Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, this is such a groovy song. Conor writes the most amazing lyrics. Anyways, here's my random interpetation.
I think this song is basically social commentary. We live in an insane, materialistic, society. “We must talk in every telephone”, urges us that more is better. We “rip out all the epilogues from the books we have read”, refusing to learn from the past because we may not like what it needs to say to us. Society is unable to accept the concept of an unhappy ending, or any ending at all. Our society is very hypocritical. We have endless rules that we must conform to in order to fit in. We must “blend into the choir, sing a static with the whole”. It is better to be wrong then to be lonely. Society demands that we conform, no matter what the cost. “We must stare into a crystal ball and only see the past”. Despite all of our miraculous technology and new ideas, we do not have any way to completely guarantee anything that may happen in the future. The alternative to all this is to take life lightly; live in the moment. In the long run, we are “really no one”, so why worry while we are still here?
