Falconer – Portals Of Light Lyrics 18 years ago
You can just visualize him singing this while sitting in a hospital room as he's watched his true love slip away from him.. He's obviously in mourning and hoping she has contentment after death (Portals of Light, meaning heaven's gates?). He also ponders what's in store for his own life after she's gone and how he'll ever find a sense of hope again.

What a beautiful song..

Sonata Arctica – Mary-Lou Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with rebelj1's post.

Also, when it says, "Sunshine or rain, it's all the same, life isn't gray"... I believe this means the person in the song wants Mary Lou to see things as black or white, with no grey area inbetween. She has to let go of the guy who betrayed her in her life and move on.

Sonata Arctica – Draw Me Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song may be a distant reference to an amazing but true story that happened in the early 1900s.

There was a painter named Andre Marcellin who did beautiful landscapes - people would often ask him to do portraits, but he would refuse. At last, a banker persuaded Andre to paint him, and 2 days after the portrait was finished, the banker died.

6 months later, a lady came to him and asked to have her picture done - Andre agreed to paint her, but alas, 2 days later, the woman died.

After this, Andre was sure his paintings were cursed. He vowed never to paint a portrait of anyone again. And he kept his vow - until he met a lovely woman who he became engaged with. She begged him to do a portrait of her, and if he didn't, she wouldn't marry him. He was persuaded at last, and a week after he finished her portrait, she died.

Marcellin was filled with sadness and guilt. For weeks he sat alone in his studio, doing nothing. Finally, he started to work on another picture. This one was of himself. A few days after it was finished, Andre Marcellin, the great painter, was dead.

If you read the lyrics in this song, you can see where that historical true event could fit in. The end of the song is when tragedy strikes - he wants to draw a portrait of himself and is hoping for death, but in the morning, he awakens; death won't come to those who desire it.

Britney Spears – Baby One More Time Lyrics 19 years ago
THIS SONG HAS SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES IN IT IF YOU REVERSE IT.

Seriously.
When you reverse it, you can distinctly hear the words "SLEEP WITH ME, I'M NOT TOO YOUNG" at the beginning and throughout the song. I'm not kidding! See for yourself!!!! That was obviously implanted in there, that's not just coincidence. It's weiird.

Death from Above 1979 – Blood on Our Hands Lyrics 19 years ago
Ahaha, the piano scarf is a classic. Love their videos.

"There is blood on our hands again - From the bedroom is where we will bring it back to the start again, bring it back to the love we had" - Seems that this song is about him devirginizing a girl and feeling guilty and wishing he could start over because their relationship just went down the drain.

Buck 65 – 463 Lyrics 19 years ago
Seems to be questioning his childhood, and how things have changed in modern times, in reference to how kids view faith, the devil, etc. I believe the actual number 463 refers to the middle pillar in the bible, and in the lines "4-6-3 an x, an o", "4-6-3 as yes, a no", "4-6-3 it's life, death" , it's comparing opposites. Since 463 is in the middle, it's like he finds it hard to make decisions, being stuck in the middle.

Bright Eyes – A Poetic Retelling of an Unfortunate Seduction Lyrics 19 years ago
In response to venus_in_furs_28... Conor's voice sounds very similar to Lou Reed's, and a lot of their songs almost sound like Velvet Underground songs, due to the haunting acoustic nature...easy to see where you get that idea from.

On another note, this song is beautiful, one of the first Bright Eyes songs I heard. Literally, the song seems to be about seducing a virgin, but I like the idea that Steve pointed out with it having a deeper meaning: the person in the song being almost "seduced" by his own thoughts and having that sweet seduction reflected in his art. Great song!

"It was good what we did yesterday, and I'd do it once again.

But it's truly, truly a sin." ..Scandalous!

This song is so hauntingly beautiful.

The Velvet Underground – I Can't Stand It Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song! How are there not any comments?
The obvious literal meaning is that he wants his "Shelly" to come back and make everything better. Shelly could possibly also represent a drug that he desires...?

Either way, great song!

Metric – Succexy Lyrics 19 years ago
In my opinion, this song is all about desensitization to what's going on around us. "Nothing could beat complete denial" - "All we do is talk, sit, switch screens, as the homeland plans enemies" - "Passive attraction, programmed reaction".

It's like if you see a news story on a guy getting killed for the first time, you'll think Oh god that's horrible! But after seeing it 5, 10, 20 times over, you won't care so much, and soon it'll just be a common occurrence to see death, violence and tragedy on tv. You are being corrupted by CNN...o.o

Metric – Dead Disco Lyrics 19 years ago
"Everyone's the same... No one's got a face left to blame" is totally shunning how no one really has an identity and there's not really a such thing as being unique when you're always going to somehow fit into some other group. It goes for the music industry too - everything's been done. Where's the originality in modern music? So many bands duplicate eachother in an attempt to make their own songs sound unique.

