Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Art Star Lyrics
|
I think on one level the song is the contrast between the true artist and the fake artist, with the poppy verse being the "fake artist" and the anguished chorus being the "true artist".
However another level of irony may also be present if one considers that the poppy verse may be ultimately more (subjectively) pleasant to listen to than the bludgeoning chorus.
Another possibility is that one part is the inside of the artist and the other is the outside.
Maybe Karen O is a songwriting genius who fully intended the song to work on all of these levels. I didn't like this song much when I first heard it, but it has grown on me, as only the best music does. My other fave is "Miles Away". |

Yma Sumac is a singer. I think Stereo Total did a cover of this song. Damn those cute french girls and their cute french songs. |

Spoon – Lafitte, Don't Fail Me Now Lyrics

This song is about how the band hate Ron Lafitte from Electra Records. See also "The Agony of Lafitte"
To me this means - bands be careful who you sign a record deal with. |

Whoops... "The Agony of Lafitte" is this song. The companion song (they were released together) is "Lafitte don't fail me now". |

Spoon – The Agony of Laffitte Lyrics

This song (along with "The Agony of Lafitte") is famous for being about how the band got shafted by Ron Lafitte, from their record label, Electra.
I am wondering who is Sylvia? The only two that spring to mind are Sylvia Plath and Sylvia Saint. The second one maybe makes more sense? |

Spoon – The Beast and Dragon, Adored Lyrics

At first I thought it was about mixed feelings for a returning lover, but now I think it is about the band hitting the road again, or maybe about the end of a dry spell in songwriting.
PS - Normally when I write one of these comments I have some background knowledge of what the song is about, but this album is brand new so finally I get to just write my own opinion and have the luxury of probably being wrong! |

The Magnetic Fields – Epitaph For My Heart Lyrics

I think it is about two friends of the *same* sex, and he falls in love with *him*, unintentionally. This is completely (beautifully) ambiguous, though, and I should not make such an assumption just because the writer of the song is gay.
I can't pick a favourite Magnetic Fields song because the competition is so intense. |

The Magnetic Fields – Busby Berkeley Dreams Lyrics

Busby berkley is a director/cinematographer from the 1930s, famous for his magnificent scenes of dancers, often shot from overhead so that they look like huge whirling kaleidoscopic flowers. This is what Stephen's dreams are like. He is missing somebody baaaad. |

Magazine – A Song From Under The Floorboards Lyrics

I think it is Howard Devoto showing off his literary influences. I have heard that it is a paraphrasing of Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground". Also, the words "I am an insect" possibly allude to Kafka. |

Spoon – The Way We Get By Lyrics

"Some Weird Sin" and "Shake Appeal" are BOTH Stooges songs. (the lyrics above are wrong on both of these). "Stormy Weather" is a standard too, but I'm not aware of the Stooges doing it.
I think this is a straightforward song about being a young stoner in a group of the same. |
