'...and a strange fear gripped me and i just couldn't ask' is typical of young, shy men who can pluck up the courage to go for the first kiss. absolutely the best lyrics ever (imho). being so happy you wouldn't mind dying is not a concept that i've ever got though. the reason it's take me out rather than take me home is that he feels he's living a boring life but also that he is scared of sex. |

'haven't had a dream for a long time' says to me that he's got one now, and has some hope. that and the fact that 'the luck i've had' not turning him bad (a good person despite his life) stop this from being the most depressing song ever. incidentally the instrumental cover version by The Dream Academy is the gallery music from Feris Bueller's Day Off. lovely version too. |

i would say that the driving the point home making him smile is his realisation that being clever is better than being smug and taking you victories from other's failures. wit will always let you cut people down to size. |

the 'throw your homework into the fire line' is a nod to 'kooks' by david bowie, the song that he wrote to his newly born son. that is all about advice in growing up, something that is echoed in this song. |
