Pavement – Cut Your Hair Lyrics 18 years ago
Also - second drummer drown part. Nastonovich, their second drummer, always used to take baths and talk on the telephone while doing so. Strange but true, from the biography. Malkmus thought it was funny, threw that random bit in this song.

Ambulance LTD – Anecdote Lyrics 19 years ago
i've just always focusing on the end lines, since i have little experience in cutting circulation to my hand or any of the other drug references. just a really fun song, and it gives me the idea of moving for some reason. as in a roadtrip song.

Say Anything – Alive with the Glory Of Love Lyrics 19 years ago
"wow...holocaust and love...AMAZING...imagine how hard a song like that is to write..this isn't a song that is just about any relationship between a boy and a girl. this is max being the best song writer in the entire world "

this isn't really even the best song about love and the holocaust, so it must not be that difficult. "holland, 1945" by neutral milk hotel is jeff magnum's love song to anne frank.

but anyway, i do like the song, very catchy. such a solid beginning, but i feel it falls apart a bit at the end.

Pretty Girls Make Graves – Bring It On Golden Pond Lyrics 19 years ago
here's how i imagine this song was written:
"Hey guys, how many guitar hooks can we cram into a single song simultaneously?"
"I don't know, but I would definetely scream over that."

it gives me goosebumps. the guitar work is phenomenal, the screaming is pure estrogen/testostrone, and the lyrics are simple. tight songwriting.

The PAper ChAse – Said The Spider To The Fly Lyrics 19 years ago
it is a good screaming song, to be painstakingly honest...

a solid song. i haven't heard much of their stuff (can't find the album anywhere), but i love this song.

Pavement – Elevate Me Later Lyrics 19 years ago
great song, but for some reason i like the early version "ell ess two" better. more lo-fi, better name...

Pavement – Frontwards Lyrics 19 years ago
"Well I've got style- miles and miles, so much style that it's wasted."

yeah, my favorite thing ever. i don't know why this never made it onto one of the albums.

Ugly Casanova – Barnacles Lyrics 19 years ago
"my light, it came up quick, call it your asterisk. buried boys, first book of the stars. saw it as a satellite... constant unblinking as... buried in the bottom of a brackish lake."

i love this part of the song. i like, absolutely love it. the kid's first book of the stars stuff is so damn nostalgiac for me.

The Streets – Fit But You Know It Lyrics 19 years ago
i like british slang. love it. and the cockney accent.

Beulah – Popular Mechanics For Lovers Lyrics 19 years ago

The Fiery Furnaces – Chris Michaels Lyrics 19 years ago
"Plume bloom bloom blaby bloom
Cheep cheep beep bee-bee beep."

coolest sounds to ever come from a mouth.

The Wrens – She Sends Kisses Lyrics 19 years ago
yeah, i like the narrative between this and ex-girl collection, and i like how charles writes in references to beth, with the hyphenated words:

"Charles, hold-me-downs"
" 'I'm-coming' sounds"
" 'just thought I'd' calls"
and then in ex-girl collection:
"she pours herself a don't-ask gin"
"I think it's tell-me time..."

i don't know what to call it, but its the most brilliant instrument of lyric writing i've ever seen.

Elliott Smith – Tomorrow Tomorrow Lyrics 19 years ago
Once again, he repeats his favorite alliteration "deaf and dumb and done." And there's obviously some personal meaning to the phrase that, sadly, we're never going to know. Retrospectively, I see most Elliott Smith songs predicting his own death. In this, I see him speaking in second person regarding himself. Death imagery as always: "drown tomorrow out". Self-abuse: "called your failures art." (Perhpas the line that most pointedly fingers Elliott referring to himself...who else would he refer to as a failure but himself?)

Broken Social Scene – Almost Crimes Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm seeing a pretty straightforward girl cheating on boy story here, but I can't connect all the lines. I'm not sure I ever will.

submissions
The New Pornographers – Chump Change Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is their best song, yet no comments? I'm not entirely sure what to make of it... anyone?

