I think it's about unresolved attraction to someone you should know better than to get involved with. The excitement of knowing you'll be spending some time with them and wanting *some* reward for your patience... Threat of rain probably means the threat of being surprised by their vengeful partner. Much too stirring a song to be about an argument! :) PS. it's 18 carat not 28 carat gold regrets. And I can't see how the title relates to the lyrics. |

I think it's about a couple whose relationship hasn't been too good, whose lives have lacked fulfilment, and one of them is dying. Possibly I'm prejudiced because death is a recurring theme of DG. (The One I Love, White Ladder, etc. All brilliant though.) |

I agree with enamon that he has been kicked out or had to leave in a hurry, but there's no reason to be alarmed by dreaming of his own girlfriend. If he were dreaming of (for example) his dad's girlfriend, that would be a reason for leaving the place he's always known (second verse), and getting as far away as possible, but possibly still sending presents home from his travels with the appearance of normality. By running away, he would be true to his conscience but untrue to love? That's my own twisted angle anyway. Incidentally does he actually sing "I said it's no occassion"? It sounds like "no vacation". But still no story he could tell! |

The repo man puzzled me, but I think Scottish Lion has it correct. However I agree with Althlete***, that she is alive and it is he who is dying. I'm not sure where the contributor found these lyrics, but I would like to offer some small corrections: in the first verse, "send a little prayer OUT to you 'cross the falling dark" in the second, "perfect summer's night, not a wind that breathes" in the third, "just the lights so bright baby, in the Bay Hotel. Next wave coming in, like an ocean roar". And I love this song. |

I don't think the words "Honest Mistake" refer to any instance of two-timing, where the only mistake would be expecting to get away with it, or to spoken words, where the words "slip of the tongue" and "I didn't mean it" would come more naturally. I think the Honest Mistake was to have a romantic relationship for the wrong reasons and think it would be OK. Maybe they would have been friends otherwise. And like everyone else, I have an angle on this. It reminds me of someone. I hope he knows it was an honest mistake. |

I think this could be interpreted pretty straightforwardly as being about someone being left on their own and being so confused by it as to make a mess of the tasks the other person has always done. They try to get over their feelings of distance by telling themself that reality is like this, until they finally get a perspective on life again. However I have a feeling that all this is merely an elaborate metaphor for some bigger picture of the world, the exact signifcance is known only to the singer. |

Whoever said it was about death was absolutely right. It is an imaginative combining of the process of dying ("my senses have been stripped"), longing to go on that trip (an obvious pun), and the eventual funeral procession - what else could his own parade mean? He is still there "not sleepy" , feeling his soul fade as they lay him to rest, to the music of a tambourine.
