Regina Spektor – Back of a Truck Lyrics | 16 years ago |
There are roadway maps selling the back of a head Hey how much for that back of a head, man? Hey wait a minute that's my back of a head Hey you can't sell that man That's mine Hey sell it back to me man Hey sell it back to me It's mine! This part is about a prostitute, I think. Explaining the metaphor would be really vulgar, though. :P |
Sufjan Stevens – Vito's Ordination Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
the meaning of this song to me is about someone whose father has died. in his sorrow, he finds god. I have called you son I've made amends We should be father and son Or, if you haven't one |
Voxtrot – Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i have an mp3 of the original recording of the vocals; i'm 99% sure these are completely correct. (also, "taction" isn't a word.) If you think you're throwing words to the wise, the first thing that you ever felt, inside and under your belt To a place that smothers children Cuts the space between two lives I've seen you working, wasted and gray You've got a delicate heart, and listen, you would be smart To keep yourself in a world of mothers, sisters, daughters and wives Listen, I've come to rock this boat The take and giving means no room for the living And some of you think it loves and lovers Death in one corner leaves a space in the other I know that when it's over we'll be holding one another We only ever wanted to feel real Two years of touchin' only teaches you to fight We only ever wanted to try And if you see this world as ugly and thin Then you'll be so cruel to the touch, you'll lose the body you're in To a land of angry soil, it swallows boys and coughs up men I've seen you taste the salt of your tears You always stop when you start, and listen, you would be smart To keep yourself in a world of mothers, sisters, daughters and wives Listen, I've come to rock this boat The take and giving means no room for the living And some of you think it loves and lovers Death in one corner leaves a space in the other I know that when it's over we'll be holding one another We only ever wanted to feel real Two years of touchin' only teaches you to fight We only ever wanted to try I'll raise a glass to bein' no one else's fool Raise some question to the rule who says you'd have to lose a love to find one Take the things you don't know, spread them out in the sun Two futures melt into one Who says you have to lose a love to find one? I know that when it's over we'll be holding one another We only ever wanted to feel real Two years of touchin' only teaches you to fight We only ever wanted to try I'm around, I'm around, I'm ok, I'm ok Alive, I'm alive, I'm the same, I'm the same We are, yeah, we know we are We are just looking for something With our hands, and our fists, muscles, skin, charred and bone We never grew up, we were cut from the stone That holds you, body and soul We are all just looking for something |
Damien Rice – Accidental Babies Lyrics | 17 years ago |
That delicate look upon your face reference to the song "delicate." what an amazing song. all of those questions are the ones you ask yourself when someone leaves you for someone else. |
Stars – What the Snowman Learned About Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
oh, come on, you can't argue that the way it goes from techno and surprises you with strings and piano isn't masterful. it's pop and it's light but it's very calculated. |
Stars – Toxic Holiday Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i agree with you, tg. it's a simple song but i love it. |
Oasis – Helter Skelter (The Beatles cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this cover is boring. i expected more of that same wild punch in the spirit of the original, especially because of such oasis songs as "morning glory." |
Stars – Liar Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i wasn't sure if it was "a kid i knew..." - i don't have the physical cd so i could only transcribe by ear, though, and that's what i heard. thanks! now that you mention it, i think the full lyric might be "a kid i blew in central park called." correct me if i'm wrong. i agree with you on the events of the story, but i think the (unreliable) narrator has multiple personalities/is disassociative. he almost taunts the listener by saying "it was done by my double" right after "i took his life by the light of day." i'd be surprised if the last verse wasn't eventually included in a horror movie. i think he thinks that by leaving, he'll leave all of his demons behind. |
The Notwist – One Step Inside Doesn't Mean You Understand Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i always heard "map" as "myth," which made me think of christianity. even if i misheard, i still thought it was a viable interpretation. |
Feist – When I Was a Young Girl Lyrics | 18 years ago |
uh, no, the last verse is pretty much a part of the original folk song. it was actually, at various points, used as a cautionary parable against syphilis. http://www.mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=7498 if you're interested! great cover, though. |
Damien Rice – Cold Water Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"no one's daughter," i think, is a reference to how the singer still shuns the bible - she's not descended from eve or adam, she's not a "child of god," and she wearily asks the higher force to allow her that. |
Stars – My Radio Lyrics | 18 years ago |
