I just think these lines sound a bit rude. like "oh, please, forgive me, I'm fucked up and I've cheated, but smile so I'll know you're still here for me." Sounds to me like a not-so-healthy realtionship where one person demands the other to feel and act in a way that makes only one of them happy. |

this song is one of my favourite beatles songs. when i heard it i decided to learn how to play the guitar just to be able to play this song, at that time to it seemed to be extremley difficult to play. so i made this song my goal, but (sadly) i learnt to play it two weeks later, so i never really got into playing the guitar after that. i guess i was a bit dissappointed by learning that what i thought would be the most complex song ever written, really was quite simple and unexciting. i still love listening to it, though. |

the "he" in the song is the same person as the "me", i think. 'he' is who he's become, and me is the inner person watching the physical changes.
i think "i'm taking the cure so i can be quiet
whenever i want " means that he does his drugs so that he can forget, or ignore, the person he is on the inside. quiet whenever i want = shut out his inner emotions and his inner voice using drugs. |

i think he's singing about someone doing drugs and not really knowing why.

trying hard to become whatever they are"
this someone is just doing what he thought was the right way to go, as everyone else did it. but elliott is trying to tell him that tthey all has to go down the same single file road.
"if your choking up take this paper cup"
i think might refer to the physical illness that comes from getting off heroin, so instead of staying clean he starts drinking. |

i really like the part "how come you're not ashamed of what you are?". at the same time he's saying that he hates this person, but also that he is somehow ashamed over who he is, wondering how it comes that this horrible person thinks he's a good person, while elliott can't accept himself. |

cant see why so few people have commented on this song, which i think is really good. im not to keen on the saxophone-thing, though.
i think its about this person who obviously has a drug problem, and he sort of takes care of this person even though he doesnt seem to get anything out of it. he's a friend to this person, even though he or she havn't looked upon him that way before.
or is he singing about himself? the microphone-part in the end goes quite well together with his being-drunk-on-stage-rumor, and in the beginning he hear himself talking about not knownig how much coke he did, wishing that he'd take care of himself. that he'd see himself as his own friend instead of being filled with self-hatred. |

this might not be my personal favourite, but it's still maybe one of the best songs ever written.
i read the lyrics a lot before i ever heard the song, and they really work as poetry. reminds me a lot of poetry-slam kinda stuff, the rythm is just perfect, and he doesnt seem to have made any effort to make the words right, or come up with something. it all just makes sense and fits perfectly.
and what the father says is sooo sweet, if it's based on a true story i really hope thats what he said, cause everyone in that situation needs to hear something like that. |

as this is said to be written during his "meeting" with nyc, it could be abut coming to a new place, not knowing anyone, and wheather you like it or not ending up with people who remind you of your past self, and also people who doesnt seem to really care about you. like the "my own best friend"-part.
to me, the first parts of the song seem to be about this new group of people and a new girl, from whom he'll eventually split. he's been through all this stuff, and being with this new girl just reminds him of past problems. so even if he might want to help her, he ends up leaving because he cant deal with his own past.
the painting-eyes-black part could also refer to all punks, emos and other generally depressed kids using lots of black eye-paint. and the person going into the bathroom either does drugs or has some kind of eating disorder, which he can relate to. |

i laugh every time i hear this song, becaus it sounds so unbelieveibly crappy, and sweet at the same time. havent thought too much about the lyricsm, but the song itself just sound like a bands very first recording ever. way out of tune, but still just great |
