Conor Oberst – Nikorette Lyrics
|
It would appear that nobody else cringes upon hearing such drivel from the once great mouth of Mr Oberst. Though the lyrics don't quite match some of the horseshit on the new album in terms of crapness, the tune is inexcusably poor. "na na na na na na na na na na na" like a bastardised nursery rhyme...I had to turn it off after about a minute.
Just thought some perspective was needed here. A few years ago, this guys was writing some of the most poignant and beautiful songs I'd ever heard: wonderfully perceptive lyrics coupled with glorious melodies. Now he's churning out this shite - what a massive shame.
"It's better to burn out than to fade away" to paraphrase Neil Young (but not in the way Kurt Cobain took it to mean) and poor old Conor Oberst seems in serious danger of doing the latter at the moment.
Thankfully there are songs like Milk Thistle on there as well, these offer some hope.

How can you buy/borrow anything you have? Unless, of course, you have a severe split-personality disorder....Neil Young doesn't....he should have left it at "anything..." other than this, c'est une chanson magnifique! |

Rilo Kiley – Jenny, You're Barely Alive Lyrics

Em, right well....DCFCAlex...that is some over-reaction...psycho! She wrote this song about me directly, she told me yesterday. Even though I'm male and not called Jenny...ha! Jesus, some people...I mean, it's pretty obvious that andthesoilx doesn't actually believe she wrote this song about him/her...you crazy humourless weirdo. No need for phrases like "egotistical prick"....take everything with a pinch of salt...if you spend your whole life being so serious you'll be heading for an early grave and an empty ceremony...
I don't know why I spent so much time on that but....what a dull person you must be! Ha...sorry, where was I? Oh yes...the song IS about me.....not. I like it though...fun, nice, happy, cheerful....ugh. I don't even know where to begin....I suppose the start....couldn't be bothered now...good song. That is all.
I think you are the real narcissist....but aren't we all slightly narcissistic anyway...better than self-loathing... |

Thom Yorke – Black Swan Lyrics

Unfortunately "hippy morons" are not in the majority except when it comes to groups such as "fans of left-wing, socially-conscious musicians/bands" (that shouldn't really be in quotation marks but it helps to define the sentence).
And I don't see how someone is a "hippy moron" if they are merely concerned with the fact that the human race is unlikely to be in existence in 20 years time if we keep going the way we currently are. I prefer the term "sensible, logical people" to the term "hippy morons" as it is far closer to the truth. So take some acid and chill out with a big spliff man, that way you can at least momentarily forget about the ticking time-bomb that is this planet.......(!!!) ha, blah...spa |

Ok, felt I had to comment. Maybe the dead horse is Britain...formerly THE world superpower, now nothing more than America's bitch. Anti-Blair song then:
"Buy a ticket and get on the train"...fuck off Blair you ain't doin your country or the world no good. This fits in with the rest of the lyrics...
"And lay down in the bitumen": blood for oil, conspiracy theorists claim the war in Iraq is mainly to do with getting a huge pipeline built to give the West greater control of world oil supplies, bitumen is a compound found in petroleum and can be used as fuel as well as in other areas.
"People get crushed like biscuit crumbs"...huge death tolls in Iraq, including increasing numbers of British soldiers.
"You have tried your best to please everyone, But it just isn't happening": reference to how Blair is a complete coward who rarely does anything other than follow the leader, in this case Bush?
I don't know if I'm right on any of this buI thinkt it is an interpretation worth considering |

Bright Eyes – Easy/Lucky/Free Lyrics

Three pages of comments and not one person has mentioned Plato\'s Phaedo! One person even claimed that the idea of death as a release was a unique idea of Conor\'s!
The Phaedo is one of the greatest philosophical works of all time and it appears likely that it was one of the main sources of inspiration for this song and for this album. It tells of Socrates\' last conversation before he is excecuted and how he argues for the immortality of the soul(i.e. it exists before birth and after death, for eternity). Socrates(it is universally accepted by scholars that this concept is actually Plato\'s but that he expresses it through Socrates) is utterly convinced that in death he will finally achieve pure wisdom(which, he argues, is the one pursuit of the philosophic mind) and therefore happiness, free from the body which has held him back with its attempts to corrupt his soul.
While Conor is clearly nowhere near the same level of thought and brilliance as Plato was, he is nevertheless putting forward essentially the same ideas. There are other songs where he borrows ideas from Plato\'s Phaedo too: A Scale, A Mirror and Those Indifferent Clocks where he refers to \"a concept of absolute beauty\" and in Laura Laurent \"her eyes seem to follow you, like a hated addiction...their beauty carved out of absolutes...\"
This concept of absolutes and the Beautiful Itself(i.e. that which all beautiful things in this world are modelled upon and similar to) is part of one of Plato\'s three main arguments for the immortality of the soul.
Conor is not the only poet(for that is essentially what he is) to write on this Platonic theme, for another example see William Wordsworth\'s Ode to Immortality.
Sorrry to leave such a long comment, I usually don\'t comment at all but that is because usually all that needs to be said about a song has already been said...I felt that the above needed to be said, I hope it is not overly boring. |