hi, i think i have some minor corrections: It's hard to remember days Mornings lost in a chronic haze Breath is fast and the trains are slow, I barely feel it though All day long I fantasize In the dark behind other people's eyes And then they disappear Words get lost in the atmosphere The truth, I'll tell, I'll tell the truth Sixteen on a summer roof You ask for the facts Well I'll give you proof Hot sun on skin That crimson dress too thin All winter up her woods (i think this might be "all winter up her words", but i'm not sure, he pronounces "words" strangely later, as well) I touched it, it felt good All I want is my radio [2x] He speaks in a voice I know Sounds like sand when the tide is low We kiss to the voice each night Bathed in pale reactor light I cry when the morning comes Count my blessings and my thumbs Say: "Thanks god for whatever comes" Then quickly cross my fingers All I want is a room somewhere Far away from the chemoware And when I go my radio Will make a melody that lingers All I want is my radio... Station ninety-nine point 'O' [99.0] Tell the DJ: "DJ keep it slow" Light to fade before you know It's hard to remember days Mornings lost in a chronic haze Breath is fast and the trains are slow Barely even feel it though All day long I fantasize In the dark behind other people's eyes And then they slowly disappear Words get lost in the atmosphere The truth, I'll tell, I'll tell the truth Sixteen on a summer roof You ask for the facts Well I give you proof Here's the truth It's all I want, Is my radio All I want is my radio [...repeat innumerable times] ...tell the DJ: DJ keep it slow ...light to fade before you know also, as for the fm version, i don't think that there are any lyrical differences. i'll go back and try to make sure! |
Damien Rice – Cheers Darlin' Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"the boy you can fear your biggest mistake" i don't think this is the narrator being egotistical (i.e., "you passed me up, too bad, so sad"), it's a reference to whatever they had that unravelled so horribly that the girl thinks it was a mistake. the girl's now getting married to her new love, who he puts down, mocks and envies all at once. this song always came off as not a coulda-shoulda-woulda, but a sort of did-done-finito, except he still loves her. |
The Decemberists – Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i don't think the last verse is so much a venture from past to present as it is the ever-so-unreliable narrator's fantasies blending together, even though he earlier rationalized that they were free to go and continues to say, almost hollowly, that (he guesses) it's better to turn this way. |
Fiona Apple – Limp Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this song physically makes me shake because of how badly i can relate to the lyrics and fiona's voice. amazing. the meaning is rather obvious: she's in a conflicted relationship/friendship with someone who she once thought wanted to help her but is only getting high off of putting her down and dragging her back up. it takes a special kind of sadistic to be this sort of person and she's describing what a broken, shallow, hollow and ultimately cowardly (you'll be lying limp in your own hands - he still has to get off using her unconsented emotional pain, maybe physical? pain) person he is. i'm assuming 'he' from the metaphor. |
Metric – The Police and the Private Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think it's comparing every day life to espionage, how we all work to serve our own means to an end. there are some drug metaphors here but i think it's overall about the disconnection of everyone. paranoia and the frantic need to feel are so subtly present in this song. but the line that says the most, i think, is "got to get to you - the orphanage is closing in an hour" because she's obviously not referring to an actual orphan but using it as a metaphor for someone orphaned by love. "we're all missing love." |
Sufjan Stevens – The Seer's Tower Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oh my mother, she betrayed us, but my father loved and bathed us. i think this an almost-sarcastic reference to adam (or possibly god) and eve. i think that whoever said this song portrays a frustration with god was right. then again, saying this is just about one particular aspect of god/jesus is underestimating this dude's ability. |
Broken Social Scene – Major Label Debut Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think it might be this: "and i'm all hooked up i'm all fucked up and i'm all hooked up i'm all fucked up" otherwise, awesome song. the fast version is just so catchy. |
Sia – Breathe Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
koprolith: i disagree with the other poster. from the way she sings "breathe me," i always got the impression she was asking someone to 'devour her', in a sense. she needs this other person so much, she just wants to get lost in them. |
Architecture in Helsinki – It'5! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
*the rain cloud covers, rather. i probably shouldn't make typos when trying to correct lyrics. |
Architecture in Helsinki – It'5! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
