Frank Zappa – Why Does It Hurt When I Pee? Lyrics 15 years ago
This is probably just a weird coincidence, but for several years FZ had urinary troubles that he sought medical treatment for and were undiagnosed for quite some time before they told him he had prostate cancer. So maybe those urinary troubles had something to do with the song?

The Byrds – Citizen Kane Lyrics 15 years ago
This is in the Edie Sedgewick movie Ciao, Manhattan and is rumoured to have been written for it. The scene in which it's played and context of the lyrics seems to add to this rumour. I think it's a reflection on the drug abuse and excess in Hollywood, and how it was a perpetual circle, not something that the hippies and heads of the Byrds era created. It's a great song to boot.

The Format – For You Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this, like much of Springsteen's early and overly wordy writing, is less about a specific meaning and a story behind the song as it is about a strong series of visual images used to convey a particular feeling when those images hit you. And it works well, you can see each stanza as it's own image, but the feeling of all three is the same and hits you in the same way. It's a brilliant song, and this is a particularly fine cover that The Format do especially well.

Jason Isbell – Brand New Kind of Actress Lyrics 16 years ago
It's obviously a comment on or about the Phil Spector/Lana Clarkson shooting. I think it's carried well and showing Clarkson's point of voice works nicely for this song. It carries a similar feel and sound to what he did in DBT, but with much more of his personality.

Warren Zevon – Don't Let Us Get Sick Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song. I love that it's about everybody's hopes and fears and just wanting everything to be okay. We can all relate, but it's still intensely personal.

Butch Walker – #1 Summer Jam Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I agree that it's definitely about losing your virginity. Thinking that you're the coolest guy ever, and finding out that you don't know much and are terrible at having sex.

That's definitely Cruel To Be Kind. Butch is a huge Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe fan. He's even got an Elvis Costello tattoo. (and an Elvis Presley too!!)

Modest Mouse – Bankrupt on Selling Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, it's about watching somebody he loved and who was everything to him destroy their personal self and who they were to fit in and be popular, and how he has to leave her behind and go do what he has to do.

The Meg And Dia Band – Just One Of Those Things Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think it's about a gay man at all. I think it's for a guy who didn't fit in with her friends or didn't feel like he fit in with her and her friends, and tried and failed, and even though she loved him, she has to let him go rather than see him ruin himself by trying to copy somebody. (Maybe it's about a drunk or a drug addict losing a lover before he descends into addiction.)

Dwight Yoakam – Sorry You Asked? Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the meaning of this song is all on the surface, but it sure it catchy. He's just basically telling somebody who asked where his girlfriend was exactly what happened, in detail. I think everybody's either done this or had a friend do the exact same thing to them. It's just a fantastic break-up song.

Kill Creek – Dirty Hands Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song. It's a great way to state the feelings that come after a relationship ends. Who hasn't felt this way at the end? It's mix of resentment and the feelings of "I just need to talk to you, and hear your voice." and "I understand why you left, and I don't care."

I assume the "Brand new friends" line has something to do with a new boyfriend maybe, and for sure the people that have helped convince her that he was totally wrong for her and that somebody else is the answer.

Eels – Jeannie's Diary Lyrics 18 years ago
I totally posted my previous comment on the wrong song. It was for another Eels song. I apologize for the mistake.

Uncle Tupelo – New Madrid Lyrics 18 years ago
There's an actual town of New Madrid in Missouri as well. I spent a great deal of time there as a child, and this song conjures up memories of all kinds of greatnesses from my past. That's why this song holds a paticular meaning for me far beyond the lyrical meaning.

Eels – Jeannie's Diary Lyrics 18 years ago
For what it's worth, this is a cover version. It was orignally written by The Hollies. I really like this version though. It makes it easy to be wistful, which is a wonderful thing.

Eels – Whatever Happened to Soy Bomb Lyrics 18 years ago
This songs speaks volumes about how I feel right now. Soy Bomb was the name of a band I was in when I was 14/15 (early to mid 1998), so the line about "Whatever happened to Soy Bomb?" Has paticular meaning for me beyond the standard meaning.

The Monkees – Porpoise Song (Theme from Head) Lyrics 19 years ago
This was't written by The Monkees, so I have my doubts as to it's lyrics referencing Micky's stint on the Circus Boy television show. It was written by the Gerry Goffin/Carol King partnership. It was, however, written specifically for the movie "Head", one of the few that actually were. Most of what was in the movie was from previous sessions, and most of what was written for the movie was used later on, on other albums.

Jon Brion – Knock Yourself Out Lyrics 19 years ago
I like this song a lot. I thought it was very fitting on the "Raymond" retrospective.

The New Amsterdams – Poison In The Ink Lyrics 19 years ago
I think that it's obvious that this if about the critics, and the people that downtalk the greatness of Matt Pryor's work with The Get Up Kids and The New Amsterdams. He's saying that the words hurt, but he's not changing for anybody, because he writes songs for himself, and not the critics.
