For awhile I thought this might be symbolism about the civil war and the relationship between Lincoln and his secretary... but then it occurred to me that catherinekson had the right idea on April 09, 2003

I've really given this some INTENSE scrutiny and I think this song might be about a guy who really loves his dog.

The Long Winters – Scared Straight Lyrics 8 years ago
Then again.... John Roderick is from Washington State so "the one" might refer to HWY 101 on the coast. There is at least one TMBG song that refer to HWY 101 as "the one"

The Long Winters – Scared Straight Lyrics 8 years ago
I do not pretend to have any special insights into this song... but it bothers me that only a few of us have taken the time to attempt a full interpretation. I'll try:

Let's start with the phrase: "Are you brave or are you scared straight?" This seems to be about lifestyles. It seems to me that the man is somehow on the periphery of societal norms. Probably something like a hippie or a musician definitely not the "straight" lifestyle of an 9-5 job in the city.

This song is written after their most recent fight in which she stormed out and left him. She has called him from somewhere outside Washington D.C. to hash it out over the phone. "Washington's on the one" = Highway 1 which runs right through Washington DC.

So, she calls him to say that she's done. It's over. "You called to say you're gonna run"

His response is to ask her if she's sure. "Can you wait?" "Can you stand it" He's basically saying are you being brave and taking your destiny in your own hands? Or are you so tortured by this alternate lifestyle that you are scared into being a normal square?

The line "Maybe smoke belongs in the sky" seems to reference his alternative lifestyle involving weed. That might be me making things up... but it makes sense to me.

The whole point of the song is him trying to convince her that she has something good with him but in doing he seems to convince himself that "something has to change".

What do you think? Am I far off?

(Yes, I understand that I'm about 13 years late to this conversation.)

Imaginary Cities – Ride This Out Lyrics 10 years ago
I'm not certain that there isn't some deeper, more insightful reading of this song... but it seems like it's about someone losing faith in their relationship. It's painful, but they've decided to stick it out and see where it goes.

They Might Be Giants – Your Own Worst Enemy Lyrics 11 years ago
Has anyone thought about the line:
"And the song they play
Is that guy with the messed up face
Going, precious and few are the moments that you
And your own worst enemy share."

The Band Climax did a song called "Precious and Few" which was released in 1972. The lyrics are "Precious and few are the moments we two can share" which seems to fit.

I do not know about the messed up face part, but the lead singer of Climax, Sonny Geraci, did end up getting a cerebral arteriovenous malformation.

They Might Be Giants – Out of Jail Lyrics 11 years ago
So, let's start with line 1:
"Long before the screen door slammed, she was out of Xenia"
I always wondered what "Xenia was". As it turns out, this is a reference to Homer's Odyssey. Xenia is a Greek concept encompassing the generosity and courtesy shown to those who are far from home. In other words, Hospitality.

My Chemical Romance – Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na) Lyrics 11 years ago
Am I really the first person to comment on this song? It's two years old! How can that be? I expected to see the obligatory slew of people logging on to say how much they loved the song. Oh well..

I'm not so certain that the meaning of this song is self evident. The feel of it sure seems to be a departure from the past. Instead of bleeding emo all over it is quite fun-loving and thumbs it's nose at the serious nature of their previous hits.

I think the MEANING of this song is pretty straight forward. However, there might be some hidden meaning in the title. Why the hell is this song called "Pelican"?

The Old 97's – Cryin' Drunk Lyrics 12 years ago
Walker lives on an island
I'm still stuck in the south
Walker lives off his hands now
I still live off my mouth

The only difference is you've got integrity, I don't
Only difference is I'll do a lot of things you won't
You'd like to think I'm sleeping very peacefully, I'm not
I'm cryin drunk, I'm cryin drunk, I'm cryin drunk

Walker says you're a cancer
I just say you're the flu
Oh but then I'm a virgo
I'm no match for you

Yeah the only difference is that I pretend that it's
alright
So far I've pretended I can make it through the night
You'd like to think I'm sleeping very peacefully, I'm not
I'm cryin drunk I'm cryin drunk I'm cryin drunk

You'd like to think I'm sleepin very peacefully, I'm not
I'm cryin drunk, I'm cryin drunk, I'm cryin drunk

Brandi Carlile – I Will Lyrics 13 years ago
I've always thought this song had a totally different meaning. I always assumed it was about unrequited love. After all, lines like "You're not really in my life" and "You can't break a heart that wasn't even yours to break" and the coup de gras: "You can never be there for me in the end" lends itself to the singer falling in love with a married man -- or other taken lover. After all, what could "I will do the right thing" refer to if not to leave a situation that is both morally and ethically wrong? This is further supported when she sings "You've drawn heavy handed lines around morality" as well as "...it hurts to be the one that you'd regret".

