The Smashing Pumpkins – Bury Me Lyrics 7 years ago
@[ShineATX:16493] I totally see what you're saying and it makes sense. I think the greatest thing about lyrics for those that take the time to think about it is that it means something to them that's personal and that is something that nobody can interpret or take from them which is why music is so deep and dynamic and many layers. I have often heard the authors of songs are writers of lyrics say that they love hearing how others interpret the song and they draw inspiration from that. I don't think that there is actually a right or wrong way to interpret a song only with the exception when people project the State of Mind the author was in when they wrote it. It always bothers me when people assume that a song and its meaning are irrelevant because they project that it was written while under the influence. Well if that's the case then you might as well toss out half the music library because that's how songs are written.

U2 – Running To Stand Still Lyrics 9 years ago
@[kingbingo:894] its very annoying when people push there lyrical interpritation onto others as if its "so obvious". I hate to make you sound stupid kinbingo but lyrics mean something different to the individual just as each of our paths in life, even if run parallel, will draw different meanings. To make a correction to your comment regarding 'no hidden meaning" according to bono there is a LOT of personal and hidden meaning. For example, the towers he mentions are the Ballymena Seven Towers which is where many in dublin go to get and use drugs. The towers are symbolic in meaning but its not OBVIOUS to anyone until it was revealed by bono.

Bury Me

[over you, like an angel]

bury me in love
bury me in blood

shield your kisses
take your heart
bury me if it hurts

i love my sister so [chain, unchain]
she don't smother me [chain, unchain, unchain]
i breathe in spades i know [unchain]
i'm a jack of all trades
won't you bury me?

want to see her born inside [hide, hide]
some are things you just can't hide
if you see her tell me why [hide, hide]
why won't she come outside

if you see her tell me why [hide, hide]
why won't she come outside
want to see her born inside [hide, hide]
some are things you just can't hide

she waits, bury me
she waits, bury me

"The alternate version on the b-disc is the original demo, which was done before we ever met Butch, so you can see the decision was made to pretty much keep faithful version of the album version, there's really not much difference at all, other than Butch's version is far superior. It's a song I actually thought about taking off the album. By the time we got around to recording Gish, I wasn't that partial to the song. Didn't think it was that good of a song. And- but it was one of those things, like- well, we kinda looked around, we didn't have anything better, and I hadn't taken the time to write anything better, so we just ended up recording it. I kinda like it more now, because it does again capture some kind of spirit of the band. There's sort of an awkwardness to it that I like. God knows what the lyrics are about. "Bury me in love, bury me in blood"? Um, a little dark? Yeah, I dunno what else to say about that song. I wrote it in my bedroom, and- you know, a song like that we would spend a tremendous amount of time taking what is almost like a non-song, and working it & working it & working it until it's very dynamic. So even though- the song would survive & succeed & we'd play it live because the dynamics would work, even if the song wasn't so great. So I think it does kinda show something in there. But as a song, I don't rate it much at this point." -BC, Matt Pinfield interview, Nov. 2011

"Bury me in love. Bury me in blood. These lines have no connection to a meaning. Impressions strung along the wires, criss-crossing chants and chasms. Nothing has any meaning. I am buried beneath non-meaning. We are lost. Songs like these point the way; dead ends that are worth coming into blindly with fatal force. I often forget songs like this exist, but they are testament to a faith I once had, now forgotten." -BC, Gish 2011 re-issue liner notes

I was also going to say, that the movie 'the sweet hereafter' makes more sense to me after reading your comments. Its odd that a song, chosen for a movie can be so relevant to the overall concept. Makes me wonder if the movie was written based on the song, i doubt it. Just interesting is all

wow, wonderdog.. that is a very interesting and insightful explanation of this song. What is interesting is that this song was used in a movie 'the sweet hereafter' which Sarah Polley covers.

Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrpaoC_-Wk8

I really enjoyed your thoughts on this song and wonder if this is something you wrote yourself or did you learn it from another source? either way its great! (i realize this post is over 8 years old however music and the topics related to them are timeless, my attempt to subdue those interested in derailing my OP)

not every song on earth is about addiction.. The most referenced being heroin addiction.. but i will give my best explanation as to why so many addicts relate almost anything scribed... to their addiction:

Heroin is derived from the poppy plant which produces several alkaloids. one of which is morphine. heroin is a synthesized morphine or a condensed version. Morphine is an alkaloid or chemical and has a molecular makeup that is almost identical to a natural occurring chemical found in the human brain, endorphins. Endorphins is how our bodies deal with pain. When humans inject heroin they are releasing large amounts of the endorphins through the axiom and into an area (similar to a long tube) where receptors grab onto (in a normal state) the chemical. Because so much is released into the system at once, the body is overcome with a warm feeling often refereed to as a warm blanket. The effect is so strong because of the molecular similarity that the body has a hard time realizing that this is not a normal occurrence and withdraws are immediate and intense. The longer the use the harder the withdrawals. RLS is a common side effect and is what gave 'kicking the habbit' its name. It often takes weeks to get over the withdrawals of heroin

Life is very similar to the ups and downs one experiences with a heroin addiction. Love can be great for a time, but when its over, the human body shuts down and side effects can be severe. Death is very similar. The bottom line is, a heroin addict can take a nursery rhyme and some how relate it to their addiction because of its proximity to the pain and ups and downs of life, love and death... the other 3 things people write about.