Thankfully, disco died long ago.

Metric – Calculation (Theme) Lyrics 19 years ago
The synth backbeat gets annoying.. but you just can't resist Emily's sugar-sweet voice in this song while she's talking about this calculated overanalyzed lifestyle that so many people live. I love this song. "I’m sick, you’re tired, let’s dance. Cold as numbers but let’s dance." In my opinion, she wants to go back to a simplistic lifestyle where we didn't have such a one-track 9 to 5 life, and embrace the simple pleasures of just dancing and not having a care in the world.

Bauhaus – Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
This cover song was extremely well done. And that's a feat..I usually hate cover songs.

And wow! Bowie was definitely UNDERrated. He was/is a record producer, singer, songwriter, artist, internet entrepreneur, actor.. he did it all. And he's STILL going strong. No one I can think of has lasted as long as him in the music business, and he was pretty much *the one* to introduce more theatre and imagination into music in the 70s, and he also strongly nfluenced mainstream culture to widely accept the gay/lesbian community when it was shunned.

But back on topic.
Bauhaus are amazing! This cover song was simply stellar.

Scissor Sisters – Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
I didn't like this cover song. There's no emotion put into this song whatsoever, just a bunch of jangly techno beats with really high-pitched vocals that sound like the singer was slamming a door on her hand repeatadly and screeching. To be fair, I actually enjoy some Scissor Sisters songs.. just not this damn cover song.

The Pentangle – Cruel Sister Lyrics 19 years ago
This is such a beautiful haunting song.. my mom introduced me to it when I was 12 years old. I have no idea what "Lay the bent to the bonnie broom" means, but it is repeated every second line.. the song itself is obviously a story, about 2 girls: one blonde and one dark-haired (possibly representing good and evil?).

In the end (I don't feel like getting into the entire story), the harp created from the body of the blond-haired sister seems to speak actual words "the bride her younger sister drowned, and surely now her tears will flow." This seems to be the blond-haired girl (whose spirit basically resides in the harp) questioning if her black-haired sister will finally have some emotion and cry for her. Going with the good/evil comparison theme, it asks the question...can evil be tamed?

Hopefully that made sense, just my opinion on the piece. Such a wonderful song. :)

Project 86 – Shelter Me Lyrics 19 years ago
The most obvious literal meaning of the song would be simply the view of a drug addict. Taking all these pills and injecting all the needles is all that's keeping him sane, and he just can't stop himself.

But, this song could possibly have a more spiritual meaning: maybe the drugs he can't get enough of are his sinful desires and wrongful temptations. The person cannot seem to stop himself, "Distraction is all I need, All I need all I need to shelter me." He continues to seek this temporary high, trying to reach a state of happiness, without worrying about how much damage he may be doing to his own body/soul/mind ("Don't bother me with details, Don't bore me with what's real"). As with many drug addicts, he desires some kind of permanent high, some kind of eternal happiness. He is reaching out for something more but he doesn't know what it is, so he just keeps searching for the answer.

Project 86 – Soma Lyrics 19 years ago
The person in the song is being changed to fit into a particular group in society (ie: brainwashing). The title "Soma" refers to a mood-enhancing drug in the prophetic book "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. This drug makes the user completely free from all cares.

"And I'll become the model citizen, And I will tell them all that I had this breakthrough surgery: they give you a pill, they remove your heart, and replace it with a battery"

This seems to be a sarcastic point of view of how you would be brainwashed, you would lose your heart and any remnants of your old self and become almost like a robot. Without human emotion, you would be happy, at last.

Kansas – The Wall Lyrics 19 years ago
He wants to find something more in his life, and "pass beyond" the wall that is separating him into the unknown. This song is amazing when played how it should be: in vinyl, on an old record player. ;)

Kansas – Hold On Lyrics 19 years ago
This is such a wonderfully hopeful song. I think it's also very spiritual, ("Outside your door He is waiting, waiting for you... Let it all go and you'll know you're on the right track") is obviously talking about how you may feel your life is empty, but then you surrender yourself to God, which fills that void. "Cause there's something on the way, your tomorrow's not the same as today." Listening to this song gives me so much optimism about the future.

Kansas – Dust In The Wind Lyrics 19 years ago
He seems to be questioning what we were thrown on this world for. It's almost like he's saying everything's been done, we're all gonna die, what's the point. ("Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky"). He also recognizes the fact that people can be ignorant. ("All we do crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see"). We're all just insignificant dust particles, and we can't really do anything about it, no matter how rich we are, we can't buy more time to live on the earth, we're all gonna die. Lovely!

