Smog – To Be of Use Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I don't care if your personal interpreation doesn't fit with mine. I hear the song as a cave of needing to be needed. For me, with my supposedly 'weak' mind, this is not a place I feel the need to be in. I have other ideas about use. This is a beautiful song and I imagine we agree there. Judging so firmly against a faceless username may make you feel better but it won't make you correct. |
Destroyer – Chinatown Lyrics | 13 years ago |
he makes me believe I should never leave Vancouver |
Destroyer – Leopard of Honor Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"I'll let someone else try and figure out what, if anything, that has to do with the song. " : ) heehee I'm a little terrified of going into that territory too ... but I'll throw this out there: perhaps 'leopard of honour' refers to someone who speaks rather well about film. someone who may not even be aware of the award even existing. I have a lot of personal interpretations of this song, but the one above would be one of the less personal ones. |
of Montreal – Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse Lyrics | 14 years ago |
you've got the prometheus story right. I think your interpretation is a great sum up! |
CocoRosie – Gallows Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it was just before the moon hung her weary, heavy hating the gallows and the graves hold the milky, milky cradle his tears HAVE TURNED TO poppies a shimmer in the midnight a flower in the twilight a flower in the twilight and I was screaming it's in his screaming I was screaming near the willow they took him to the gallows, he fought them all the way though and when they asked us how we knew his name we died just before him her eyes are in the flowers her hands are in the branches her voice is in the breezes and I was screaming it's in his screaming I was screaming near the willow trees we're waiting by the willow her milky, milky cradle her lock it's long and roasted HIS PICTURE WORN AND WEATHERED her hair is in the garden her voice is in the ? her RULES are in the blossoms her eyes are in the branches and I was screaming it's in THIS screaming OUR screaming near the willow trees I was screaming it's in his screaming I was screaming near the willow trees |
Smog – All Your Women Things Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It is possible that the woman he is referring to is joanna newsom (they dated for a number of years way back when). joanna newsom's song "does not suffice" often seems to be the response to smog's "all your women things". they both describe the clothes left around his room. as well, on her songmeanings page, zortmuckerman commented that the lyrics to Does Not Suffice "seem like an interesting counterpoint that has Joanna picking up all her clothes and leaving him to be with himself." I have an image of Joanna's silky things casually strewn all over Bill Callahan's dark room which is really quite comedic. which is why I think it is symbolic more than it is literal. it makes sense that whoever this woman was, her memory would stay in his room. but, if it in fact Joanna Newsom and the Does Not Suffice theory is true, it is nice that she wrote him a response in the form of an equally heartbreaking song. |
Smog – To Be of Use Lyrics | 14 years ago |
yikes this is a very powerful song! but I feel like listening to it too much would turn me into a very dejected and dissatisfied person! |
Joanna Newsom – Does Not Suffice Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"And everywhere I tried to love you Is yours again and only yours" I mean..... holy holy holy. How else can you say it better? |
Micachu – Sweet Heart Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"The thought of kissing anything reminds me that I have become thin." this could be a reference to losing weight after a complicated break up/ a stressful time "I love my friends and I am loved" she later says this which could mean that she is feeling disenchanted with romance but still enjoying her life what a great song! |
Beach House – Better Times Lyrics | 14 years ago |
my favourite off the album! |
Florence + the Machine – Kiss with a Fist Lyrics | 14 years ago |
basically, fighting = a relationship that is dwindling however, people stay together for longer than maybe 'makes sense' out of convenience, comfort, and a fear of loneliness - a kiss with a fist is better than none (at least for awhile) |
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – It's Winter and You Don't Love Me Anymore Lyrics | 14 years ago |
some changes (I listened to it again/ mine is off "answering machine music").... oh, and every once in a while the way that you stop and smile it breaks my heart EVERY time cause i know that you're thinking of anyone but me. and i don't understand why we stopped holding hands. i know THAT it's cold outside, but do you have to wear mittens all the time? you put on your scarf to keep warm and muts to keep your ears from harm, but it all just shuts me out. and i watch your breath puff out. what a sssongwriter! |