Not everything is about addiction

Built to Spill – Kicked It in the Sun Lyrics 12 years ago
i love it when people like 'the reynolds' act like lyrics are suppose to mean the same thing to everyone and by their own logic get it completely wrong. the sun stopped shinning has less to do with 'turning the sun on' and more to do with a reference to a biblical passage where the sun will be turned off (assuming you believe this is the meaning of the song). One cold also take 'kicked it in the sun' to mean that the person gave into the 'back washed thoughts' of religion and typically a reference to light is a reference to god or religious awakening... I believe doug uses the sun because its 'blinding' and knowing his views, religion makes people blind. just saying.

ABSOLUTELY one of my fav songs... this album is the best album IMO. I mean its just insane how good this song is along wth the song before it, kicked in the sun. on this track at the 2:44 mark doug works his guitar into this melodic place and then it just becomes euphoric at about 3:30... just simply amazing music. And the lyrics.. you cant trust anyone, cuz your untrustable... SO TRUE!!

Yes, there are pictures circulating of Bowie at the show and David Byrne too... from talking heads. From what i understand it happened while they were writing this album and it had not been released yet... I see where you are going with your question and it would be interesting to know if Bowie showed up because of this song or if the song showed up because of david bowie attendance. Either way Bowie, Byrne and CYHSY are all masters of the trade.

Blind Melon – Tones Of Home Lyrics 14 years ago
Well... normally i would not disagree with a meaning but here you are interpreting. I do not know his state of mind nor do you However, to those unfamiliar with injecting heroin is sometimes refered to as 'pulling the trigger'. Heroin is synthesised from its original form found in papaver poppy plants(papaver somniferum). It is a white substance which is broken down and redistributed for profits until consumed. In the United states its possible to die from many complications associated with this process. The greatest threat is getting pure dope after several low level batches which can lead to an overdose. Your system can only process larger doses as it builds up in your system. That is why some view it as 'pulling the trigger'. To make people go away is to shoot up. The song is not as deep as some make it out to be. Heroin replaces natural occurring chemicals in the brain called 'endorphins' which help us cope with pain. in fact its the only plant alkaloid found which has a chemical structure identical to that in which we produce naturally in the brain. This too is why heroin causes such sever withdraw symptoms due to your bodies receptor sites shutting down to adjust for the overhead.

And the worst part is he/it has the nerve to tell us what its not about then TOTALLY SCREW UP THE real meaning... Which is obviously about the reality and withdrwal from religion. COULD IT BE ANY MORE STRAIGHT FORWARD???? lol My guess is this clown found out his boyfriend is really a girl and that would explain why he used the word HER... in capital letters... :p! nice try tinker...

Like other songs it seems to be about being confused and anxious by life in general then you discover religion and it sort of keeps you in check... not allowing you to blossom.. then you find out its all BS.. all the lies about religion and you were living a lie some preacher has been feeding you and everyone. in the end you discover you wasted so much time but its too late. In the end it all goes away... Not now, not ever anyone.

I find this song simple.... but im sure there are very deep deep meanings others will share.

the part where he is chanting/ yelling he says 'YOUR JUST A' over and over. Then says boneface. which he says throughout the song. In the video he looks into a hole/grave and says boneface... which is also a common theme throughout the song..

your just an inside.. adjust your insides. He is saying stop pretending to be someone your not.. adjust your insides is plural.

There are only a few parts i get about this song and many i have no idea. I think it will be rather obscure to think any 3 people will come up with the same conclusion what this song means to them. Maybe that is what makes it so unique.

bosco9 your comment has to be the most biased and self serving comment I have seen in a long time. Music is not celebrated by borders like hokey is to Canada, Baseball to the USA or soccer is to Europe. Canada produces one unique artist that your in love with and all the sudden America has to forget Tracy Chapman, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Hendrix and the hundreds of other superior artists that have come before ‘the hip’. Does tragically hip compare to some of the great American artists? I think you need to come back to reality… Canada’s contribution to ‘intelligent’ music is laughable compared to the decades of amazing artist that come from America. I think you have shown how stupid you are by comparing tragically hip to American pop music. But then again… your Canadian. What do you know?

