I think this song is written from the perspective of a tiny Kevin Barnes inside the Georgie Fruit persona. Make sense?

Nickelback – Rockstar Lyrics 16 years ago
You guys are all so very disgusting. SoggyJohnson -- you can't talk about banality if you're watching Leno, dumbass.

You douchebags talk as if being a "real metalhead" is something to be proud of. Being a fan of terrible underground music is just as lame as being a fan of terrible mainstream music. Nickelback is probably on par with all of the terrible shit you listen to.

Elliott Smith – Fake It Through the Day (Miss Misery, early version) Lyrics 16 years ago
"Crappy"? This makes me want to drive to whichever hole you're currently inhabiting and cut your face off, "nighstars." This version is absolutely incredible.

Bon Iver – RE: Stacks Lyrics 16 years ago
Something about this part really gets me:

There's a black crow sitting across from me; his wiry legs are crossed
And he's dangling my keys he even fakes a toss
Whatever could it be
That has brought me to this loss?

Very lovely lyrics and imagery in this song.

Love this one. Thanks to whoever-you-are for getting these lyrics up so quickly.

Joanna Newsom – Colleen Lyrics 16 years ago
I love, love, love this song. This part, in particular, is great:

And I hate the sight of that empty air,
like stepping for a missing stair
and falling forth forever blindly:
cannot grab hold of anything! No,
Not I, most blessed among Colleens.

I love that she actually took the time to consider what it might mean for a creature of the sea to be on land -- empty air, like stepping for a missing stair. Beautiful.

Joanna Newsom – Emily Lyrics 16 years ago
Two things: I think the meteorite/meteor/meteoroid thing is a true mistake -- not done on purpose. I know some have romanticized it by saying that she purposely got it wrong, but that would have defeated the whole point of "put[ting] it to verse so that I'd always remember." It wouldn't rhyme.

Also, what is that instrument being played at the 9:45 mark? It sounds like a spring: boing boing.

Jens Lekman – Kanske Är Jag Kär I Dig Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song, too. Any idea whether he actually uses that phrase in the song (in the line that I followed with a question mark)?

CocoRosie – Miracle Lyrics 16 years ago
Am I an idiot for thinking that Antony Hegarty contributed vocals for this song? That songs a lot like him to me, although airier than usual. Any help?

P.S. I love this motherfucking song.

CocoRosie – Werewolf Lyrics 16 years ago
"He's a black magic wielder some say a witch
Wielded darkness when he was wilein on his mom's
And born child and he was the bastard that broke
Up the marriage evil doer doing evil from a baby carriage"

Anybody want to fit this part into their interpretations? I'm never as good as this as I wish I was. Seems to me that this refers to a kid born out of wedlock, possibly son to the cheating father. Am I way off?

Sunset Rubdown – Trumpet, Trumpet, Toot! Toot! Lyrics 16 years ago
Sorry for the double post, but I think "abandon" might be the correct lyric, although "panic" makes more sense to me. Aside from that, the above lyrics appear accurate.

Sunset Rubdown – Trumpet, Trumpet, Toot! Toot! Lyrics 16 years ago
These are the correct lyrics:

We gotta memorize our lines, and Brother Thespian we'll be fine
Whoa oh oh oh oh
You gotta refine your breath and beats with a graduation pen—use mine.
Whoa oh oh oh oh
Stage left, enter Maggie looking hurried, she has a parcel in her arms
Whoa oh oh oh oh
Were you the leopard, or the virgin, or the child in the grown man's beard all out of place and hanging off his face by the time the audience cheers?

And you were feeling pretty cocky on the day you became an actor.
I know the thing I shouldn't say, so I’ll leave it at this: I hope you get what you're after.
And if when you're out you see the hundredth house fall from the sky
Another stick-flat thing in the ground.
Say a heartfelt prayer for your safe arrival

I'd like to think the actors never panic.
I'd like to throw this trumpet down and go empty-handed.
Part of the virgin has been taken,
So let me throw this trumpet down and go empty handed, oh.
If you're the virgin, then I'm the stand-in.

And I'd like to think the actors never panic
And I'd like to throw this trumpet down and go empty-handed.
And I'd like to think the actors never panic
And I'd like to throw this trumpet down and go empty-handed.

"When you wanted me your heart was (?)" should actually be "When you wanna be a harvester of light," I think.

Sunset Rubdown – Winged/Wicked Things Lyrics 16 years ago
Hey, Sunset Rubdown (good user name!), I think you may be right. Much of RSL seems to deal with the creative process (or with performing, etc.), and I wouldn't be surprised if he's referencing this song later on in the album.

submissions
Sunset Rubdown – Up on Your Leopard, Upon the End of Your Feral Days Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that, towards the end, the line should still be "a leather made soft" as opposed to "a lover made soft."

submissions
Sunset Rubdown – I’m Sorry I Sang on Your Hands That Have Been in the Grave Lyrics 16 years ago
Possible correction: I think that

There are ones that lie
And ones that lie underground
The first ones lie;
The second one I lie about.

Should actually be

There are ones that lie
And ones that lie underground
The first one's mine;
The second one I lie about.

The difference being "the first one's mine." I can't remember where I read it, but somebody had said very matter-of-factly that this was a song about somebody being murdered. If that's the case, my corrected line makes sense. Those that lie would be "mine" (his), meaning he lies. The second one I lie about would be those that lie underground -- the person he killed. He lies about it.

Probably my favorite song on this great album. I'm sure the "west coast air" lyric is off here, but I have no idea what he actually says, so I can't correct it.

