I think this song is about how Ben is trying to have new relationships after a major one ended. He's scared to get involved again, but he doesn't make it sound like cliche teenage bullshit. That's what I love about Ben's writing. When he says "new additions" I think he means new people he's introduced into his life. And when he thinks he can "pull into a new driveway," or start a relationship with someone new, he can't help but think of his past lover, and all the mistakes he made. I think the bridge of the song is when he reflects on how easily he can be suckered into shortlived and possibly shallow relationships. And how they tend to go sour quickly, or they "start to feel like work." He then say's he "can't let go" which seems pretty self explanatory, then says "I get in, I get out, it's not right and you shouldn't have to get used to it" almost like a warning for future significant others. Ben writes songs like I breath air. He is amazing. |

I think Ben is trying to convey his feeling of uselessness. After his friend is gone, he can't help but feel like he has no purpose, that his end is inevitable, and he feels devastatingly insignificant. I think he feels overwhelmed about how things can change so drastically. I love the way he sings "So I guess everything's just perfect." |

after reading dancehall hips' entry, it made me think that maybe the "towers" could be in reference to God, as he makes another reference to God in the line "i've wasted what little He gave me." i think that is what he means anyway: That "the answers" are in some giant, almost incomprehensible form that seems terribly overwhelming to him. the meaning of "comfortable cars in motion" is still unclear to me. |

when ben says "completely soused" i also think he means under the influence, mainly because he has made other references to alcohol in other death cab songs. that line makes me think that his initial love interest was alcohol induced, and when he says "they drowned" perhaps he could be referring to himself and his lover, or perhaps a metaphor their hearts, being drowned in alcohol. i'm not so sure about the "final days" line. perhaps he thinks that his drunken love will begin a new chapter in his life, and he is bidding farewell to himself, to begin life as a new ben. or something like that. i'm not so sure about the rest of the song, but i think the overall meaning is about a relationship that he may regret getting into, but can't let go of. not too sure about the middle passage. |
