of Montreal – Death Isn't a Parallel Move Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It's actually "I must (deny) defy (defeat) this dark assignment. |
Destroyer – Watercolours into the Ocean Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Is this about that Italian serial killer "the Monster" or whatever he was called? I can't help but think it might be. |
The New Pornographers – Testament to Youth in Verse Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think it's about being young looking to music and not being able to find anything important. It may or may not be an attack on mainstream music and cliches. I think the last stanza might be refering to rebellious songs like "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "Fight For Your Right (To Party)". That's what comes to mind. |
of Montreal – Requiem for O.M.M.2 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
LeSerpentMascara, I 100% promise you that Bryan Poole, of Montreal guitarist and creator of the phrase, has said "of Montreal Mark II" on the Townhall. You can check if you don't believe me. |
of Montreal – The Past Is a Grotesque Animal Lyrics | 17 years ago |
You're right. It is parhelion. Also, definitely a "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" reference. Honey is described as "mousey" and referred to as a mouse/mousey girl throughout the play. In the movie version (starring Elizabeth Taylor) she seems delighted at George and Martha's fighting, and she drunkenly exclaims "Violence! Violence!" as if it's the best thing she's ever seen. |
of Montreal – Requiem for O.M.M.2 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Here's my theory: I think this song is about the girl from Montreal that broke Kevin's heart. To me the lyrics all point to that. My guess is that this is the last one he wrote about her and serves as sort of a send-off. Like "I won't forget you, but you're just not important to me anymore". Look at the last stanza. |
of Montreal – Labyrinthian Pomp Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The Destroyer theory is interesting. |
of Montreal – Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Soon after posting my original post, I concluded that this song is definitely about depression. The more I hear it, the more it sounds like depression and a chemical imbalance controlling how you feel (as opposed to using chemicals to enhance one's mood). Also, Heimdalsgate is where Kevin lived in Norway. |
of Montreal – Gronlandic Edit Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"all the party people dancing for the indie star but he's the worst faker by far but in the set i forget all of the beauty's wasted" Yeah, I still think he's calling himself the worst faker (i'm guessing when it comes to dancing) by far. Here's why I don't think it's about other bands, because it says "in the set i forget all the beauty's wasted". Why would he watch the sets of lame bands? To me it makes more sense if it's his set. |
of Montreal – Cato as a Pun Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah, I totally agree with pumpkinhed. Friends who no longer see eye-to-eye. |
of Montreal – Baby Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't think any song better represents crushes than this one. I mean, "there's no way that you're the person I imagine you to be" is pretty much as real as it gets. |
of Montreal – Psychotic Feeling Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"And the wallpaper's peeling" - is that a reference to the Yellow Wallpaper? I thought that line was kind of lacking, until I realized what it might refer to. Thoughts? |
The New Pornographers – Ballad of a Comeback Kid Lyrics | 17 years ago |
A song about Bush coming from any country wouldn't surprise me, however Clinton seems kind of irrelevent. |
of Montreal – It's a Very Starry Night Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sometimes I like to sing it to myself as "it's a very stare decisis". |
of Montreal – Gronlandic Edit Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I was also thinking the line about the indie star referred to him, but I thought maybe he meant he was faking dancing. Or maybe just fake in general, but that struck me as odd. I really like this one. More on this later. |
of Montreal – Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think it could be about drugs, but it's probably about depression (chemical imbalance). It's so inspecific that either is highly plausible. In Greek mythology, Prometheus was a god that gave fire to the mortals. As punishment he spent the rest of eternity (I think?) bound to a rock, where an eagle would come everyday to eat his liver. At night it would grow back, so the eagle could eat it the next day. So, I think the title implies that Kevin feels like he is stuck in an endless painful cycle. And he's in Norway. |
of Montreal – So Begins Our Alabee Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Actually, the album came out about 4 or 5 months after the Alabee (the kid, not the song) did. Also, a friend of mine used to work at American Eagle (circa summer 2005) and he said they played it there. |
