Joshua Radin – Closer Lyrics 15 years ago
Saw him live this summer and he told the crowd that this song is simply about how he always seems to fall for the "sad girl." He says he just can't help - a girl cries, and he's sold.

He said it isn't about anything specific, really.

Joshua Radin – These Photographs Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with Cuomo... Plath killed herself when she was 30. And the book that the quote is from, The Bell Jar, is a story about a girl (based loosely on herself) that was put into an insane asylum and given shock treatments... So while that quote implies cheerfulness when taken from its context, it's a truly a rather cynical remark.

Damien Rice – Accidental Babies Lyrics 15 years ago
This could be a couple of things...

It could be that the singer is reflecting on a relationship that recently ended, perhaps due to an affair, and he's asking his once-lover if her new relationship is everything theirs was. Damien (assuming the song is from his point of view) might be in a new relationship himself - hence "before -one of us- has accidental babies." It only takes one to permanantly end what they once had, and that the singer hopes to have again someday.

OR it's about a relationship that ended (perhaps still due to an affair?) and the two ex-lovers are now -having- an affair. The singer still loves her, but maybe she's just looking for sex. He's reflecting on their past relationship, wishing he could have it again, and she's busy asking him to cover it up so they don't get caught.

Daniel Johnston was kind of out of his mind... if you've seen The Devil and Daniel Johnston, you'd understand.

Bayside – Masterpiece Lyrics 17 years ago
Where the lyrics posted here say "Our failures lay down but just accept yourself" Anthony actually says, "All failures and bad breaks; just accept yourself." It's a continuation of the line before.

Great song though.

Bayside – Baby Britain Lyrics 17 years ago
It's not often that Elliott can be covered and the cover is equally as catchy... Bayside did well. Kind of a new feel of the song. Elliott's voice is always so lazy and relaxed, but Anthony does something different.

I love Anthony's voice, he has soooo much control over his voice.

Bayside – Devotion and Desire Lyrics 17 years ago
There's quite a few minor errors in the lyrics... Most of them are insignificant, but if you were wondering...

Anyway, great song.

Radiohead – 2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm) Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh, P.S. this song's also about the 2000 Bush election - Thom seems to think Bush cheated the election, thus, Hail To The Thief. It ties in both ways. Kind of an anti-government song in general. Brilliant.

Oh. Fun musical fact: It starts out in 7/8 and goes to 4/4 about midway... you can hear it in the drums if you listen closely; my musically uneducated older brother thought the CD skipped. :]

Radiohead – 2 + 2 = 5 (The Lukewarm) Lyrics 17 years ago
2+2=5 is a perfect connection to the book 1984 because of the album title: Hail To The Thief. "Hail to he who has stolen our freedom, rights, and memories." This thief would be Big Brother, the totalitarian leader of the country in which Winston, the main character, lives... "2 +2 = 5" is something the government tells the people, and they believe it, even though they know very well that this is incorrect; what the government says, is. No questions asked. Also, the lyrics correspond nearly perfectly with the book and its plot and characters:

Are you such a dreamer (Winston, main character, dreams of rebelling against the government)
To put the world to rights? (Winston rebels against the government in an attempt to set things right)
I stay home forever ("I" could mean anyone else in the world in the setting of the novel - no one ventures out of their "houses", they just stay in line and do what they're told and believe anything that is dished out to them)
Where two and two always makes a five (no one questions what the government tells them; the whole line would translate as "I'm not going to rebel against the government; I just devour any information they give me, right or wrong)

January has April's showers (another example of something that the government in the setting of 1984 would tell the people, even though they know it's not true)
And two and two always makes a five (obvious)

It's the devil's way now (the devil would be Big Brother, the totalitarian leader of Oceania, where Winston lives)
There is no way out (the government controls all, there's no escaping it)
You can scream and you can shout (Winston is imprisoned and tortured for rebelling. He screams and shouts, but the torture persists)
It is too late now (Winston has already committed the "crime" of rebellion - it's too late now)

Everything fits... it makes much more sense if you've read the novel... my descriptions are vague... if you've read the book, they make sense.

Hail To The Thief corresponds well with the novel in general.

Bright Eyes – June on the West Coast Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is wonderful.

I suffer from depression, and this song... he describes the way I've felt for so long now perfectly. Like... I could not have said it better:
"Sorrow gets too heavy, and joy, it tends to hold you with the fear that it eventually departs."
"All those months, I just wanted to sleep."
"And the truth is, I've been dreaming of some tired, tranquil place, where the weather won't get trapped inside my bones." - the weather (rain in particular) is a HUGE factor is depression... at least for me.
"I felt I was on fire with the things I could have told you, I just assumed you eventually would ask, and I wouldn't have to bring up my so badly broken heart." - In every new relationship, I hope more than anything that the guy will ask me instead of me having to bring it up.