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Daina Flores, You're the One Lyrics | 14 years ago |
:( his lyrics are very straight-forward, sincere in their regret but also said with good intention. it seems as if the first verse is written near the end of the school year, and the second verse is written after he tries once again to 'reach' this daina flores, only to find that he's "missed his chance". :) so cute. |
Thao Nguyen – What About Lyrics | 14 years ago |
lobsternooberg is right about the lyrics. what a great song!!! |
Leonard Cohen – Ain't No Cure for Love Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I'm aching for you baby I can't pretend I'm not I need to see you naked In your body and your thought I've got you like a habit And I'll never get enough There ain't no cure, There ain't no cure, There ain't no cure for love this part is about longing for a past lover/ very powerful lyrics! |
Mirah – Where's My Heart Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I love the lyrics "what fruit should I be" is a question I've asked myself, literally and figuratively and the image of a heart left outside a movie theatre is ... grey and magical |
Mirah – Don't Go Lyrics | 14 years ago |
so sincere, so sweet and sincere "In some ways it is and also isn't very far" |
Beat Happening – Cat Walk Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Amy Millan – Skinny Boy Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Thao Nguyen – Know Better Learn Faster Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I can't think of a better single for a break-up album- she sings it perfectly! |
The XX – Basic Space Lyrics | 14 years ago |
much like how I end up interpreting most of their songs, I believe this one is primarily composed of sexual imagery and honest and personal experiences of a primarily physical relationship. sexual aspects: "Neck, chest, waist to floor - Easy to take" "Keep it in, keep us safe" "Can't adjust, Can't relearn - Got to keep what I have" the play on dominance- who is dominant in the relationship? "I can't let it out" vs. "I still let you in" for me, the strongest image is the one of her being so unhappy and suffocated that she claims to have been... "underwater, breathing out and in" I find their songs very beautifully composed and imagine it would be very difficult to sing about such dark bedroom memories without being incredibly poetic. the lyrics are sincere and that is what makes them memorable. |
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I finally understand the song! She goes traveling ("I stray") and comes back to find that the one she loves is under the impression that someone else or other friends love him/her more than 'she' does ("but they don't like you like I love you" the idea of travel also works with the title of the song, Maps and the way she sings it reinstates the conflict that she has with herself in that she keeps going between Maps (or getting away) and "they don't love you like I love you" (or the frustration she feels with how things have ended up between them) |
St. Vincent – Laughing With A Mouth of Blood Lyrics | 15 years ago |
lyrics tell of a time when she isn't so happy with herself or with others (ex. old friends) but she knows it will be better (since the future itself exists to watch her) |
Ladytron – He Took Her to a Movie Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I agree with androoh and fauxglamour in that the song might not necessarily be from a female perspective. but, even if it is, I interpreted it a woman talking about her friend and her friend's relationship with her boyfriend. in other words, no matter what her friend is going through, he takes her to a movie. but, it's okay. she does the same for her and this calms her friend down and keeps her happy. her boyfriend and the woman share one thing in common: they can keep her happy with a repeating action. I also think all the other interpretations are totally valid too. but I guess I try to relate lyrics to my own life. |
Koop – Come to Me Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Feist – Let It Die Lyrics | 16 years ago |
it's like that feeling of "oh fuck, we shouldn't be together. we can't, we can't, we have to forget that kiss and everything we love about each other" the lyrics are so, so beautiful and telling. |
CocoRosie – Armageddon Lyrics | 16 years ago |
gorgeous! "when the money's all spent, when the money's all gone" sung so beautifully! the lyrics are great great great. |
