it's not about sex, it's about people who buy organic sugar

Shakira – The One Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know how much faith to have in Shakira, but I like to think this song is in satire.

The things she lists are a combination of bad things, really. Superficial aspects of love, codependence, gender roles, consumerism... Going out on dancing on Friday and then to church on Sunday reminds me of the cycle of sinning at night and begging for repentance in the morning. Needing arms to hide from muses suggests being sheltered from one's own creative self, in addition to the line about writing more happy songs.

The line, "in a world full of strangers" could be poking fun at how in our culture we tend to be alienated and let our neighbors be strangers and be afraid of everyone.

Tori Amos – Cooling Lyrics 18 years ago
ashpash588: I've always clearly identified the "cooling" lyrics as having to do with passion. Passionate feelings are associated with/produce heat. A situation can have a heat and passion all of it's own. These lyrics suggest a set-up that has lost its passion (is "cooling"), and while the singer knows there is a need to lose interest as well, it cannot be done.

The lyrics of
"so then love walked up to like
said i know that you don't like me much"
makes me think of harmless crushes (the "do you like him, like him" kind of thing) accidentally growing into deeper feelings that allow a person to be hurt

"Like" dislikes "love" because love creates a vulnerability like does not.

Garbage – Push It Lyrics 19 years ago
This song doesn't register to me so much as make-up sex, but just a relationship where there is a lot of stress and not much free time. The narrator is trying to salvage the relationship from her irritability which may come from being over-worked, in addition to perhaps some mental or emotional instability. Staying up all night is trying to find time for each other to work through their problems, instead of just immediately separating. It might be a final plea kind of thing.

This reference to blood is menstrual, if you want my opinion.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Pin Lyrics 19 years ago
The pin pushing makes me think of those collections of dead insects...with the pins pushed through them.

And this song suggest being dispensable, a mere specimen in a collection of sexual conquest.

"gonna go back in"
After the people are fucked they go back to their box, and they feel trapped in this unloving situation.

Tori Amos – I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics 19 years ago
This song always reminds me of...well, I don't know the specific details, but a highschool teacher of mine told us about this mother/wife who kept all her children home from school one day, and while her husband was at work, one by one drowned them in the bathtub.

I think she had recently given birth and was suffering from this after-birth depression that occurs in some women after having a baby.

Garbage – As Heaven Is Wide Lyrics 19 years ago
Dual suffering.
Ideally, I see this song coming from a daughter who was abused somehow by a parent in a highly religious household (religious corruption, thus wanting to be far from God, but still clinging to imbedded Christian concepts of Heaven, holiness, Hell, angels, and God's existence).
Both have to live with their sins. The song makes me feel like these injustices are never spoken of either.

"Something that you said will stay with me
Long after you're dead and gone "
This gives me the feeling that the abuser is considerably older than the abused. And once they get to die and finally escape their suffering, the person they hurt still has to live with the pain.

"If flesh could crawl my skin would fall
From off my bones and run away from here "
This also might suggest the victim is physically confined somehow, by wheelchair or otherwise, though I don't think this is necessarily the case.

“As far from God
As heaven is wide “
The desire to be far from God would stem from that being brought up with abuse from what was said to be a Godly person.

High energy defiance?
Being protective and writing letters secretly?

Frog Eyes are so damned weird. But I love this song. And Frog Eyes.

The Faint – Worked Up So Sexual Lyrics 19 years ago
It is about the sex industry and sex culture. The Faint is suggesting that this is a hurtful organization.
The emphasis culture has on sex, and even more specifically, sex ideals (young women, a certain shape of woman) is harmful to all members, men and women alike.

"what's it like to have a room of guys encircling you? "
Predatory behavior that men learn to display towards women. Women become this alienated creature, not just another human being. Men may not prey on women violently, but they learn to prey on her sex.

"some people need a little challenge to their fantasies at home."
our overflowing sex industry discourages imagination, by providing heavy doses of what they want us to desire and become dependent on to be sexually satisfied.

"is it good to get these men worked up so sexual?"
Someone was offended by this lyric, feeling it was blaming women, in a way similar to blaming women for men raping them.
I don't think this line is directed towards women at all, but to the sex industry.
And IS it good to promote strip clubs and sex clubs - offering humans no intimacy whatsoever? I would say NO, it is NOT.

"older dancers gag at what new talent seems to mean. smaller tits and younger limbs can cause a fit of rivalry."
This line is specific to the damage the sex industry does to the relationship among women. It promotes competition and rivalry between women.