The Doors – Strange Days Lyrics 19 years ago
I've always believed that the "strange" idea Jim is trying to get across in his songs (people are strange, etc) is depression and feeling hopeless. Depression will "destroy our casual joys", and in the end, we are simply lonely ("we linger alone") as we "run from the day to a strange night of stone" - we're always running from our problems just to feel worse by the end of the day.

A lot of these songs couldn't be created without a good bit of acid, so maybe it's just all about the drugs...

The Doors – People Are Strange Lyrics 19 years ago
I think being "strange" refers to being depressed while you look around you and see that everyone else seems to be happy. You walk around town, you have no one to talk to, no one knows who you are, you just don't seem to fit in, and you just keep getting more depressed. You notice the tiniest details with things ("Streets are uneven when you're down"). You can't find hope in your life, and you overanalyze everything, especially other people around you. People are strange.

Bright Eyes – When the Curious Girl Realizes She Is Under Glass Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it is entirely fitting at the end when you can just barely make out the sound of a phone that's off the hook, which could represent him cutting himself apart from the world (suicide, loneliness, rejection, turning to reclusion from society). This song is so emotional. You can imagine him screaming the lyrics with tears running down his face but no one there to hear him since he has no way to communicate with the world at this point. He's reliving memories as many people will prior to committing suicide ("With her feet in the sand and one hand on her swimsuit, she will recite the prayer of my pen") which leads to a tiny glimpse of hope ("Saying, ..time take us forward"). The end of the song finalizes what he has been saying, and he is curious about what his life would look like from another person's point of view, behind the reflective glass of a display case.

Bright Eyes – One Foot in Front of the Other Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about innocence being corrupted by our own reality and how we're so ignorant to it.

"And Laura's asleep in my bed, As I'm leaving she wakes up and says, "I dreamed you were carried away, On the crest of a wave. Baby, don't go away. Come here." People look so innocent when they're sleeping, but what you can't see is what they're dreaming while they look so innocent on the outside. We're bottling up our opinions and if we don't do something about it, we may lose it all.

"And this kid's playing guns in the street, And one's pointing his tree branch at me, So I put my hands up, I say "Enough is enough. If you walk away, I'll walk away." And he shot me dead." Children are the epitome of innocence, and this line is so significant, how some kids are playing this game which could be seen as being violent, and Conor as the one being "victimized" says no, stop, ignore it and walk away, (if you walk away, i'll walk away) but the kid doesn't listen and "he shot me dead'. This is basically referring to politics and the war how we're so ignorant with everything that's happening around us and our first response is to get rid of what we don't like and start something much bigger than what we intended to do in the first place.

"We made love on the living room floor, With the noise in the background from a televised war, And in the deafening pleasure, I thought I heard someone say If we walk away, they'll walk away." Back to the idea of the war again. The man in the song is making love, and in his ignorant bliss he actually realizes from hearing the tv, why are we fighting? Let's just walk away, and maybe they'll back off and figure out that it's all pointless hope.

Bright Eyes – Waste of Paint Lyrics 19 years ago
A reply to Monstrel's question from a looong time ago, about a similar band to Bright Eyes. There is a mysterious man that comes to mind, he is a reclusive musician that goes by the name Jandek. No one really knows much about him, they only know who he is from the constant stream of haunting acoustic albums that he puts out, and the only way people can get his full albums is by mail. If you search "Jandek" on a download program you are likely to only find a few results, but a good song to get would be "They Told Me I Was A Fool" from 1979.

Conor Oberst is a huge Jandek fan and recorded a number called "Have You Ever Heard of Jandek?" where he went around on the street asking regular people if they had ever heard of him. True fans of Bright Eyes should look into this artist further. A very interesting listen.

Voivod – 21st Century Schizoid Man (King Crimson cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
Sort of obvious, by the title. It's basically centred on a man who has schizoid personality disorder living in modern times. A person with this disorder will often not react or not realize what is going on around them, they are often absorbed with their own thoughts and feelings, and are fearful of closeness and intimacy with others, making them introverted, cold and distant.

This song basically represents how everyone is becoming desensitized by what is happening in the modern world. We care more about ourselves than what is going on in other's lives. When it says 'nothing he's got he really needs', I think it means that he is realizing he is desensitized, and he doesn't need this. He wants to change how he is, but it's impossible to alter what you have been born with: a disorder. In the end, he feels there is no hope for someone like him in this world.