Pink Floyd – Waiting for the Worms Lyrics 15 years ago
eatmydonuts the hammers are a symbol as was the swastika. Notice they have similar colors and layout. The hammers represent oppression by force. The word 'hammer' is referenced many times throughout the album.. 'And the hammers batter down the door' and 'Let me hammer him today'. The hammers are used in the movie as hitler used the swastika to promote his growing army, a symbol of strength and power. (Hitler choose the swastika symbol because of its use by the ancient pharaohs of egypt who used it as a symbol to force millions of followers to build pyramids and structures) I also believe the hammers were choosen beause they represent both destruction and construction. You could argue the hammers were a tool representing his building of the wall.. and later the destruction of the wall. It is no secret there is a military theme carried out through this part of the album. When waters sings 'Waiting to put on a black shirt' he is clearly refering to Mussolini and his black shirt army. And of course he references Hitler when he says 'Waiting for the final solution To strengthen the strain'. Hitler and Mussolini play a big part in this song because pink struggled to understand how one person can command so many to commit acts so unthinkable... I think this coupled with the loss of his father caused him to hate what he had become in his mind.

additionally i believe the worms are to represent the decay of pinks mental state. They also represent the millions of jews that died in the hollocaust.

So you dont like fox news.. i suppose if someone asked you would tell them you prefer cnn or msnbc or abc.. cbs or nbc? all have been left wing biased. The new your times is notoriously left winged but you dont bother to point that out because it does not help your argument. The truth is they are all biased because they are selling something that generates ratings which attract big corp. to invest large adv dollars directed at a target market. If more people would rather get there news with a right winged point of view... well if your business is news i think you can figure out the rest. Pink Floyd – When the Tigers Broke Free Lyrics 17 years ago
bowzer1110 This song is not about a "loss to a war" it is about a battle at the frontline of the Anzio bridgehead in 1944. Roger Waters father served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers Company C. Lieutenant Rogers was used as a model for Pinks(syd)'s father in the movie/album. Of course we all know the Germans lost the war. In addition Roger waters also stated in an interview that the song was written specifically for the movie but had contradicted himself in another quote as saying the song was "lying around" whatever the case the song helps set the stage by introducing pinks as an innocent boy running through a rugby field to a goalpost on the horizon. The goalpost symbolically is in the shape of the letter "H" which is slang for Heroin. The scene then cuts to Mickey Mouse wristwatch on a much older pink who seems to be in a catatonic/isolated state. I believe we are to draw a parallel between his isolation as a child running through a field and as an adult sitting in a room unable to hear the maid knocking heavily on the door. The song which plays before and after "Tigers" is titled "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot" by Vera Lynn. This song plays an important part in the lead up and conclusion of Tiger as it helps us understand the root of Pinks isolation as a fatherless child. The opening scene, a hallway perfectly sterile leading to a room where pink sits in isolation, describes a birth canal leading to a womb where a child sits in isolation. It is amazing to me how every detail in this opening scene is played out throughout the movie which some may suggest is just coincidence but I would have to disagree.

Modest Mouse – I Came as a Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock) Lyrics 18 years ago
It is my belief that our minds have a bug/loop in that we cannot process something that does not end. When we think about the end of space or something without limits the human mind fails to resolve the issue. This is the foudation of the lyrics we never die and never grow old because both dying and growing old have a start or an end pont, eternity has neither. From this we can agree that almost anything is possible... You can come as a rat, a cat, ice, a plumb, on earth, in space, on some planet 3million light years away 700 trilion years from now as fat because without limits anything is possible. It takes a long time but god dies to but not before hell stick it to you. According to what he has been told you cannot dye or grow old??? This is a calculated contradiction that suggests that god is an idea or theory not made of matter therfore it can grow old and die. In short... it takes along time for the idea of god to die but not before he is able to fool some of you into thinking he is the reason for your departure from conciousness. just my thoughts... which will die.

The White Stripes – My Doorbell Lyrics 18 years ago
Is it?
'Well, women and children and kisses'
or ...
'Well with me and chipin' me and kisses?'
I have no idea wtf chipn' means.

