i agree with you sludgegarden13.

i think the "dog" represents the real father. the stalker is jealous and hates the seed in side her.

Bob Dylan – When I Paint My Masterpiece Lyrics 13 years ago
i know this is months later and you may never see it but i really agree with your take on this classic and one of my personal favorites of both bob's and the band's cover.

maybe not so much about specifically doing drugs through europe (although it certainly fits no doubt in bob's biography at that point in his life as well as in the lyrics themselves) but in a general sense as well. you are very right i think that it is almost like a has been or a a never was preaching to no one in particular about how it will all be good in a bit...

cheers

it maybe (in fact probably is) about drugs, but seriously juffman this song came out in like 1972 or something...i dont think crack cocaine has anything to do with this song at all.

yeah JLK recorded this song multiple times for various labels and depending on which version you pick the lyrics and the "me"/"you" changes.

Pixies – The Holiday Song Lyrics 14 years ago
my two cents:

like alot of his songs there is biblical/religious undertones, however i dont think incest is the case. been a pixies fan for a very long time and from what i've read about charles he came from a pretty overzealous religious family (family approved records consisting of Peter Paul and Mary /Larry Norman etc...)

i think this just him in mid masturbation thinking about the consequences of his sinning. he was told by a preacher or his father or mother or whoever that wicked boys have sex with their 'sisters' (not actual sisters but females) or they perform sexual acts (masturbation) and also are involved with deviant behaviour like smoking marijuana (rolled her up in grass and trees) and ultimately the wages of sin is death "they kissed til they were dead".

but alas despite all the warnings "here he is with his hand..."

bottomline just think its a very well written reflection about growing up feeling weird about your sexuality vs your religious upbringing and who knows "this aint know holiday" could refer to a bible camp or something where he is actually performing the masturbation.

The Velvet Underground – I'm Set Free Lyrics 15 years ago
i think the song is about perhaps not a full "recovery" but more like a moment of clarity between fixes. he looks back at his experiences and now finds himself at the juncture wehere he can get more drugs or remain sober to find a new illusion...he's set free to do what he wants

Butthole Surfers – The Lord Is a Monkey Lyrics 15 years ago
i give you kudos for attempting to put these lyrics together! FYI the line she you have as 'she was selling Good as God had her funky assed hair' should read:

'she was selling Gil Scott, had his funky ass hair'

Gil Scott Heron was a poet/political activist/musician in the 60s and 70s that was big on the Black Power movement and had a famous poem/song called "the revolution will not be televised"...

Beck – The Golden Age Lyrics 15 years ago
i like everyone's opinion about this song, but i feel perhaps that we may be "reaching" a bit with our interpretations. imho i think that the song is quite literally about going from adolescence to adulthood and we all know that the biggest marker of becomming an adult is getting your license to drive!

i think "the golden age" which is about to start is the singers young adulthood which is about to begin. the road ahead is dark and potentially disappointing but for the moment the future is unknown so hop in the car and go for the ride... :)

The Flaming Lips – Jesus Shootin' Heroin Lyrics 15 years ago
i can see where Cynothoglys is coming from with that, but i see it differently.
having studied wayne's lyrics quite a bit (and under various influences ;) ) i think that the song title and the line "jesus shooting heroin" is just a play on the famous quote "religion is the opiate of the masses".

the first verses he states right away that he is impartial to religion and doesnt know much about it cept for war and such. i think all the messed up stuff that follows in the lyrics are all "eased" because of religion. ie...this shits really messed up here, better go to church and it will be ok...wont it?

Canned Heat – Time Was Lyrics 15 years ago
i agree taylor! basically alan telling a tale of how a romance grew sour and for better or for worse nothing he does is right any more. he's staying true to himself though so she can love it or leave it. he's got time...things will work out fine.

