Lenny Kravitz – Thinking Of You Lyrics 15 years ago
I always thought this was a song about an ex-lover (Bonet, maybe?). It never crossed my mind that he quite literally meant his mother. The allusions to our conception of heaven are great; kudos to this one!

Marvin Gaye – Let's Get It On Lyrics 16 years ago

Dr. John – Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya Lyrics 17 years ago
i think the second line is:

"got my satchel of gris-gris in my hand"

i never knew what gris-gris was until my cousin (who graduated from grambling in new orleans) let me know it referred to voodoo fetishes, dolls, herbs, etc.

i love this song, and dr. john.

Lauryn Hill – Doo Wop (That Thing) Lyrics 18 years ago
lyric correction: "A Muslim sleeping with the jinn"

jinns are evil spirits in Muslim/Arab folklore. the lyric is akin to sayig somebody's sleeping with the devil.

i love this song. the imagery is is so vivid and convictng.

Lauryn Hill – Tell Him Lyrics 18 years ago
i feel that this song is about making an appeal to God to make sure the man she's in love with knows it and to bless the love.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – May This Be Love Lyrics 18 years ago
also, in response to bodester (and i just realized how far apart those posts above are . . . a yearlong fight w/3 posts . . . LOL), was hendrix really a lazy-minded fool when over the course of three studio albums he absolutely changed the music world and you (to my knowledge) have not done the same in your lifetime of work?

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – May This Be Love Lyrics 18 years ago
whether jimi wrote this about drugs or not, this is one of the most pure love songs out there, imho. the lyrics are short and don't try to take the metaphor too far. the music itself is . . . jimi effing hendrix. it's beautiful. sometimes i go to sleep to this song, i put the song on repeat and just drift off to this wonderful piece of rock artistry.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Fire Lyrics 18 years ago
idk, i guess jimi's talking to a chick. he's trying to get at her, but she doesn't want to hear it. she gives him all these excuses, but he lets her know that he just wants to *ahem, you know*. he's letting her know its ok . . . "you wont' get burned" - vd, "you try to give me your money . . . save it for your rainy day" - he's not a whore or anything, he just wants what he wants.

Common – The 6th Sense Lyrics 18 years ago
Common = the truth. This song is to me a reminder to stay true and real. Of course, real doesn't equal gangbanging or drug dealing. It's all about being nonjudgemental and accountable.

Common – Come Close Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song, even though many slept Electric Circus. I know he kinda wrote this for Badu, so is the second line ("Are your eyes still green, girl?") a reference to her or to the jealousy he mentions a couple of lines later?

Common – The Light Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the song that got me hooked on the album that got me hooked on Com, I love its organic feel and the true expression of love. It's neither saccharine nor cold, but it's TRUE. "You know I ain't the type to walk around with matchin shirts
If relationship is effort I will match your work" I love it.

CeeLo Green – Closet Freak Lyrics 18 years ago
shoudn't "those who ain't yet" be "those who ain't shit"? This is a good song, if you ask me. I love the vibe and the ideas of being/expressing yourself . . . in all forms of the word "freak" too bad the rest of the album was only OK.

Memphis Bleek – Dear Summer Lyrics 18 years ago
There's been a lot of talk about this being Jay-z's farewell to the rap game. It kinda makes sense, with the lyrics and the fact that this song is on his protege, Memphis Bleek's album. It's sort of a changing of the guard or something.

Norah Jones – I've Got To See You Again Lyrics 18 years ago
I've personally always gotten a feeling that this song is about a female stripper. It kind of has a forbidden, lustful, feel to it. Whatever it's about, I absolutely love the song. I first listened to it waiting for my bf alone in the car at night, which just sent chills down my spine!