Also... 'Woman whatcha gonna do now, whatcha gonna do about it'

sang.as... 'Cause I'm tired of sittin' here, waitin', Woman whatcha gonna do now, whatcha gonna do about it

Also missing lyrics after ?... 'Nobody gotten away with it baby.
But how come it's so easy to you'

Interpretation:
Well, women and children and kisses
Not the man in my life I know
... not the typical relationship, maybe she wants(?) and he knows but cant get past the way she is... callous

And I been going to mystery misses
I respect the art of the show
... hes figured out her ways and has to resort to games(making him mysterious) to keep the show going

Take back what you said little girl
And while you're at it take yourself back too
...basically the game is up

'Cause I'm tired of sittin' here, waitin', Woman whatcha gonna do now, whatcha gonna do about it
... waiting for her to change her ways

Nobody gotten away with it baby.
But how come it's so easy to you
... hes never let anyone get to him this way so easily

You don't strike me as the type to be callous
But your words seem so obtuse
...wolf in sheep’s clothing

But then again I know you feel guilty
And you tell me you want me again
...she has obviously said she doesn’t need him so she is a bit unstable here

But I don't need any of your pity
I got plenty of my own friends
They're all above me
... friends usually see things lovers overlook

Make a sound and I'll make you feel right
Right at home, yeah
Yeah, right at home, yeah
...Hes weak for her so anything she says he just accepts... (or the obvious ring the bell and ill let you in...)

anyways if you have had a relationship(i hope you never do!) like this it is easy to interpret in this light, not that it is right, just my thoughts.

This song reminds me of a bright eyes song 'waste of paint' It seems she is exposing segments of her personal life through her lyrics. Something this heartfelt by so many offers some proof. The last segement is such a well written verse it can mean so much to so many because we all interpret the real meaning differently. It is almost ironic how many try so hard to find the authors true meaning when in the end she plainly says 'you'll use them however you want to'. After reading some of these posts its chilling how right she is.

If you like this song also listen to regina spektor and in particular a song called 'us'.

Green Day – Holiday Lyrics 19 years ago
I am from the USA and the greatest thing about this song is.... he is able to sing it to the world, sell out concerts, make tons of money on a so far everlasting career that's roots sprouted under the watchful eye of our massive voluntary Air/Armed forces funded by billions of sometimes misused tax dollars. He is able to do all this without fear or abandonment by the very government that affords and protects his freedoms that sponsors his ability to voice his opinion to the world. In no way am I a 'liberal' or 'conservative' or even care so much to discuss how how pulverizing music can be to troops or how bush has failed his people. Its AMERICA and if your from here you surely take for granted your freedoms except for 'the select few". Ya so what if green day has an opinion... some will follow some will criticize and some just like the beat. The main reason I like this song is because I heard a solider tell a reporter he was communicating to a group of Iraqis explaining how under the western laws we can criticize the very people that offer the services and leadership without any repercussions or fear of being tortured. They stood in awe gasping... some started to dance and the kids, not knowing really what was said, followed in by jumping and clapping in place. Pull all the lines off the globe and look at it from above... we all sit back and think we know what its all about... but really were just spoon fed typos with the luxury to voice our opinions.... I hope someday every country has a green day, and a George Bush, it will make the world a better place... if u know what I mean.

Part of this song is about jesus... and whats with everyone assuming all of gish is one big lsd trip? think for yourself for once. This song is about addiction in general.

All of your struggles beneath your disguise
Drink from the reasons that hold you alive
\'Til we\'re safe from the wounds of desire and pain
You must rise from the mounds of desire and change
- needs no explanation

All you see and all you breathe and all you cease to be
Taken down your only son and what he means to me
Your dream will be
To dream with me
- the addiction takes a stronghold, His views of god are explained in the song \'i am one\" He has swollowed everones views on god/religion... hes saying here that we all dont know shit about it and we will all sleep together.

Will you wait? Yes I will, I will wait for you
To cleanse your life takes more than time
Take what you want
Take all of it
- telling everyone dont wait because its to late. You can take whatever when i die.

Pink Floyd – Goodbye Cruel World Lyrics 19 years ago
To call ones interpretation "stupid" or classify yourself as "true floyd fans" has got to be the biggest oxymoron this side of "the wall". This website is designed not only to express the lyrical intention of the song author but to hear how others may relate it to his/her own journey through life. Because so many are "dead" set on getting it right i will add that this song is about the metaphorical and not the physical act of suicide. As you read the lyrics you cannot help but think it may have been the authors intent to draw a parallel between a catatonic state and suicide. What is incongruous to me is having so many people post how "stupid" it is to concider this song to be about suicide when it has not been conciderd in any post. Maybe by posting "stupid" and "true fan" before any mention of a misinterpretation you are telling us that at some point you were corrected. Be that as it may i do not think it stupid to concider this song about suicide as it does play an important part in the depth of the song.

Congratulations. To those that have singled out others for misinterpretation and for those that know it all. This song is about you. Congratulations to Korn for introducing Syd to a new generation… something we all struggle to bleed into shape. Should you be saying ‘We’Think’? Or ‘We feel’? After all this song is not about an individual’s point of view but a conforming state of mind. Once conformed can we speak in first person. ‘I don’t….. I don’t…. ‘ War? Well that’s just to ‘obvious’! Where are you Syd? Good bye!