Daniel Johnston – Walking The Cow Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this is the most beautiful low-fi song i have ever heard. i think the mickeydees-slip-tapes-to-cute-girls thing is really adorable too. as for the song i think the reference to walking the cow is quite literal and is a metaphor for simply walking aimlessly, going day to day, doing something which looks productive but really isn't. it's a sad song about not achieving very much while having good intentions- "hi how are you- he never meant no one no harm please let him stay!" |
Sunset Rubdown – Winged/Wicked Things Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i hear: So I say, oh I've seen her, it's just smoke So I say oh I see now it's just smoke Oh I say oh I've seen her, it's just smoke Oh I say oh I see now it's just smoke |
CocoRosie – Werewolf Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this is a beautiful song and i do think it's about the relationship between father/daughter- how they fade away. i agree with td mello's interpretion. |
CocoRosie – By Your Side Lyrics | 16 years ago |
contrary to what some people said, i strongly believe this song is not about the "dull" lifestyle of house wives or about submission or consequences (black eyes, apple pies) of marriage. the way she sings it and the way the song is composed really says, genuinely, that she loves him so much that she would do all of these things for him. this: "cause it's nearly midnight & all i want with my life is to die your housewife" the way it is sung, the stress put on the repition of to "die" really shows that this is a song about true mad love. for instance, there are birds chirping at points in the song- it plays out the beautiful & plesant aspects of being a housewife. at first i didn't understand this song and felt it went against my values but then i saw it for what it really is. |
CocoRosie – Beautiful Boyz Lyrics | 16 years ago |
HAHA voldermort! i love the genet interpreation and i definately see the homosexual themes the song establishes. it's very beautiful to listen to |

Forest City Lovers – Closet Genius Lyrics | 16 years ago |
beautiful, beautiful |
Beirut – After the Curtain Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i really like the cold war interpretation of the song. for me it's always been his way of finishing the album and his way of expressing the build-up of his life with the curtain falling. the feeling one gets before the curtain falls, time goes on, you are forgotten. |
Kevin Drew – Tbtf Lyrics | 16 years ago |
hehe song about falling in love with your best friend? in contrast to ibi dreams of pavement which was about stabbing your best friend in the back. bss are amazing! cats and crafts put you in a tiny box that's filled with ALLl victims who can't explain how they love their moms and all MY hands that retreat they try to slip right down their pussy but theres nothing that you thought is LONG but you are too beautiful to fuck you're too beautiful you are too beautiful to fuck you're too beautiful slice my eyes took me through another night that goes all night through tries to sieaze what their hearts have lost my best friend took me in and laid me down beside my own sin and I said "can you please forgive the love?" but you are too beautiful to fuck you're too beautiful you are too beautiful to fuck you're too beautiful |
Beirut – Scenic World Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this is a beautiful song |
Joy Division – Disorder Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i always thought it was about being homosexual and not being able to talk about it and it being percieved as a "disorder". but i always thought the first line was "i've been waiting for a GUY to take me by the hand..." |
Joy Division – Disorder Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Mother Mother – Love and Truth Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i love mothe rmother! i added some more to it, basically the back up:: Is my life not all that I thought it would be? Is it simply ordinary? Oh, is it far from all my fantasies? I lie awake (lie awake) I lie awake at night and brood (for you) About the things I never do (oh no) And how I'm missing out on love and truth Love and truth Why are they so hard to achieve? (to achieve) Love and truth They're such hot commodities But come in such small quantities Oh, love and truth where are you? Oh, where are you? Oh! I dance (a-shoob a-shoob) I go out on the town and dance (a-shoob a-shoob) I go and try to find romance (a-smooch a-smooch) But all I come home is with empty hands Oh, boo, hoo, hoo Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no Oh, cha-chagrin But all I really want is love and truth Oh, love and truth Why is it that I cannot find these (sweet delights) Oh, love and truth Well, if everything was up to me I'd make sure that there was plenty of love and truth Love and truth where are you? Oh, love and truth where are you? Oh oh oh oh oh |