these lyrics look screwy to me. here's what i think it is: "Stranger danger Danger stranger When you gonna follow through? The mistake you don't make Or he rain cloud covers above your house Steal the feeling Don't focus on the flame girl Have I failed to impress you? Could have sworn that wine and one and four make two But it's five! It's five! Can I ride with you 'Til the sunset gets all red? And we'll get chased by the moon Hope the passion don't fade Since you decided he's your spouse Wheeling, dealing, joking things will change girl Have I failed to impress you? 'Cause one and wine and one and four make two But it's five! It is five!" i think it's about still having feelings for a girl who once reciprocated them. you're still on the outside looking in on her group (one and four), but you think she still might have feelings for you (makes two). but no, it's five - a number in which you aren't included. |
Sufjan Stevens – They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back from the Dead!! Ahhhhh! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think this song is about the downtrodden rising to claim their destiny, whatever that might be. |
The Perishers – Pills Lyrics | 18 years ago |
sweet little song, but what always bothered me is that the two characters, fictional or otherwise, are so comfortable with in their stereotypical roles in the relationship as seen in the first verse. maybe that's one part of why they're falling apart. |
Gorillaz – Dirty Harry Lyrics | 18 years ago |
whoever said we were unrealistic obviously has no concept of metaphor, and apparently didn't read any of the lyrics afterwards, especially the rap. maybe they didn't mean, gosh, literally dancing. i think dancing lines here = the soldier just wanting to be happy with himself and his country. |
The Decemberists – The Mariner's Revenge Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
no, i do agree with warmgun that there's evidence of schizophrenia. this is a downright classic bit of unreliable narrator. so, has he created the bold circumstances for revenge in his mind? has he ever even BEEN to sea? this could easily be transplanted into a modern story and is rich in genre-bounding metaphor - he finally defeats his foe, imagined or not, in the mouth of the beast; his mother's voice eggs him on to a slow burn revenge, lurks his whole life through up until this moment - perhaps his final. awesome. |
Broken Social Scene – Lover's Spit Lyrics | 18 years ago |
and also, the version on beehives is a fucking triumph, then again so is the original. |
Broken Social Scene – Lover's Spit Lyrics | 18 years ago |
n4398734, you're being awfully silly, not to mention a wee bit homophobic. a song can mean whatever you want it to, this is a place to discuss what it means to YOU. in any case, this song is truly amazing. it's broken, no matter how you look at it. while i will agree that it's almost naive, i don't think it's about fellatio: that's used as a metaphor. the person really knows so little about love but presumes to know so much and tries to demonstrate it by talking about love like it's sex and just as meaningless and monotonous as sex itself can be, when the two things are radically different entities. brilliant. |
The Beatles – Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i always pictured this blank house mirroring the hollowness of their affair. all there is is a fireplace and a bathroom, she sleeps on the floor, he in the tub. she left for work, he lit a fire and he's lonely like he was when the affair begun. |
Alanis Morissette – Sympathetic Character Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this song had come up on the cd with only minor attention from me. when i finally started to pay attention to the lyrics, i found myself near tears. i was in a similar "relationship" - no physical abuse, though - and i felt like alanis was helping me speak to the guy i'd been with. rock on. |
Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood Lyrics | 18 years ago |
partly about drugs, partly about how drugs numb you in contrast to how numb society has become at large and how the person doesn't want to be a part of that anymore, he's sick of it and the system. he's useless, just another body, but not for long: his future (as an anarchist? :P) is coming on. esp.: "You see with your eyes I see destruction and demise Corruption in disguise From this fuckin' enterprise Now I'm sucking to your lies Through Russ, though not his muscles but the percussion he provides with me as a guide But y'all can see me now cos you don't see with your eye You perceive with your mind That's the inner So I'm gonna stick around with Russ and be a mentor" |
Stars – He Lied About Death Lyrics | 18 years ago |
it's obviously not just about gwb, i don't think. you could feasibly relate to it from any political side of the spectrum: the ceo as he squashes the little man, the powerhungry politician as he ladder-climbs, the well-off heir who is respected not for anything he's done but his money and power. "i hope your drunken daughters are gay!" is a statement yelled not just at george, but at all those tightwads with small minds who oppose gay marriage. |
Stars – Your Ex-Lover Is Dead Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"I'm not sorry there's nothing to save" i'm almost positive the actual lyric is 'i'm not sorry, there's nothing to say.' beautiful song. |
The Decemberists – The Bachelor and the Bride Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think perhaps the infanta is something of a continuation of this story, because of the rather sly hints at the daughter's questionable birth in the infanta. |
