I think its about a guy who didnt follow societies rules, and dared to 'be different' or himself, and because of this people dont like him, but he would rather have people hate him for who he is. In my opinion this shows up in most metallicas early songs.

I think this song is about a young man who grew up trying to appease society (ex fitting in or pleasing others) throughout his entire life, but it was never good enough. Now he is an old man, and he wishes he didnt waste his life.

I think its about the struggle to believe in god, and how you want to believe but there isnt anything to reassure you. Also, allot of people say that even if you dont believe in god, going to church isnt a waste of time because you led a good life, and maybe this is seen as a waste to James.

I think instead of drugs its about a struggle with god, and the helpless feeling you have and how you cant really help whats going around you, and how god is supposed to be there for you if you follow him, but instead you get nothing...

To me... I think this song is about a kid who had a very abusive father. In the long run, his child hood memories are mainly of him being beaten. In the long run, it makes him mentally unstable, ruining the rest of his life...but thats what I think.
