, "I swear, ___" sounds like trying to convince someone of something that might be a little unbelievable, like a friend leaving you being the equivilant of a husband leaving you. It does matter, because the song is about losing a friend, and I think it kind of cheapens it to imply that it's just another love lost story. Anyway, the only reason I made the first comment on here is because I actually saw Casiotone live and before he played this he explained what the song was about, so I know this for a fact. |
Gogol Bordello – Through the Roof 'n' Underground Lyrics | 17 years ago |
How are there no comments for this song?! It's amazing. |
Mew – Saliva Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I could live in the way those last four lines sound. Jesus. |
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – I Love Creedence Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm still almost certain that Creedence is a woman. I disagree about being a male name, because I knew a girl in middle school named Creedence. |
Regina Spektor – On the Radio Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is really lovely: "this is how it works you peer inside yourself you take the things you like and try to love the things you took and then you take that love you made and stick it into someone else's heart pumping someone else's blood" |
Jason Anderson – If I'm Waiting Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Love. |
Swan Lake – All Fires Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"You have good friends You have a lover When friendships end You will still love her" So, so beautiful. I cannot wait for this album. |
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – I Love Creedence Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Actually, this is from a girl's perspective. Elodie and Creedence are just best friends, probably like sisters. I don't think it's a romantic thing at all; just the pain of losing a best friend to change and growing up. And Creedence never finds someone that fills that void. |
Sunset Rubdown – Shut Up I Am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think that it's "Do you understand what I'm pining for" not "finding for." |
Owen Pallett – Better Than Worse Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is actually a cover of a Bobby Birdman song. Both versions are amazing. |
Cursive – The Censor Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Actually, it sounds like he's saying that he already hasn't been, ie Happy Hollow. The songs on Happy Hollow are stories, and the only thing really personal about him is his dissatisfaction with religion. But he sounds like he kind of regrets it. I mean, these lyrics are pretty self-explanitory. With the "songs are getting smothered" and the "what have I done". I feel bad that these amazing songs that he gives to us are putting him through this. Personally, I'm willing to accept any kind of lyrics from him. They're always amazing, personal or not. |
Cursive – The Bitter End Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oh, and just a minor correction he says, "When you're alone, DID you utter dying words?" |
Cursive – The Bitter End Lyrics | 18 years ago |
These lyrics are amazing, as usual for Tim. So much if it is clever, and so damn heartbreaking. I love this part; "When you didn't answer your phone, suddenly the last time we spoke was the last time we spoke." Very, very clever. Tim owns. |
Cursive – Opening the Hymnal/Babies Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Yup, definitely 'delusions.' I love how he refers to this as the "son of god complex" in the last song. So clever. |
Grizzly Bear – Don't Ask Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm in love with this song. |
Metric – Love Is a Place Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Love is a Place" is a poem by e.e. Cummings. love is a place & through this place of love move (with brightness of peace) all places yes is a world & in this world of yes live (skilfully curled) all worlds |
The Tiny – Closer Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's "lose" not "loose." Anyway, what an amazing song! Pretty self-explanitory. The video for it pretty much acts it out, it's cute. |
Xiu Xiu – Hello from Eau Claire Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I agree, hearing them sing together would be wonderful. |
Murder by Death – Dynamite Mine Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't like the version on the album as much as I like the demo version that they released before. Either way, damn good song. The strings are amazing. |
Man Man – Feathers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
So pretty much the most beautiful song ever? Oh man, this song is good. |
Cake Bake Betty – Samo and Grace Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love this song! It's the song that got me completely addicted to CBB. |
Cake Bake Betty – The Spine Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Such a pretty song. |
Why? – Me On Beer Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's "guiltlessness." |
The Radio Dept. – Your Father Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Yeah, after a long time of listening to this song, my ears just picked up the "jerking off every day to your memory" and I rushed here to confirm/deny. Holy crap, that's hilarious that I never noticed that before. Good song, anyway. |
Jens Lekman – F-Word Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Love this song. |
Jens Lekman – Another Sweet Summer's Night On Hammer Hill Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think that you might be thinking of the song "A Sweet Summer's Night On Hammer Hill." This is a different song. |