Canned Heat – London Blues Lyrics 15 years ago
huge canned heat fan, especially the true lineup with Alan Wilson. this song is quite literal no doubt about it. alan was a very introverted guy and was never successful with the ladies. this song is about a girl/groupie that flirted with him last time the heat played in london so after building the courage up he decides to try and take her out when the come through a second time. turns out she was just toying with him despite the fact that he is spending money and time trying to win her. she doesnt even come to the show as she promised so she can go straight to hell...

alan wilson is a blues genius...i strongly recommend that fans read "Blind Owl Blues" for more info about his life and music...

RIP blind owl

The Gun Club – Mother of Earth Lyrics 15 years ago
shame no one's heard of these guys...jlp was a genius in his own twisted beautiful way.

the song is pretty fitting to me especially as it is the last track on the Miami album. i think the singer (JLP) is at the end of his journey. he's a traveling dude, moving from town to town and he knows first hand the seedy underbelly of Americana for better or worse. hes been along the highways and the seediest motels along the interstates. the song is more or less an epitaph to the album itself. the album is filled with songs about an America that is tucked away and unnoticed (intentionally?) by the mainstream. the singer is lamenting that all the efforts to bring attention their way has come to nothing. lonely people on the lonely road mean nothing in the greater scheme of things so its time to ride off into the western sunset...

RIP JLP

Leonard Cohen – Tonight Will Be Fine Lyrics 15 years ago
thompson's version is incredible i agree! i somewhat agree with floodline but somehow i think that they are already broken up when he sings this song and he regrets. i think this is kinda a self pity song; he's basically saying why did i leave her?

in the first verses he is describing how originally they loved each other and it was all dandy. she went on loving him and he stopped loving her and "now i am too thin and your love is vast" she found someone new and he is alone.

i think the second verses emphasize this thought. emotionally he is very reserved and he has a hard time exposing his feelings. the room he chose for himself is small with little access "windows" to the outside world. 'there is only one bed' and 'only one prayer' in the room' is an admittance of his selfishness in general and particular when they were together. he wishes he hadnt fouled things up and hopefully waits for her to somehow come back to him.

the last verses are just beautiful flashbacks of making love with her and a final bittersweet statement that if memories are all he has then that they are better than nothing.

i've read alot of cohen's works not only his song lyrics, and by his own admission sex is a heavy underlying theme in the majority of his writing. i think that the chorus is more or less the singer masturbating either physically or mentally fantasizing and feeding off of those memories to do so, her "eyes" and "smile" .

Leonard Cohen – Story of Isaac Lyrics 15 years ago
i somewhat agree with everyone here. i would emphasize that in comparing the 'story of isaac' to world leaders who send younger generations to war, cohen is coming out and saying that "a scheme is not a vision" and "you were not tempted by a demon or god". the abraham truly loves his son and would only think of sacrificing him due to the call of a higher power whereas the worldleaders see the youth as pawns to be manipulated and used. great song!

Leonard Cohen – The Traitor Lyrics 15 years ago
i agree with both of you. this is one of my favorite cohen songs. i would also add that the judges like his "mother" know that she is not right for him but he is so lustful that he ignores the warnings though he knows they are right... ultimately making him a traitor in their eyes and to himself.

Bob Dylan – I and I Lyrics 15 years ago
i love this song and think about its meaning often...

1. as others have mentioned it is def. a nod to Rastafarianism "I and I" is a phrase used by Rastas. I and I is a complex term, referring to the oneness of Jah (God) and every human. I and I is an expression to totalize the concept of oneness, the oneness of two persons. So God is within all of us and we're one people in fact. The term is often used in place of "you and I" or "we" among Rastafarians, implying that both persons are united under the love of Jah.
2. this song is heavily influenced by Rasta and the Old Testament. Think David and Bathsheba and King Solomon...
3. The way I see it, Bob is confessing to himself and to others that he cannot possibly live up to the expectations placed on him as "the leader/poet/voice of the generation". he has problems at home and is possibly unfaithful to his wife just like everyone else. He wants to be 'the man' but knows hes not. Someone else had to teach him about justice and truth, he didnt know it himself. Other people find joy and hope in his work but he still goes "barefoot" ie he is still looking.
4. Bottom line: he is being very humble in this song. he is just a man nothing more. he is happy that others recieve joy from what he does but he knows this joy comes from a higher power and not him directly...

love you bob!

