Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 17 years ago
i think smellyhippy has the best analysis of the "blind spots" line. It seems like if he was referring to the "eye in the sky" part, he would have put that _before_ the boss quitting the job. IT is the first verse and is never repeated again.

I think the blind spots reference means that since everything is falling apart, he is going to go out and intentionally find blind spots, thus killing himself in a car accident.

The whole "eye in the sky reference" i think is most poignantly concluded with "when you get to the promised land, you're gonna shake that eyes hand". I think that isaac is presenting an obvious oxymoron that most religions ignore: How can god be super-human and yet human-like at the same time? It is the stupid assumption of humans that if there is some super-deity that he will be human-like, someone who you can shake hands with.

see? eyes don't have hands! how can someone shake that eyes hand? Thats at least how ive always heard it.

Modest Mouse – Bukowski Lyrics 19 years ago
I think that isaac is saying that there are two opposing viewpoints that he has been proposed in his life (or atlest, that he is discussing in this song).

The first (although brought up second) is religion, in which he lists his problems with accepting a god fashioned after human design. For those religious people bashing brock for giving his point of view, shame on you. Anyways, one the first hand he feels like he doesnt want to take the religious view, or else he would feel too controlled ( ie placating to a control freak).

On the other hand, there is the route bukowski took, and that is to fuck-all life and have what little of a good time you can in your life before you die. I think "The good times are killing me" also brings up this theme as well. He says in both the beginning in the end that he is leaning towards this view (as in "every night turns out to be" more like it). His only problem with that view (bukowski's view), is that he feels like someone who feels and acts that way is an asshole.

In the end I think he leans towards bukowski's side, but at the same time admits that he thinks bukowski is a dick. I think that he views himself as an asshole as well, from lyrics of other songs like 3rd Planet, "my only art of fucking people over" etc.

skd2k1, I think by "wake" he is referring to the event held after a funeral where the dead is mourned with family members and such.

Although i guess I could see it as meaning "wake" as in getting up in the morning. perhaps a double meaning, but since both marriage and wakes are religious events that everyone (supposedly) should have one of (one when alive, one when dead), i think that the two terms are related.

In response to what the references to cakes and weddings means in reference to devils work day and whatnot... i am a bit of a loss. Any other ideas?

I have read in a magazine that this song is about Brandon falling asleep on his pinky and it being dead for 3 weeks, hence the pins and needles and whatnot.

Did anyone else notice that the refrain "Pins and Needles, Nice to Know You", the first letters of each word kinda spell pinky? P.ins N.eedles N.ice K.now Y.ou

Pnnky, sounds like pinky to me.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Zero Lyrics 22 years ago
i dunno bout the zero to glass thing, but i always thought it was him reminiscing about how stupid he was a kid, a complete poser who pretended to be something eh was not. he also was in love with a girl, whom he tried pretending to be something he was not.

in regards to his reflection there is "no connection to myself".

"bullshit fakers, enchanted kingdoms, fashion victims chew their charcoal teeth"

"but i never let on, that iw as on a sinking ship"

basicly i always thought he was pissed because he never let his true feelings show, and always put on a fassad. he was "empty", he was "zero" or nothing, and she was "my one and only", hence 1. get it, zero and one.

yeah well, thats what i always thought.

The Smashing Pumpkins – The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right) Lyrics 22 years ago
This song was released with the aeroplane flies high box set shortly after the release of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, however i have a feeling this song was written earlier.

Yes, the entire smashing pumpkins band was on a lot of drugs around the Gish and Siamese Dream album releases (especially Gish.. jesus christ daydream is a fuckin trip), so its possible this song was written around that time too. I think kaisute's interpretation is correct.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Cherub Rock Lyrics 22 years ago
I think alimania is right. Billy always starts off his albums with a telling song. with machina in the everlasting gaze he starts off boldly wiht "Yaknow, im not dead", which is perfect because after adore everyone thought the pumpkins were dead. Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness starts off with a piano piece of the same name, a very dreary and sad piece which kind of states what the entire album is like.

Siamese Dream kicks off with this little ditty, which works because at the time when the album came out the music industry (mtv etc) was going crazy over indie rock like the smashing pumpkins, and according to billy (atleast from an interview i read with him at the time) he was pissed off about it.

"should have listenned to what im told", possibly a record executive talking to him?

"cause they know who is righteous and what is bold, so im told", possibly what the record executives are talking about the fans. THEY decide what is hip, etc.

that plus the quotes alimania mentioned.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Bullet with Butterfly Wings Lyrics 22 years ago
oh and by the way, if you get the Smashing Pumpkisn collectors DVD it explains all the videos, and the video for BWBW isnt a POW camp, its a like a workers mine/construction site thing. The video has its own story seperate from the song: the video is about this guy that is in this mine construction camp thing and he finds a beautiful butterfly and tries to protect it from all the ugliness around him, and he ends up getting beat up(and dies?) from all of the terribly things around him (mainly people).

just fyi. that came from billy's mouth so i can actually vouch for that one to be really true, not sure about my post just a second ago above that ones just my interpreation.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Bullet with Butterfly Wings Lyrics 22 years ago
i think the song is billy's personal feeligns but theres also an important parellel to the story of job in it. Quick brief description for the bible-uneducated, Job was a great person his entire life and always loved God, then god decided to test his faith by killing his only son to see if hed still remain faithful.

Other than the line "I suppose ill show all my cool and cold like old job", which is an obvious one, he speaks of "what do i get for all my pain? betrayed desires", which would indicate job's work his entire life, all for nothing.

Then "Jesus was an only son to you", which would be Job speaking to god, for Job had only one son also.

also after he loses his son he speaks of "now im naked, nothing but an animal, but can you fake it, for just one more show". This i guess is implying Job's continued faith afterwards, even though he was stripped of his loved son, etc.

Then most of the rest of the song is just rage and pissed off'ness that you guys are talking about. I'm not sure about the extra job material, but it seems to fit.

By the way, im completely atheist and don't support billy's christian ways at all, im just pointing out the parellel of the stories.
