For part of my American Sign Language final, I have the oportunity to translate a song. I have picked this song, because I think it's beautifully written (like most of BG's songs.) Unlike most of ASL song translations, which are word for word, literal translations, I have to translate what he means. Here is what I get from this song: Being reminded of home conjures up different emotions for different people, but for the most part home would usualy conotate feelings of comfort, safety, or nostalgia. So generally If someone reminds you of home, it would be for reasons of feeling safe with that person or comfortable around he/she. In this case though, Ben G. goes on to explain what parts of home this person reminds him of. For the part of paint cracking from rusty water pipes under his feet, doesn't bring about those usual emotions of home. Instead "she" reminds him of broken waterpipes that are hidden beneath the surface and the cause of decay in his home. "She" reminds him of his heater, which is warm but fills his house with burnt deust, and gas. So this person has good qualities but comes along with some unfortunate catches. This person also reminds him of his broken dirty bed, which probably keeps him up at night. and his boring town, which enforces the idea that he is sitting around wasting his time in this relationship. then for the chorus pt. he explains that the foundation to his house is crumbling and disapearing, which I feel is a reference to the basis of his relationship falling apart. and the pt. where he says as"you" wait there in slumber, "you" are wasting "your" life etc., I feel as him trying to convince himself that he is wasting his time as he stays in this relationship or decaying house as he makes it to be. |

| I was so shocked that no one posted the lyrics to this version of Proudest Monkey in songmeanings.net or the dmbalmanac.com. The Red Rocks version has completely different lyrics than the original. Although the lyrics may have been impromptu, and there are a lot of parts where Dave scats instead of singing, I find this version to be quite insightful as to what Dave may have had in mind when writing this song. These are how I interpreted the lyrics, and there may be some who disagree, but for the most part I believe these lyrics to be pretty accurate (PM me if there should be any changes). I also did my best to interpret the scatting, so that maybe we can take a stab at interpreting what Dave may have wanted to say. Enjoy | |

First off, DMBFORLIFE11, you're an cunt! Every song has different meanings and interpretations to different people. In fact, many artist purposely write ambiguous lyrics, so that people can interpret them differently. I even believe this song may have changed meanings for Dave himself over the 16 years he has been playing it. Before DMB played Proudest Monkey on 6.19.96, Dave had said this about the song. It is obvious that Isaac is no stranger to drugs. He mentions them a lot in his songs and interviews. So Im not arguing that this may be about taking too many Dramamine pills. But personally I believe it's about the up and downs of a relationship and he is for some reason sticking with it, and he needs Dramamine( hypothetically) to deal with the side affects of the relationship. Here is my reasoning. I somehow came across a book written about MM by an unauthorixed biographer. He had done a lot of research and interviews of people close to the band like isaacs parents, friends and what not. He explained that in an article the band did about their album this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about, they had to drive hella far away torecord in some studio ( can't remember but I think it was something like eight hours each way. And isaac was in a relationship with a girl and still working back home so he made the trip several times a week. From what he said, most of those songs were writen on those long drives. The book also says that most of what Isaac says to reporters are a far fetch from the truth and a calculated move in order to portray a specific image. |

^On the fence, could not to offend^ - lyrics up top First off I would like to say I believe the line is "on the fence, as not to offend"- but i could be wrong This basically means your not choosing sides, in order to not offend anyone. The subject of that could be interpreted as not choosing sides on religion, politics, etc. But I honestly believe he is talking about being on the fence between heterosexuality and homosexuality. Many people choose not to express their sexuality as to not offend people. AND it is not unheard of for Dave to have some interesting lyrical mix-ups in his songs that would suggest he may be bisexual or at least experimented. One being I forget the date but Dave sings in "say goodbye" which is about a one night stand, something like you have your wife and I have my wife. Just an interesting interpretation which goes along with the majority of other people’s interpretations about the song. |

I believe the missing word is "uncomfortably" numb Well this song is a great opener to a great CD (Do Wrong Right). In fact I bought this album soley by it's album art. Somehow it cought my eye enough to buy it with out even knowing what genre it was. When I popped it in my radio I was upset because it sounded real folky almost bluegrassy. Then the lyrics kicked in and caught my attention enough to listen on, I think it was the line "here she comes just a skin and bones skeleton she's food for the crack cocaine" I absolutely loved the entire album. A great buy! Enough with the blabber though, this song I thought was about our need to consume, but i get thrown off by the last verse. Oviously he is talking about perscription meds and the personality which is lost by taking them. IDK |

| The "Plastic God" version of Kit Kat Jam is by far the best. I can't find the lyrics anywhere. I'll have to listen to a version I have and interpret them on here. But It is a little pointless (like dpu2002 said) because since it is a jam, the lyrics are mostly improvised and changed everytime. Which is why i am so amazed by this song. Ok I completeley agree with "yamahasixstring" and the moonshine theory. Johnnie is in the the basement making booze, which is commonly refered to as "grandpas cough medicine". then an off duty cop comes down who is in need for his cough medicine, but wants it free, like payin' him off for not arresting him. although I think this is a metaphor for cooking drugs during the sixties. just like everyone who has commented, I believe is a rant about what society tells youth to do, to follow a straight path. Yet the kids don't. follow this path they. they do things like take amphetemines, wear sandals, protest, blah blah. |