Not much of a stretch, I think this song is about that excellent time when you first meet someone that you think you are interested in. When you spend that first night talking all night long and getting to know each other's past.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Where Was My Brain? Lyrics 14 years ago
Ted Leo frustrates me. I've been trying to like Ted and his Pharmacists for something like 20 years now. This whole album is an example of why I feel hypocritical when I call myself a fan: I simply do not ever really understand where he's coming from.

In my opinion this song is the best on the album, partially because it is so understandable. Clearly, this song is about looking back at previous decisions (youth?) and realizing that some of your actions and decisions were foolish.

1.) "I heard new music on the radio/I thought that gradual dissolution would be the way to go" attempting to appeal to more of the masses by increasing pop influence to his music when he should have stayed true to his own muse.

2.)"Modern agriculture gave me a thrill/Until I saw the things it brutally kills" This does not require interpretation - it is so painfully straightforward that I refuse to elaborate.

3.)"Modern architecture gave me a kick/Until I lived among the Brutalist bricks" Living in the cold, hard city has it's downfall. People are often lured to the city with it's skyscrapers and other 'modern architecture' only to realize that it's a dog-eat-dog world in the city.

4.) "All the suffering evened out in the end/Stars and scriptures had some things to portend" Uhhh... your guess is as good as mine, probably better.

5.) "Thought that I could speak my mind but avoid a fight/I'd do it all and make sure everybody's doing alright" This speaks to the classic mistake of youth... attempting to keep everyone happy - especially while pushing an agenda. This line works in so many ways that it is easy to come up with examples. A new manager who pushes his employees and then is surprised when they hate him, a young hippie who thinks he can change the world just by explaining his position to the right people, so many more.

Where was his brain? It was with him all the time, getting it wrong again! The fallacy of youth and inexperience viewed through the eyes of experience. (Hindsight is 20/20)

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The Gold Finch And The Red Oak Tree Lyrics 19 years ago
Not unlike many other Ted Leo songs, this one seems to preach to the simple pleasures in life. The fact that beauty is everywhere and the concept of love, so misunderstood and complicated sometimes, can be simple and beautiful. We can all be taught something by a golden finch sitting in a tree.

The last two lines in this song make my cry openly and I can't figure out why. Does anyone have any insight into the last two lines?

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Shake the Sheets Lyrics 19 years ago
I think there's also a touch of frustration in that line, bocmaxima. When he says "When will we find a chord as resonant as to shake the sheets and make us move?" it feels to me as if he's saying when will people respond to music (and the messages in it) in the same way that they (we) respond to manipulation from the media? You know what I mean?

The Old 97's – Crash On The Barrelhead Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't pretend to be very good at gleaning song meanings, but this one is pretty straight-forward. What I find interesting is the play on words: "You're gonna crash on the barrelhead" being so close to the phrase "Cash on the barrelhead."

If the song is a warning about the wayward life of a young man, with his excesses in drinking and whoring around, then the reference to cash on the barrelhead becomes more intereesting.

Oh, Come ON! Ted Leo was in Seattle on my Birthday and I didn't know it? Sorry, that was off topic, but I was wondering if anyone could help me work out the line: "And the french foreign legion You know they did their best - but I never believed in t.e. What does THAT mean?

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The Angels' Share Lyrics 19 years ago
For anyone (like me) who is looking for a little clarification:
---------
an·gel's share n. Informal
The quantity of an alcoholic liquor lost to evaporation during the distilling process.
---------
Although it's obvious that this song is not about liquor, the definition did help me grasp the meaning of this song better.
