Carissa's Wierd – The Piano Song Lyrics 18 years ago
"heaven's a distance, not a place" is a lyric from an iron and wine song called "two hungry blackbirds." i like the interaction between these two artists, especially the cover of "chelsea hotel #2" they played live together.

Wolf Parade – I'll Believe in Anything Lyrics 18 years ago
i just read a little inteview with win butler from the arcade fire, in rolling stone, where he says this is "the best thing [he's] heard this year." i just liked that in association with the arcade fire a couple of posts ahead.

i think both songs have that sense of isolation or escapism or whatever, and it's a little naive in both cases. and great.

Van Morrison – Into The Mystic Lyrics 18 years ago
i've decided that this is the song to be played at my funeral -- it makes me feel better than almost any other song i've heard.

Iron & Wine – Sacred Vision Lyrics 18 years ago
this song kills me. it's so sad, but in that sam beam way that makes it really beautiful to listen to while it pains you to hear it. i appreciate the simplicity of the guitar because it really emphasizes the lyrics, which i think are great -- particularly the line: "there's no way to grow that don't hurt." i don't think this is his finest moment, but it's a great little song that i really enjoy.

Iron & Wine – Sixteen, Maybe Less Lyrics 18 years ago
i didn't really find this disappointing; in fact, it's an older song from a home recording session that i think was improved upon in the new ep. this is actually one of the more upsetting iron and wine songs for me, because the themes of dissatisfaction with life and longing for the past are pretty big downers, especially in the stanza with the line: "call it predictable, yesterday my dream was of you." i like it a lot.

The Mountain Goats – Riches and Wonders Lyrics 19 years ago
i think both individuals have real feelings of love for one another, but it seems like they're trying a little too hard to build something more expansive out of it -- it's like they use an equation to achieve the best possible result, but the love that comes from it isn't organic.

they try as hard as they can to make things grander than they really are; inventing secrets, learning new ways to say "i love you" -- they use these techniques and act carefully in order to not disrupt the thing they've been building. it makes me think of love as a plant they've been fertilizing and pruning until it becomes a beautiful, but carefully orchestrated, thing.

"and i want to go home / but i am home" makes me think maybe the narrator realizes that even though their love works in a mathematical way, all of the extra work and awareness makes it less satisfying. he doesn't feel like the space they've built is really home, but acknowledges that it's supposed to be, so he has to reign in his "poor impulse control" and keep working to maintain things.

overall, i think things are wonderful on the surface, and even emotionally to an extent, but also that there's an underlying sense of dissatisfaction that peeks through and makes the song less idyllic than it first seems.

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics 19 years ago
i've never heard a song that sounded more like happy regret, or comforting nostalgia.

The Mountain Goats – See America Right Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is definitely better live, which i didn't think was possible. that little guitar bit between verses is the highlight for me, but the whole thing is really fantastic. john darnielle breaking it down on stage is pretty much the best thing ever.

The Mountain Goats – Your Belgian Things Lyrics 19 years ago
i didn't really realize how emotional this song was until i saw them play last night, and watched him perform it. the audience was completely silent and still, and he sang it so well. the "i guess, but jesus, what a mess" was definitely the finest point -- the whole thing is fantastic.

Antony and the Johnsons – For Today I Am a Boy Lyrics 19 years ago
for me, antony's songs aren't especially about the lyrics, but about how he manipulates them with his voice. the words to this song seem really simple when you read them, but when you hear him SING them, that's when they feel powerful.

Antony and the Johnsons – Hope There's Someone Lyrics 19 years ago
"Oh, I'm scared of the middle place / Between light and nowhere / I don't want to be the one / Left in there"

i don't think i've ever read a more articulate description of a person's fear of death, or heard a more painful and beautiful vocal performance singing about the topic. and the end of the song, when the piano picks up and he starts to just sing, it's so cathartic. antony is absolutely amazing.

The Velvet Underground – I Found A Reason Lyrics 19 years ago
the first thing i thought when i heard it was about irony, mostly because of the little sweet-talk breakdown that lou reed does -- it's really really silly. i adore the song, but it also makes me laugh a little bit, which makes it even better to me than a straight love song.

M. Ward – Sad, Sad Song Lyrics 19 years ago
the thing i love about this song isn't the lyrics, but the way he sings it -- m. ward's voice is glorious, and this song is a great example of how he can set a mood just by the intonations in his vocals.

M83 – Don't Save Us from the Flames Lyrics 19 years ago
"the wheels are melting" reminds me of the line in the arcade fire's "in the backseat" about melting the street beneath your feet. mostly just because they're both about car accidents and both gorgeous songs.

but this one, it has the vibe of a love song in that great, wall of sound, slowdive way, but the lyrics sort of ground it for me. it's my favorite song on the album.

and i think it's "dreaming for us, darling" instead of "dreaming for a starling"

Bloc Party – This Modern Love Lyrics 19 years ago
the thing i like about this song is that it gets across the cynicism or maybe distrustfulness of his (and my) generation. i love the narrator's fascination with or need for facts -- there aren't flowery declarations or anything overtly sentimental in the song, but it still gets the point across, maybe because there's no poetry but honesty instead.

Arcade Fire – My Heart Is an Apple Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this song could be partly about using someone and recognizing that it's what you're doing -- eating up all of the person's love in a really gluttonous way. in this case, the narrator has enough sense or rationality to end it before it becomes a bigger problem: "please don't even call" so it makes the cut cleaner.

on the other hand, sometimes i think the whole thing is about texas and his mixed feelings toward his home state. more likely, i guess, is that it's a combination of person and place that he wants to avoid -- it's like a total escape. and he sounds so desperate and weary that it makes sense to me.

Bloc Party – She's Hearing Voices Lyrics 19 years ago
i think a big part of this song is the narrator's discontent -- maybe even desperation -- in his own situation. he only really mentions his own feelings at the end, after he explains her sort of crazy behavior, and i think he considers everything she does and realizes that it's a little too much for him to take.

and i agree, it's a joy division throwback, big time.