Neutral Milk Hotel – Communist Daughter Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't listen to Neutral Milk for the vague historical references. But its nice that those come standard.

Doves – M62 Song Lyrics 19 years ago
This is my drinking song. Yeah, not exactly a rousing tune, but it works for me. It fits, very haunting.

Tilly and the Wall – You and I Misbehaving Lyrics 19 years ago
Saw them with Bright Eyes a couple months ago, and the live performance just blew me away. Slightly less spectacular in studio, but that's okay because I like their songwriting, too.

Gotta love how it's written for the one guy's younger sister.

of Montreal – Tim I Wish You Were Born a Girl Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song. "And I could make you spaghetti with tomato sauce with just a touch of oregano and a parsley stem." On of the best deliveries of a line, ever. This is a great song to play for people who don't understand the indie scene, because it messes with their heads, and goddamn do i love doing that.

submissions
Pixies – Gigantic Lyrics 19 years ago
Nothign racist about it. But it's definetely about black men and their endowment... a fact i enjoy pointing out for people when i put this song on, just to freak them out.

submissions
Beulah – Gene Autry Lyrics 19 years ago
I've alway taken it as a song about suicide, and actually my favorite one at that (yes, more than Gloomy Sunday).

submissions
The Futureheads – Decent Days And Nights Lyrics 19 years ago
It doesn't have that many replies because the lyrics are... unspetacular, to be kind.

"This is a brand new problem
A problem without any clues
If you know the clues
It's easy to get through "

The fact that they overcome some horrible lyrics (come to think of it, it might be part of their sound, the plainness of the lyrics) makes the other facets of their songs that much more incredible.

The Faces – Ooh La La Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm glad Rod Stewart missed the initial recordings for this song, he would have ruined it with his raspy vocals.

submissions
The Strokes – What Ever Happened? Lyrics 19 years ago
Don't get me wrong, I love the Strokes, but their lyrics are pretty base. Not that much to discuss, they don't evoke emotional or philosophic response. Still great music.

Breaking Pangaea – Wedding Dress Lyrics 19 years ago
Fred writes love songs. That's all he does. And he's married... how the hell does a married man write love songs? I'm just bitter. He said their show over a year ago wouldn't be their last, even though by then he was a confirmed member of TBS. I say do the juggling act, man. You promised me, face to face, Fred.

Straylight Run – The Tension and the Terror Lyrics 19 years ago
this has always been my favorite Straylight song, since they released the 6 mp3s. and i like the original way i saw this line:

all of these awkwardjumpstartstalling conversations
mean much more to me than anything

i agree with whoever said its about falling in love with a really good friend, because basically that's how i relate to it. good stuff, i'm glad to see will didn't go to some crappy band after breaking pangaea. fred, however....

Archers of Loaf – Fat Lyrics 19 years ago
This is my favorite angry break-up song. It's mean-spirited and questions the very connection you've had with a person with disregard for lingering feelings. It tries to make it just as painful for the other person as it is for you.

Pavement – Cut Your Hair Lyrics 19 years ago
steve-o has the lyrics right

malkmus' take:
"It begins with me iimagining some girl bummed out on her boyfriend. 'What am I going to do?' she's asking herself. 'Cut my hair!' It could be anything, really- whatever you try to do to get a man or woman to like you. It nevers works. Someone's always got the upper hand. The it goes on to how the music world's the same, the way it concentrates on little outside things that seem cool, like your thrift-shop clothes or the amount of stubble you have on your chin. These are the things that seem to make one band different from the next- how long their hair is. It's not mt saying 'Get short hair!' I'm totally into long hair. I'd have it if I could, but it looks bad on me."

The Wrens – Happy Lyrics 19 years ago
My favorite Wrens song. The build-up of tension as his voice strains higher, and the eventual release in the three cleanest chords ever to end a song, is just a beautiful example of artistic control over the mood of the music.