Okkervil River – Black Lyrics 16 years ago
You're wrong, blahblahblahBatman. Your rationale really doesn't make sense, either. Couldn't that line just as easily support the most likely theory (molestation)? The "door" is symbolic of trust, etc. It was open; now it's closed. Her naivety and innocence is gone.

Midlake – Young Bride Lyrics 16 years ago
Anybody else irked by the improper grammar.

"Why are your shoulders like that of a tired old woman"

It should be "THOSE of a tired, old woman." Same goes for the next part.

The "I hate Eva" crowd here is really ridiculous. Hey guys? You don't know Eva. And to the wife who was cheated on by her husband -- uh, blame him. It's not pseudo-Eva's fault, so get over it.

I really, really love this song. I think it deserves to be on a much less obscure release.

I'm fairly sure I messed up the beginning (I think Leal is a theater somewhere, for what it's worth). Also, he might say "Just a face for a name" instead of "or a name."

Anyway, awesome, weird song. I like it a lot.

Question -- during the "Dirty old shadow, stay away, don't play your games with me" part, I'm always reminded of a song I've heard, but I have on idea what. I think it might be a Beatles song. It's not the lyrics that remind me as much as the melody and such. Any ideas?

Jens Lekman – It Was a Strange Time in My Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I hope the lyrics are ok. This is possibly my favorite song off of the new album (Kanske Ar Jag Kar I Dig gives it a run for its money, though).

I especially love the verse starting with "People seem to think a shy personality equals gifted." So awesome.

First of all, Rufus T. Firefly = moron.

Now that that's out of the way, check out what some guy named Bradford (from the band Deerhunter) had to say in his blog:

"I always wanted to start a feud with Kevin Barnes from of Montreal. This started with the now-imfamous dis song he wrote about my good friend / sometimes 'girlfriend' Eva ("Bunny Aint No Kind of Rider") My plan was to beat him up or at least shank him on stage. I saw him everywhere over the course of the weekend and kind of snarrled at him from across the catering table. He was walking around in the middle of the day wearing blue glitter eyemakeup and asspants. Long story short: we were driving away at the end of the night sunday, and i saw him being interviewed by the pitchfork dudes on video. I ran up and grabbed the mic (thinking i was going to humiliate him on a small level, and look all badass) and asked him 'Why are you such a pretentious fucktard?' and he looks at me and says really saddly 'Because I havent figured it out yet...'
I walked away feeling like such a fucking asshole. I got served. I told the guys in the van to hold up and ran back over to him after he was interviewed and apologized and explained my feudconcept. He was really cool and nice. Then he came and hung out with us for the rest of the night."

The song scares me, too. I made a "Saddest Of" mix for Elliott Smith and threw this at the end to listen to while I slept. When this popped up (I happened to be awake) it creeped the hell out of me.

Elliott Smith – Between the Bars Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of those songs where I misinterpreted a lyric, but I like my interpretation better.

I always thought he said "They push and shove and walk into your will" instead of "They push and shove and won't bend to your will."

I liked the idea of people in your life "walking into your will." I mean "will" as in "that thing you write before you die." Sort of morbid, but really great.

Amazing song. Everybody knows the meaning, so I won't focus on that. I do want to say, though, that the last verse of this song is some of the best songwriting I've ever heard in my life. Amazing.

I loooove this song. In particular:

"You left a mark, you sunk your teeth

Oh, let’s not pretend I needed the lesson
That you taught me well"

Perfect.

I'm so glad somebody posted these lyrics! I could only figure out bits and pieces (from which I figured out the general story of the song, but not the details).

I'm not going to go too deep into the lyrics (fairly self-explanatory), but I have to say that this is among the best songs Joanna Newsom has ever released. I love it, and the little "yelp" between verses is tremendous.

Sofia -- that was stupid. Shut up. Whether or not it offends your oh-so-delicate sensibilities, believe it or not, many people's mothers made them dinner. Moreso than their fathers, even! It's a sick, sick world we live in, I know.

Modest Mouse – Spitting Venom Lyrics 17 years ago
You guys are starting to piss me off with all this "Isaac Brock doesn't write love songs or breakup songs" bullshit. Shut up. If any of you dumbasses actually listened to the music instead of trying to figure how to tie drugs and religion into every fucking song maybe you'd realize he's written plenty of songs that dealt with relationships. Just because you're all too insecure and immature to listen to a "love song" or a "break-up song" doesn't mean Brock is, too.

Break-up song =/= emo. It just doesn't work that way.

submissions
Wolf Parade – Dinner Bells Lyrics 18 years ago
You guys have things a little backwards. It was Dan's mother who died, and Dan who said that if he had written it alone, it would have been a concept album about living in the woods. Because this is Spencer's track, I doubt it has anything to do with anybody's mother dying, although that does seem to be a really good interpretation.

Elliott Smith – Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands Lyrics 18 years ago
Everybody is always so quick to link every song Smith's ever written to drugs. Wow, the word "chemical" is in the song. Must be about drugs! Forget about the context of the line, or the rest of the song.

Jeez...

of Montreal – Art Snob Solutions Lyrics 18 years ago
...yeah, that's sort of the point. Way to go.

Anyway, really cool song. I suppose that it's a comment on the sort of hipster-type people who would like to see anybody who disagrees with them on the subject of what makes an artist/band/whatever "good" burned at the stake.

Lots of good stuff here. I think that what\'s-his-face was right when he suggested that maybe it was a dance at a wedding as opposed to prom, but a lot of the other stuff seemed to be spot on. To me, there isn\'t too much to break down in this song, as the lyrics tend to speak for themselves.

One note: I was always under the impression that he said \"And it\'s hard being you and me, and it\'s harder as anything else.\" I\'ve always preferred that to \"It\'s hard to be a human being.\"