Wilco – Jesus, Etc. Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think this is a lament on lost religion, on how lost everyone is on god - particularly this one person in the protagonist's life. he himself has turned on god in the face of everything around him a long time ago, but his lover still believed - she loses faith, but she can still rely on him, even as buildings and economies collapse. |
Stars – One More Night Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this is one of my favorite songs. every echo, every pause, every inflection, every reverb is simply perfectly used. both parties sound so hollow but so pained. the little rockout after "you'll never touch him again" is an effective use of shock to get a reaction, musically, lyrically and emotionally. if it's about lovers mutually scorned, breakup sex, or a one-night stand between people who have slept together/know each other - all meanings would fit, frankly - it almost doesn't matter, because the emotions at work here are so primally human. "take off that dress/you won't freeze" particularly effects me because he's trying to care but he wants her at the same time. by the end of the song, you end up sympathizing and yet not liking both people, and that's brilliant. |
Stars – Your Ex-Lover Is Dead Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think this is a few years after a very messy break-up, wherein the age-old story of the relationship meaning more to one party than it did to the other took place. but in this case i think that all the years between the actual relationship, the person who was really in love stayed so and seeing the other person again finally broke the spell - "your ex-lover is dead," meaning the memory of the person that you're in love with no longer exists. he can't even remember your name. |
The Notwist – One with the Freaks Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this song is about growing up or growing out of the person you were before. That's why the song is so wonderfully upbeat and almost apologetic, like the other person said - because change is inevitable. "You'll no longer be kissed and kind" could not be a better introduction to the real world. |
Placebo – Haemoglobin Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think that this song is about someone who is lynched in modern times, most likely because of his skin color. In any case, it goes like this - I think - narrative-wise: - the song's subject is hung, for something he had no control over - these are his last thoughts while he is strung up - the violence is thwarted by a group of people cutting him back down, helping him to medical attention - his life is saved miraculously ("breaking every law of science"), but at the horrible price of living with what has happened to him, which leaves him pretty screwed up, needless to say ("gonna make you scared of me") which brings me to the haemoglobin element: it dawns upon him that his skin color is an essential part of who he is and he cannot stop that - he can only respect it. "Jesus looking down on me" implies that he was earlier ashamed of who he was - of his skin color in particular - or other people were ashamed. Haemoglobin is the key to your healthy heartbeat, but it also colors the blood. you can change just about everything but you cannot change your essential self, no matter how hard you try. learning to stand up for yourself and respect yourself is the key to living. this song is just chilling, whatever way you define it. |
Damien Rice – Sand Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think this song is about a person who's been jaded by their life experiences, but he's in love so he's torn between being optimistic and happy and his old ways of cynicism. |
Aqualung – Strange And Beautiful (I'll Put A Spell On You) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The song itself is fantastic. Aqualung's lyrics are a little simplistic, there's nothing you haven't heard before in them, and you certainly don't need songmeanings.net to decipher what they mean, but they breathe life into them and make them beautiful. |
Interpol – C'mere Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Whatever details of the song's story, the core message is obviously being in love with somebody who does not feel the same way and you don't know how to communicate what you feel to them. Most likely after the end of a relationship with the person. I find the following lyrics particularly ironic though: "It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves. / The trouble is that you're in love with someone else. / It should be me. Oh, it should be me." Simply because the song then goes into the normal Interpol lyrical style, less boldly vulnerable, more "locked inside itself." |
Interpol – Not Even Jail Lyrics | 19 years ago |
"I'll subtract pain by ounces" is perhaps the most profanely drug-addicted thing I have ever read/heard. Most of the song makes sense in that context, and where it doesn't are the shades of a sexual relationship that was going on while all of this was going down. I think the story is about someone falling so deep into addiction that he gets in trouble for it. He loses the person he has grown to love (if only that love is not fully blossomed from that sexual relationship that they had) because he let his ways get ahead of him - "give some meanings to the means." He finally realizes what he has been doing is wrong, and instead of trying to rebuild relationships - like he wanted to so desperately at first - he wants to seperate himself away from humanity, and he builds his own personal jail. Or I might be over-reaching a little. ;D |
