The American Analog Set – The Postman Lyrics 15 years ago
because there are two versions to this song -- actually, three if you count the remix by styrofoam. this posted version, as i understand, came from a CD that was included with FADER magazine a few years back. the CD contains three exclusive, unreleased tracks from amanset (immaculate heart, the postman, play hurt) and three tracks from a band called white magic (day, twilight, night).

also just wanted to say: a beautiful song. one of my most listened to tracks of all time.

Death Cab for Cutie – Your New Twin Sized Bed Lyrics 16 years ago
taosnap, the line is an extension from the previous line. it's clear from the use of the conjunction "and." the person wrote on the sign:

"it's free (and) i hope you have more luck with this than me."

the lyrics really makes you feel for this character. a moving song.

"Truly lonely this place is flatter than it seems"

Listen closely to this line. You can really hear the dejection in Isaac's voice.

Ryan Adams – In My Time of Need Lyrics 18 years ago
Most of the lyrics are self-explanatory but still worth reviewing. It's obvious this couple married too young and took on the responsibility of raising children at an early age (maybe that's why they got married?). Now that the kids are grown up, the narrator reflects on the hardships of the past. The financial demands are evident, but I think the saddest part is the toll it took on the relationship.

"though it seems we had such little time for us."

He's spent the better part of his life sacrificing for the family and now he knows the end of his days are near.

"These old bones are worn, i've grown tiresome
i know my time is surely gonna come."

Despite the last verse, I never get the feeling that he's fully happy in the end. It's like he's content, his wife's smile will always bring him joy, but there's always that bit of melancholia inside that noone else will know. Just an incredibly sad song...

The video would suggest this song is about not being accepted, being labeled a "freak" by society. The opening track to this album also carries this theme of being an outsider.

the theme song for today's jaded gen x/y'er who's ever felt cynical, hopeless, confused, regretful... all at the same time.

This track on the silent alarm remixed album is ten times better than the original.

Yeah I agree the song may be a little over the top. But in the time of war and natural disasters, I find such a song inspiring. This track alone should make Apologies.. the album of the year.

The Postal Service – This Place Is a Prison Lyrics 19 years ago
Benjammin and imightloseit summed it up perfectly so I'm gonna briefly combine their interpretations. He's having a moment of clarity where he sees the futility of his present surrounding... the trendy, well-off elitists carrying on meaningless conversations...the uptown crowd if you will. The drug reference (coke) is not necessarily about him, but the people around him. I imagine it's the drug of preference for those type of parties. Short high, come down, wanna regain high, take another bump. The cycle continues. This all contrasts with the fictionalized world of tv he saw last night. The true friendship, caring, real substance are all absent. Unfortunately, the thoughts disintegrate soon and he's back in the scene. The frustration peaks into another drink at the bar.

[He comes to pick her up for a night out. As he's about to approach the door,] she steps out onto the porch and just glows under the doorlight. Her beauty radiates so much it leaves him speechless and in 'awe.' Short, simple, sweet.

The last line "A baby sleeps in all our bones, so scared to be alone" followed by the piano playing is beyond beautiful. Great closer to a great album.
