Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 19 years ago
And since a few people have added their personal experiences into the mix, here's mine:

My class is sitting on the bleachers for a pep rally and we are absolutely stock still and stone silent. (My homeroom teacher actually cried at our indifference, in fact.) In between cheers, however, the guitar player in the band strikes up the opening chords of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the place goes apeshit! A bunch of people who don't give a damn finally do give a damn about something...and it's a song about not giving a damn! Hence the delicious irony of this song.

Isn't this site supposed to be about discussing the meaning of songs? Then what's all this debate about whether this is their best song, or if Nirvana is the greatest band, blah, blah, blah...

If you were a teenager when this song came out, and you took three minutes to try and understand the lyrics, then you saw yourself or your friends (and probably both) in it. It's the anti "My Generation"...instead of singing songs about how great our generation is, here's the truth: "We're apathetic, passive, and we live sad little lives filled with meaningless entertainment, loveless sex, and disgusting little social pretensions (cliques, trying to be shocking, etc.) On top of everything else, despite our "too cool" cynical attitudes, we're still pretty dumb and nieve. We do whatever we can to avoid living a meaningful life while at the same time pretending that our silly shit IS a meaningful life."

Dido – Isobel Lyrics 19 years ago
My wife's take on this song combines the abortion and suicide theories. Isobel has the abortion and then feels so overwhelmed with guilt that she kills herself. In any case, it seems like the lyrics are ambiguous enough to embrace any of these ideas.

Dido – Don't Leave Home Lyrics 19 years ago
Always struck me as a drug song, and a very good one at that. The lyrical similarity to love songs, however, is completely understandable, and I'm sure that the effect was intentional. The drug is talking here, and consider the tone it takes: A new lover -- maternalistic, possessive, exclusive. Security, with just a hint of menace coming through.
