Bright Eyes – Reinvent the Wheel Lyrics | 13 years ago |
i'm not sure it is about either but think it fits in far more with mangum than smith, mainly because it seems to describe someone who has chosen to go away "My friend you were the model A priceless work of art Boys would fashion their emotions To the pattern of your heart" could apply to both, aeroplane had a massive influence on underground indie "And I heard you wrote that record For a girl you loved but died" seems to fit, listen to holland 1945, it may be about anne frank but he loved her "the only girl I ever loved..." "And I know you'll never come back now To the world where people are Because you never understood What they loved you for" Think this seems to describe someone who has turned their back on their art despite the acclaim and become reclusive way more than someone who has committed suicide "Now ghosts, they have their secrets And they'll tell them to a few So you could never pay attention When they're whispering to you" numerous NMH ghost references "There were many talents you possessed That I wished myself to have But the way your eyes would gloss over Well, I never envied that" Don't think that necessarily refers to heroin, just generally troubled "And I doubt you'll ever come back now From wherever it is you are Because you never understood What we loved you for" key word "doubt" it is possible, there is a chance he could come back from self imposed exile, therefore they must be alive "I'm sure the TV sets will tell us When someone reinvents the wheel Until then I'll have a million conversations About shit that isn't real But I've tried to breathe in meaning Dig deep to every gasp of air Because I know you did the same thing For as long as you could bear I guess everything just circles around To where it was before So I hope I see you soon In some other form" lots of circle references, which is a reoccuring theme of ITAOTS, again holland 1945 in particular wheels, rings, people coming back in different form. I don't think smith being from omaha has any relevance, there were plenty of links between omaha and athens scenes, NMH/e6 members even played on letting off the happiness, that doesnt necessarily mean anything, but there is just as much connection as with smith. I wouldnt be surprised if it wasn't about anyone specifically but an amalgamation of various lost musicians. But I think mangum is alot less of a stretch than smith who it only fits with if you ignore alot of it. |

Yellow Bird: I re-read the first story in jesus' son by denis johnson, an author oberst admires, and towards the end the main character a drug addict is in hospital pretending there is nothing wrong as he sees a yellow birds fluttering in front of his face. I'll keep an eye out for more references in the book. It also always kind of reminds me of the last NMH song little birds but probably has nothing to do with it. |

Joanna Newsom – Emily Lyrics | 17 years ago |
she definatly gets them wrong, meteorites are what theyre called once on earth and therefore 'devoid of the fire that propelled it to thee' or a 'bone thrown from the void' i.e. come from space, a meteroid is what travels through space and 'is the cause of the light' when they burn up in the atmospheres causing meteors wich she correctly says is what we percieve, shooting stars. Just seems weird she says she would set it in verse to her sister so she would remember and then get it wrong although it does suggest that she often got it wrong. Dunno it bothers me. |

'between what is wanted and required' makes more sense than 'between what is once and now required' given the following lines |

It is about his cousin Collin who committed suicide, the brother mentioned is Collins brother Ian (from desaparecidos). I think the lifted booklet says 'for collin' and desaparecidos first gig was a benefit for him. |
