The Guess Who – No Sugar Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
at the end of the dual song, when they're doing the "da da da" thing, if you listen closely you can hear a guy speaking saying "mother... nature... sugar... sugar... sugar... "

Anywhom, this song is about loneliness and not having your "sugar" or gf/bf to "stand beside me" and "run with me"

The lyrics are interesting tho, because they are hard to understand, almost like a paradox: "Silent footsteps crowding me" "Grabbing for me with her eyes" - which just makes the song even deeper

Led Zeppelin – Whole Lotta Love Lyrics 18 years ago
In the part after the first chorus, it's not "yearnin'", if you listen you hear it's 3 syllables. I hear "deservin'", but according to Chris Federico's "Accurate Led Zeppelin Lyrics" page (this is a guy who actually did his research), it's "discernin'".
Additionally, in the chorus just prior to the instromenal break, he says "Wanna whole lotta love, I don't want more". Then in the middle of the break, he says "You've got to bleed on me" (again, this is according to Federico). And, of course, at the 'climax' of the 'orgasm' he sings "love... looooove".
Just some things the lyrics above missed.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's "Let the photos be bold" too. That pretty much speaks for itself.

The Cars – Good Times Roll Lyrics 18 years ago
When I hear "Thunder Appeal", I think of the loud noise of thunder and the "Thunder of Applause" associated with it sometimes, and the word Appeal, like that of the public appeal. So I thought Thunder Appeal meant a lot of people really really like it.
Let the masses be on your side?

Tho the Sexual Appeal does seem to make some sense too, for enjoying time and letting the good times roll.

Jethro Tull – Cross-Eyed Mary Lyrics 18 years ago
We don't find out that she's underage until halfway through the song.
"and the jack knife barber drops her off at school"
Jackknife barbers were common during the American era of Anti-abortion (when abortion was illegal). People would go to abortion barbers to do it illegally. Hense the name. She's already past adolecense because she had to have an abortion. But she's still young enough to go to school and play on a playground. I'll leave it up to you guys who aren't from America to decide what age that is. I doubt a 20-22 year old would "laugh on a playground" tho.

I love the intro flute part. It makes me visualize a forest setting or some sort of peaceful atmosphere, and then it suddenly drops you into the cynicism.

Jethro Tull – Aqualung Lyrics 18 years ago
I saw an explanation of the album by Ian Anderson once. Aqualung is a lowerclass guy that Ian seems to take sympathy for. The usage of "eyeing little girls with bad intent" and "watching as the frilly panties run" suggests that Aqualung is probably a pedophile, and "Snot running down his nose -
greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes." does 2 things: it reinforces the stereotypical image of a pedophile as a dirty homeless bum, and it shows that he is certainly lowerclass.

Jethro tull sympathises with the lower-class with the lines "Aqualung my friend - don't you start away uneasy
you poor old sod, you see, it's only me."
He sympathises with them perhaps as stated before, because established religion has made them outcasts. This reflects the album text (in the beginning..) very well.

What I'm still trying to figure out is what a "dog-end" is. I did notice the image of a Dog on the inside of the cover of the CD, but I doubt it's a literal term (why would one pick from the buttocks of a dog?).
It's an excellent prelude to Cross-Eyed Mary, which is about a young girl who seeks casual sex with old men (letching gray, basically meaning an old man who constantly seeks sex).

Led Zeppelin – Celebration Day Lyrics 18 years ago
This seems to tell the story about a woman who is fighting for the wrong/losing side. It reminds me a lot of America, and the freedom vs. protection fight.
"She hears them talk of new ways to protect the home she lives in,
Then she wonders what it's all about when they break down the door."

I'm thinking it might have something to do with the race movement, because of the reference to the Promised Land (King's speech) and "Her name is Brown or White or Black" and then the reference to a train (underground railroad). The price may have increased because it's harder to escape to freedom. If you walk, a lot of slaves broke free without the aid of the underground railroad.
Going back up to the top, "Her face is cracked from smiling, all the fears that she's been hiding" slaves had to hide their fears from their slaveholders else they'd get whipped until their skin cracked/bled.
"Her voice is sore from shouting...dance and sing in celebration" the way slaves sang about freedom.
Joining the band may mean joining the railroad.
"it seems pretty soon everybody's gonna know" eventually all the slaves will know about the railroad, and so will the slaveholders who will promptly up security.

I'm not sure why winning is considered with so much sarcasm. Perhaps a pessimistic view from a [ex-]slave?

I'm probably wrong, it's probably about something else, but hey, it fits pretty well.
I'm surprised there's not more comments on this song.
I love the dark undertone and the sarcasm, it just adds so much to the song. The pessimism really makes it interesting, added with the cryptic lyrics, it really makes you wonder (heh).