Conor is so incredible with his poetry. He connects to everyone some how.

Cake – Jolene Lyrics 17 years ago
Also, in the other song Jolene, more of the lyrics are:

I had to have this talk with you; my happiness depends on you, and whatever you decide to do, Jolene. While you could have your choice of men, I could never love again; he's the only one for me, Jolene.

So obviously the singer confronted Jolene at some point...

Cake – Jolene Lyrics 17 years ago
Jolene is an interesting name to have chosen for this song... if you've ever heard the song Jolene by Dolly Parton or redone by The White Stripes, the lyrics are:

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, I'm begging of you, please don't take my man. Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, please don't take him just because you can. Your beauty is beyond compare with flaming locks of auburn hair, and ivory skin, and eyes of emerald green.

and the song goes on to describe her and how she's stealing the poor songwriter's man. I may be wrong, but it almost, in a way, sounds like he's singing about having an affair with her, and then she realizes that it's wrong, and leaves.

But I might just be comparing too much to the other song. Not sure.

Bright Eyes – The Calendar Hung Itself . . . Lyrics 18 years ago
Now this is a song that can only be truly appriciated by an educated and devoted Bright Eyes fan - it is not a song that would easily attract new listeners. I love this song. It's so full of energy... you can tell the kind of mood he was in when he wrote it. I think this song is probably a reference to the girl he sings about in Messenger Bird's Song... in that song he talks about having compared all of his recent lover's to this one girl that he's singing to, and all of them failed. The first verse says to me "Are you happier with someone else? Does he know you the way I did, does he love you the way I do?" Then he says "I drug your ghost across the country". This could also be a reference to Messenger Bird, because he's saying he's been everywhere trying to get over her, but he takes her ghost with him. Then "I was determined in Chicago, but I dug my teeth into my knees, and I settled for a telephone, sang into your machine, you are my suinshine, etc." He still loves her. Then he kisses another girl (as for the broken jaw reference, I'm not sure what that means) and he says "She had eyes bright enough to burn me, they reminded me of yours" - again compaining a new lover to his old one.

It is a masterpiece - magnificence in its purest form.

Anyway, I hope my analysis of the song did something for you. It makes me sense to me when I think about it that way.

Home Town Hero – Bleeds In Blue Lyrics 19 years ago
Interesting way of interprating that, So Impossible. I see it as more of, "Hey, I know I did what I did for a reason, (and even though it hurts a little) I don't regret it." As for the "even a little lullabye can start with burning eyes" I think he's saying like, "Even the good things hurt." I dont know, thats just me.

what an absolutely gorgeous song. jeffs lazy, laid back voice is perfect for the whole "im a depressed drunk" mood he sets in this song. love it. as to the reference to the bandaid, i think the interpertaions here are very nice, and fairly acurate. :)

Toadies – Possum Kingdom Lyrics 19 years ago
Ok, sorry to post again, but I'm just now reading all the posts on this song. NOT about vampires, ok? Todd's better than that, we all know this. Wangflop - you're right on. You have to think about this from a cerial killer point of veiw: If you were trying to rape and kill someone, what would you tell them? Of course, you would tell them that everything is going to be ok, im not going to hurt you, i just want to have sex with you. You would ask nicely to begin with ("make up your mind, to walk around the lake with me tonight" with the lake symbolizing sex.)Then when they refuse, what do you do? You get angry, of course. This is where Todd comes in with "Give it up to me" and "Do you want to die?" He was planning to kill her all along, but at this point he's upset and is letting her know what's really going on: have sex with me or I kill you (even though i was going to kill you anyways). Ok, I'm done, sorry sorry.

Toadies – Possum Kingdom Lyrics 19 years ago
Whether Todd said it was about vampirism or not, (and Idon't think he did, I have reason to believe its's about rape and murder) it's a great song. The Toadies come from Texas themselves, around Dallas, and this song and the song Tyler (Tyler is a city in Texas near Dallas) are about a cerial murderer/rapist who stalked that area. I think the Toadies are better than writing songs about vampires.
_________________________________________________

This song is pretty straight forward I think, though I don't think he wants to drown her and keep her body, I think he wants to rape her and force her to marry him and kind of keep her in a sort of "prison" by making her be with him. When she refuses, Todd comes in with "Do you want to die?" This song very cleverly disguises the rape and murder intentions upon first listening. Excellent song. Toadies are awesome.

Toadies – Tyler Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that it is extremely likely for this song to be based on the stalking case in Tyler, Texas, as the Toadies come from Texas themselves. It's an awesome song, though it is a little disturbing. I think what's happening is he's stalking a girl then ends up raping her in the end. Very disturbing, but you gotta love the Toadies...