For one I don't know if this is a song which strictly deals with ther struggle of addiction, but whether Dave struggling with something, (death of his sister Anne, and or his father) and then turning to drugs, to forget. I think the lines towards the end are "the needle, she is my great escape" not makes my great escape. meaning This is what he turns to in order to escape from his unrelenting painful thoughts. Or atleast in some live versions I am sure this is what he says. I have read many things which state that Dave is agnostic and or atheist, yet many of his lyrics suggest he has some deep rooted spiritual beliefs. First off, I'm not trying to bash my second favorite band of all time. I love this album although i feel it has an extremely poppy sound, I see the need for modest mouse to grow, and you can never blame a band for wanting to make money. I FEEL... This song is Isaac looking back at his carrer in retrospect. Facing the fact that they sold their soul for some pop fame. The line : "I was knocking on your ear's door Don't worry, you were always out" means where were all these so called fans ten years ago. it was only recently the masses started listening to our music. And now that they are looking at their future (post epic) they've realized all they really want is their past (pre epic) Now he is embarrassed at himself, and he feels that his original fans are ashamed. Then the next verse talks about how it seemed so easy to make that step up, and where he would have been laughing all the way to the bank, he realizes that all the fame and money is actually hell. A play on selling your soul to the devil. The line well we didn't need the water, is a reference to actually not needing the pop success. The main idea of this song, and i think the whole album is that there is no turning back, modest mouse has missed their boat, and their chance to be true to their roots. But hey it was a nice promotion. |

| Just a few things, I am a strong believer of songs having double meanings, and for the individual to interpret a song as he/she wishes. Not saying this is right or anything but just something to think about, but some things to think about Angeles is Spanish for Angels, and he could be speaking of angel dust, which is a common slang term for PCP in the 90's (Which CAN be injected). Well, as I have been to a lot of "meetings" and what a lot of people refer to addictions as is a relationship. If you smoke, then you always know that you can depend on this relationship, you spend time with this joint, and you can be sure you will get an effect. It is almost a comforting thing to know that, and to me this song expresses that symbolism, but this doesn't mean it can be about the struggle he had with selling out. That is the beauty of music, things can have so many meanings to so many different people, just let people have their own interpretations. But I still love listening to the song with the music industry in mind, because it is like a whole new song to me, because I always thought about drugs when I listened to this song and now I have this other interpretation, which makes me love this song so much more. I love this so much, thank you Elliott, for giving so many things to us before you left. You will be remembered through so many people. True beauty | |

Okay first of all, this is exactly what Isaac means when he says that he hates explaining meanins of their songs, i am amazed with all the interpretations, they all have their strong points, and weaknesses. Songs are meant to be for the individual, read these interpretations and pick the meaning that best fits you, you'll like the song a helll of a lot more. Personally, i have done some drugs that really make you think a lot about yourself, and i think this song is him looking at himself while he is deep into the depths of a drug binge, and the line "You ask me what size it is, not what I sell" followed by the sarcastic laugh, is him thinking back to a conversation with a dealer, and him just asking how much do you have, instead of what you have. (when in a drug binge, you don't care what it is you just want something, and a lot of it.) |

the first couple of lyrics remind me of the movie memento too. Which is about a guy that has no short time memory so he tattoos important facts on his arm. These facts lead him to the end of the movie (or if you've seen it, the beggining) which is disaster. I don't know if anyone eles thought at the begining of this song instead of ride, ride, they were saying WHITE LIES, which fits into the story well, seeing that the sitcoms and fictitious shows are lies that don't seem to bother anyone, but yet they cause a lot of problems with youth today. Like kids reenacting cartoons, and other shows, or girls trying to be like the girls on the OC, there just little lies, but they have bigger consequences than originally thought... This song is by far the most beautiful songs off their first CD. I was so upset when the lyrics wernt on here, and i couldn't get an official copy of them, so i wrote them my self, so if there are any mistakes let me know and i will do my best to fix them appropriately. I was captured by this song from the get go. There is a painting by Van Gogh called "Crows in the Wheatfield" and the crows are flying out of a wheatfield and basically splitting the sky. Other than this is during the day and the song depicts the night, the real resemblance is that this painting was the last painting Van Gogh did before his death. I guess all good thing must come to an end. |

| I love how some of you from Issaquah, WA talked about Tripple X. It is actually what i came to this thread for. Whenever i heard this song i always thought of straight edge kids and xhardcorex kids. XXX or tripple X, and plus that scene is really big into root beer and I love that it is a real place in Isaac's hometown too.