@roadrunner99: I'd like to see some justification for how it even vaguely relates to a pact with satan. I don't care if it might be a common and pessimistic view of zeppelin, it would still be interesting to see your interpretation of the song.

Led Zeppelin – The Battle of Evermore Lyrics 18 years ago
Idunno about you guys, but when I listen to the second-last bit

"Oh dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light.
The magic runes are writ in gold to bring the balance back. Bring it back. "

It sounds to me like he says "sing to the morning [something] light", the [something] seems to consist of "mm" or something - I was thinking "moon", "sing to the morning moonlight". It was common in mythological religions to worship the moon, especially when it was the full moon - producing the most light, sometimes enough to be able to see your own shadow.

Does anyone else have any takes on what's going on in there? It certainly seems to stick out, and I'm surprised that no lyrics sites - not even ones that take pride in being accurate - account for it.

Why "tangerine"?
Is that a name? I thought it was a fruit, which makes me question it's relevance.

Supertramp – Breakfast in America Lyrics 19 years ago
Quoted from The Very Best of Supertramp, the little booklet that hangs in the front.

Everyong thinks that the song "Breakfast in America" came from the band's experiences of living in America. When i actuality, it was one of the band's oldest songs. Roger wrote it when he was 18. "Actually, when I wote it, I hadn't been to America," informs Roger.

Now, I don't know if you can really say Roger was high at 18 when he wrote the song, but I guess that's open to interpretation.

I like what I've heard so far.
I think of this as "I'm not really knocked out by my girlfriend, but hey, it's about all there really is"

About the following comment:
They must eat like kings 'cos they're all millionaires.
I'd think of it as the other way around.
They must be millionaires to afford such a king-like eating habbit. If you weren't born in America and come over, your first impression is normally "Everyone's so fat"

Supertramp – Goodbye Stranger Lyrics 19 years ago
Compare the first two sections with Led Zeppelin - Ramble On

Leaves are falling all around,
It’s time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, I’m much obliged
For such a pleasant stay....

Ramble on.

Led Zeppelin, I believe, refers to a one-night stands or the likes in some songs, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was another of them. Also, with Supertramp, it seems a little more clear.
Section 4 reflects this as well, especially line 4.

Section three really reflects on School, in which I believe refers to a kid discovering the truth about life. In this, he says he respects the other people's views, but he has his own beliefs to keep his fantasy alive.
Also section 6 reflects this with the first 4 lines.
Perhaps he had an argument with a freethinker, and they just agree to disagree.

Now here's the fun part (starting at section 6).
Notice all the references to Marijuana. It all seems a play on words now.

Hope you find your paradise
Hope your dreams will all come true
Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane
Feel no sorrow, feel no shame
Come tomorrow, feel no pain

Now also link the Marijuana idea with the freethinker idea as follows:

You can laugh at my behavior
That'll never bother me
Say the devil is my savior
But I don't pay no heed...
I'll never look behind me
My troubles will be few

Supertramp, despite (or perhaps because of) their drugs, seem like deep thinkers to me, and that's what makes their songs so great to me.

Led Zeppelin – No Quarter Lyrics 19 years ago
-warning, long post-

I like to look at song lyrics as a little story, rather than trying to find references to other stories.

"To build a dream for me and you", It's like two or more people, who take a path during winter, to bring love and peace to humanity.
Wearing steel doesn't really fully fit in with the story, though. Unless they're planning on fighting something. And the Dogs of Doom don't quite make sense, either (unless they're a reference to the death that the snow/cold tolls). But when you put the two together, it might hit something.
I used to think "No Quarter" meant Out of Money. Then I saw that it can also mean No Housing. Both of these make sense, they have given up or found no need for these things, because the deed they are about to do is for the greater of humanity, so they are not self-centered at all - and they may even be building such a dream in which society does not need money or material posessions.

Walking side-by-side with death is a figure of speech meaning you're almost dead, or toying with death, but barely hanging on to life. The devil mocks their every step, meaning the devil - or controller of death, mocks them as they barely hang on to life.

"They choose the path where no-one goes". When there's a thick layer of snow on the ground, and it's fairly fresh, you have trouble finding paths or even footprints or signs of other humans. You may even stray from standard paths, or at least feel like you're taking a new one since you see no sign of anyone else having taken it.

The interesting part is the narrator. He's telling someone to "Close the door, put out the light.", because this group won't be coming home, they've abandoned it for the greater good of mankind (question being, how's he know, and who's he telling?).
And then the narrator goes on to say "The pain, the pain without quarter." Like he couldn't imagine what it would be like to have no housing/money (signifying his greed, for he is simply another member of society); he may just be about to find out with the dream that is about to come.

Persue your happeness however you may find it.
This song is eerie, and that's what makes me like it so much.