Albert Hammond – Free Electric Band Lyrics

Best lyrics I've heard in a good while. Admittedly this song sounds quite cheesy but the sentiment is undeniably what it is all about. I just want to play this to every workaholic, every lawyer and businessman who looks down on anyone with an inferior income, everyone who doesn't appreciate music and every Paris Hilton type in the world....maybe they'd all listen and be inspired to change the way they live.....probably not though....still, I'd like to play it to them anyway. |

Adam Cohen – Cry Ophelia Lyrics
|
Presumably not about Shakespeare's Ophelia, rather he sees Ophelian characteristics in this girl. Sounds to me like she may indeed be a lady of the night but I don't really see any concrete evidence to suggest that it is a trans-gender person. In short I agree with what Jenna said. Jenna, when you say that it reminds you so much of yourself, does this mean that you are a trans-gender prostitute?! |

I don't like commenting on songs anymore cuz every time iread someone elses comment i think to myself "what the fuck are you telling us about your depression for? tell us what you think the bloody song means. so many comments seem very self-indulgent and almost crying out for sympathy. all you're going to find here is empathy, but no-one likes to hear about how others also have bad times. talk to friends or family or, as a last resort, a therapist".
...good song though....suicide theory works for me.......
by the way, I'm REALLY depressed......lol |

Bright Eyes – When the Curious Girl Realizes She Is Under Glass Lyrics

this was the first bright eyes song i ever heard and i liked it so i got some of his stuff and i liked some of it a lot and other stuff not so much but i still think he is pretty damn good and an excellent lyricist although............
he is sometimes a bit vague but i suppose that is what happens when one writes personal songs but it would be nice if the theme was clearer in some of his songs but this one is nice and a bit weird and that's what i think makes him good: he's a bit weird and still coherent and not lacking in melody....by the way the severe lack of punctuation in this comment is intentional; (Joycian, no?!) |

this is a song directed at her father loudon wainwright III and in my opinion it's her best by far. she really rips into him and you can just tell he deserves it. he left the family when she and brother rufus were really young and they have both written songs confronting him( rufus' is called dinner at eight). |

lalalalalalalala...why do people come onto sites like this and proclaim to have discovered the meaning behind the song only to give us an interpretation that a 10 year old child wouldn't have too much difficulty in discovering? "it's about a girl who was rich once and now she's not so rich and bob's happy cuz he doesn't like the hierarchical nature of society"....wait, most of you didn't even go that deep! thank you to all the people who informed me that it is probably about edie sedgewick, that was genuinely helpful...the rest of you guys, you've gotta go behind the surface meaning a little bit...come on, it's not that difficult!
it's not a bad song either, is it? |

oh yes, it's clearly that specific, bored tom....i mean the line "waiting in the methadone line for my dose" kind of gives it away! everyone is entitled to say what they think it's about and the reason most interpretations of most Elliott Smith songs work is precisely because he isn't so specific......you could be right-i don't think you are-but don't tell people they got it wrong when you have no evidence suggesting that your interpretation is correct.

ok....downloaded it...sounds great.....
psilogon, it is quite clearly a literal reference to abuse..."charlie beat u up every night" and the bit about Gacy....
other than the ist line .."junkie dream", there is no reference to drugs so i dont think this song is about drugs.....
"you're a symphony man, with one fucking note" is possibly referencing the fact that alot of his songs seem to be about drugs and this could link-in with the "junkie dream" bit but i doubt it since the song is early......still, lovely song...........one of his most personal and straightforward(!)......................RIP |

Radiohead – Myxomatosis. (Judge, Jury, & Executioner.) Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
this song is surely about the writer's block thom experienced while trying to create new material for what would become Kid A. he has spoken about how difficult he found it to write anything after OK Computer and i think that this is highlighting this fact. the "half a head" could be the new, fresh, electronic music he was experimenting with.
"i dont know why i feel so tongue-tied"....writers block
his new ideas werent so radical but then they got "edited, fucked-up" and what came out was Kid A and later Amnesiac.
"that wasnt my intention, i did it for a reason" fits in with the Kid A theme as well...so does "no-one likes a smart arse but we all like stars".
anyway, i tend not to comment on radiohead songs as they speak for themselves but this one is a bit more complicated and i felt the need t o say something.......just my opinion.......and if anyone has already said this, then i apoplogise but i didnt read all the interpretations just the 1st few |