The New Pornographers – Sing Me Spanish Techno Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yes! I've seen the video! I loved it. I loved that it was unpredictable and light-hearted. And I love drag queens. And to the newer NP fans: This song is good, but there are some songs that are way better. If you haven't yet, listen to Chump Change, July Jones, and Letter From an Occupant. Actually, listen to it all. Pretty much all NP is good. |
The New Pornographers – Your Daddy Don't Know (Toronto cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is my least favorite New Pornographers song. Ever. |
of Montreal – The Actor's Opprobrium Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't think he's refering to Jeunet, because "Jean" in French is pronounced similarly to "John". He sings "Gene". |
of Montreal – Chrissy Kiss the Corpse Lyrics | 18 years ago |
mwalk, he's also told stories about messing with old ladies for fun. Someone should compile a list of all the Chrissie stories he's told at shows. I think that there is no real story, and Kevin just likes to make things up. That's fine with me. I like stories. |
Superchunk – Detroit Has a Skyline Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I heard the acoustic version first and fell in love with it. Then I got Here's Where The Strings Come In and heard the electric version, which I like about a billion times more. The acoustic version is for when I'm sad and the album version is for when I feel like going crazy. True love. |
of Montreal – Katie and Caroline Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm guessing that Kevin has two nieces named Katie and Caroline, who are not sisters. Uncle Nina = Kevin's wife. Uncles Gonzo and Mouse probably = Kevin and David. But which is which? I love this song. Princesses Princesses Princesses! |
of Montreal – Montreal Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I completely agree. This song is so sad, without being whiny. It's amazing, and it breaks my heart every time. |
of Montreal – Eros' Entropic Tundra Lyrics | 18 years ago |
^ I agree. |
of Montreal – How Lester Lost His Wife Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love this one a lot. It's so nice. |
of Montreal – So Begins Our Alabee Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song seems to be about his new fatherhood. I think the odessy might alabee's life or kevin's life as a father. If the chyrsallis is breaking, he's evolving to another stage, and the super-ego represents the moral part of the mind (which is being activated). Basically, it seems like his life was sad and not so good, but now he's glad to have her in his life and he doesn't want to let her down. |
of Montreal – Requiem for O.M.M.2 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't know what of Montreal purists there are out there, but I do know this. OMM2 definitely = of Montreal Mark II. "of Montreal Mark I" was coined by the late bp helium to describe the first line-up of of Montreal. Mark II ended between Aldhil's Arboretum and Satanic Panic. of Monteal has lots of songs that sound happy but are actually really sad. So, it's not that stange. More like wonderful. That's why they're my favorite. |
of Montreal – Let's Do Everything for the First Time Forever Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's on Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies. I love this song. It's nice. |
Built to Spill – You Were Right Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think he's just responding to the songs. I guess he thinks Bob Marley is wrong, but everyone else is right. |
of Montreal – Will You Come and Fetch Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
sounds like drugs. |
of Montreal – Oslo in the Summertime Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Also, part of the Sunlandic Twins was recorded in Oslo in the summer. |
of Montreal – Lysergic Bliss Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think that is a fantastic love song and that drugs are just the overall theme of Satanic Panic, which is woven into almost every song. |
of Montreal – Chrissy Kiss the Corpse Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Kevin said that this song is about what happens if you experiement with chrystal meth. However, in an interview he said that this song came about when he imagined his sister at her son's funeral, trying to kiss the corpse. |
of Montreal – The Actor's Opprobrium Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Gene Genet made one film. It was about two male prisoners who fall in love. He also wrote many plays and stories which have been turned into movies. |
of Montreal – Rapture Rapes the Muses Lyrics | 18 years ago |
At the of Montreal concert, they started with this song. |