Frank Zappa – Watermelon in Easter Hay Lyrics 15 years ago
i really agree with what you said freezesukka, well put!

for all its silliness i think the core of "Joe's Garage" as an album are Packard Goose and Watermelon. he wrote the song years before he died but i think with these two songs he really made it clear how he felt about the music/entertainment industry and to a greater extent society as a whole. he was at times a very cold and distant person from the number of bios ive read and was def. hard to deal with as many geniuses (genii? haha)tend to be. Kinda of related to your vision when you hear the song i always imagine him alone like the character Joe and literally playing his last guitar solo...

there's alot of things i dont agree personally about Frank Zappa but there is no doubting that the man was a true original. an innovator with his talent and apptitude come around very very rarely and this song is testimony to his genius.

The B-52's – Mesopotamia Lyrics 15 years ago
i love this song. my social studies teacher in grade school played this song when we were learning about ancient mesopotamia. although the lyrics are really goofy i think they are pretty straight forward. mesopotamia is the "craddle of civilization" there were ziggurat pyramids there and those ruins still exist. laying down the law probably refers to 'hammurabi's code' which is the first text of laws ever recorded that dates from that time period. ha im such a dork!

great song great band!

Talking Heads – The Great Curve Lyrics 15 years ago
i like scatterbrain's idea to a certain extent. talking heads were very heavy into african and world music as we all know. african music and dance (especially in west africa) is very sexual in rhythm and movement.
like many talking heads songs the lyrics are good but are just as important as inflection and the music itself.
women in many african cultures hold higher authority than men because they are "life givers" with the ability to give birth. "the world" in this song revolves on the natural sensuality of women in general...their hips and the way they move etc...
without women we couldnt procreate eh? :)

The Gun Club – Secret Fires Lyrics 15 years ago
i agree that there are def. dark undertones to this song (as with most of jeffrey lee pierce's lyrics).
i think basically it is about a lost love or about a fading love rather.
the "year we lived in secret fire" is a refrence to better days when their love was passionate and burning strong. he is now in a different and miserable place both physically and emotionally without this woman's love. she may not necessarily be "gone" from him but their love is more or less a shadow of what it once was during that first year together. see the lyrics for their song "a house is not a home" it has similar themes.

great song and unbelievably underrated band: thanks for posting!

i tend to agree wiith jackfour. i think lou is looking for a party in this song. papers is a reference to rolling papers and key could be as in kilo as in hard drugs, and now hes goin down to find a "lady of the night" on the corner and get his man on....if it lasts! ;)

Buffalo Springfield – Expecting To Fly Lyrics 18 years ago
another perfect example of how deep neil young's lyrics go. this song is obviously about a lost love and the singers reflection some time later. i like how the song is used at the end of "fear and loathing..." kinda emphasizes the "lost love" of the 60's years later in the 1970s.

Pixies – The Sad Punk Lyrics 19 years ago
hmm...well for starters ive always been under the impression that trompe le monde was a sorta concept album, with the theme being that an alien or aliens arrive to earth and are sorta touring our little blue globe. with this in mind i feel charles was making a concerted effort to critique a good many things in society. with this song i feel he is actually talking about our american "auto mobile society" and our greedy big oil businesses, keep in mind the persian gulf war is happening at this time. anyways the 'sad punk' dies and what happens after "a long time" has passed? he's "melted into fluid". crude oil? fossil fuels? i think so. he wants to then zoom down the highway of extinction as well. i feel that in three parts of this song charles is commenting on how our greed and want for oil leads to violence, a desire to return to the days of "walking beside you in the sun", and eventually extinction.

Pixies – Broken Face Lyrics 19 years ago
i dont think charles was 'into' incest more than he just had an honest and somewhat bizarre fascination with it and other darker themes found in the bible. i mean for real, there are so many pixies songs with biblical references, the most obvious being "dead". if you get a chance to watch the new dvd that came out, he talks about his childhood fascinations about the bible and 'sin' in the documentary section. anyways, great song from an amazing album