The New Pornographers – Ballad of a Comeback Kid Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I didn't mean that Canadians couldn't write songs about the US, I just didn't see why a Canadian would care about an American politician. Anyway, I think this song might be about high school and trying to fit in, pretending, and being a little fake. "recite your lines and i'll quote scriptures". The chorus to me sounds like it's about trying to look cool, but being uncomfortable in the situation. The idea of being "crippled in someone else's shoes" sounds to me like pretending to be someone you're not. "watch your step as you step down from the podium returned from the war to a hero's welcome what's more you just had to win" sounds like a sports superstar to me. "blazing new trails waving goodbye to the audience held captive the crowd was inactive it made such perfect sense" sounds like a graduation and having to sit through speeches that you don't care about. Everyone else's awards and plans don't matter to you, just like yours don't matter to anyone else. I think that's it. Anyone else? |
The New Pornographers – Letter from an Occupant Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I really like the oil idea. I hadn't thought of that, but I think it makes sense. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out this line: "for the love of a god you said not a letter from an occupant" and I think that if it were written in a book it would look like this: "For the love of [a god]", you said, "Not a letter from an occupant!" If this is the case, then"For the love of a god" isn't accusing her of breaking it off for religious reasons, it's an exclamation, like "For the love of God!" or "For the love of Buddah!" or something of that nature. What is a letter from an occupant? Usually if you get a letter addressed to "occupant" it is something generic and pretty ordinary. I think that a letter from an occupant would represent something unexpected, possibly a complaint. Nobody expects to get a letter from an occupant, and if I were to get a letter from an occupant, I wouldn't know how to react. Maybe that's what it means? |
Beulah – My Horoscope Said It Would Be a Bad Year Lyrics | 19 years ago |
i think it's a little bit sucidal, actually. |
of Montreal – Good Morning Mr. Edminton Lyrics | 19 years ago |
So he kidnapped some men and let them go in exchange for a job...awesome, brilliant. |
Guided by Voices – I'll Name You The Flame That Crys Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song seems to be about raising his daughter, who apparantly cried a lot. |
Guided by Voices – Everybody Thinks I'm A Raincloud (When I'm Not Looking) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think a lot of this song is also about being misunderstood. |
Guided by Voices – Choking Tara Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I am really curious as to why this song is called "Choking Tara". Anyone else? |
Mates of State – An Experiment Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I very much agree with shazzer. I would also like to note that Kori is older than Jason. And I believe she sings the line "i'm always older". |
Superchunk – Rainy Streets Lyrics | 19 years ago |
These lyrics are wrong. Here are the correct lyrics: As two lanes slicken And the clouds they hug that ridge just stickin' When the wind that whistles knocks the panes from old windows Down rainy streets There's a light that meets the ground In the warm rush of blood to the head fights the sick that's been around When bags of icy knives pull hard down on the mercury And winter's whip of cold kills everything in a nursery Down rainy streets There's a light that meets the ground In the warm rush of blood to the head fights the sick that's been around |
Superchunk – Green Flowers, Blue Fish Lyrics | 19 years ago |
You gave me the keys, but not to your home The porcelain locks, they just wouldn't hold Against my shoulder, against the cold They gave right in and went on in What a nice way to phrase "i broke into your house", although it could be metaphorical, "your home" refering to her heart or something. This song is so sad and beautiful. I love it. It is definitely my favorite Superchunk song. |
Superchunk – Hyper Enough Lyrics | 19 years ago |
If it weren't for those (laughter guns??) you're riding on I always thought that it was "master plans" in place of "laughter guns". There is a great chance that I have been thinking the wrong thing, but that is what i always hear and it makes sense to me. |
Superchunk – Driveway to Driveway Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is beautiful. It makes me think of skate boarding/ers. |
The Oranges Band – Success Lyrics | 19 years ago |
And, yeah, maybe it's me. Focused on the sea And not the fish in the seas or the birds and the leaves. But always the trees. I think these lines mean that he looks at the big picture, and not the details. |
The Oranges Band – My Street Lyrics | 19 years ago |
In the second line, feel = feet. Refreneces and connections to other songs: Feet - also used in Fins For Our Feet (sidenote, to me feet in songs represents one's true self) ghosts - the song Ghosts or All the Ghosts in Your House (i'm not sure of the title) That's it for now. |
