"When I'm losing my control, the city spins around You're the only one who knows, you slow it down" this is quite possibly my favorite part of the song... and i know it's really obvious what it means but i just feel like this is yet another instance of words that you hear in a song and you're like, 'yeah, that's exactly how it is.' i have a high-stress job and i tend to keep things very close to the chest and quiet about it so not many people realize how bad it can get. my husband gets it. he's the first one to stop and just hold me when i'm hurrying about and internally listing the things i have to do. it's amazing how easily he understands and how quickly he can make it all subside... incredible song. |

i agree that this song is definitely not intended to be about god. not only did isaac himself SAY that he doesn't believe in god, but god is only briefly mentioned in the very first verse... but anyway, i feel like this song revisits the same frustrations, fears, and vulnerability that were shown in "over my head." it seems like it's entirely about a feeling of abandonment by one's support group in a time of need. this song actually seems to me to be a bit of a sequel, because now not only is the voice abandoned but help returns to him too late. "Why'd you have to wait? Where were you? Where were you? Just a little late You found me, you found me" also, to me this song seems to dip its toe into the subject of suicide... maybe i'm wrong. |

i think the final lines "i am giving up for you" is supposed to mean giving up sadness (half-empty glasses), the desire for something new (greener grasses), and the chase (making passes) because the person for whom those things are being given up is worth more. as in, i'm giving these up, because i want you. if this were a negative song about settling there wouldn't be lines like: "what if your eyes close before mine" (the dread of not being the first to die in a marriage...), "what if you lose yourself sometimes and i'll be the one to find you safe in my heart" (if someone's talking about settling do you really think there would be a whole lot of pure love stuff thrown in?) if this were a song about staying with someone because of a baby there wouldn't be lines like: "what if our baby comes in after nine"... obviously not talking to an unborn child. i just feel like this song is entirely meant to be romantic. it's about lifelong commitment and marriage and all those questions and worries you have when you enter into such a commitment. it's absolutely beautiful and tugs at the heartstrings and it's one of those songs that you listen to and wonder why it wasn't written years ago |

okay... i thinke veryone's getting a little too heated over this one song. i mean, it's by snow patrol. you may not think it's their best song ever, but i think the fact that we've all stopped by the lyrics for this song means we like snow patrol. so why are we ripping into fellow fans for liking a song by a band we also enjoy? who cares if they like it? they're welcome to like whatever they please. and if they want to call them 'the patrol'... we may think it's silly and cheesey, but if that's what they wanna call 'em, so be it. you can't stop 'em. everyone needs to just play nice, now. |

to me this song is about a guy that got dumped by this girl he was crazy about. he prolly wanted to marry her and all but she wasn't really looking for a forever type of relationship, so they broke up. and now he's in so much pain that he's traveling around trying to forget about her. he's dreaming about her and feeling like he's alone save for the heavens and his surroundings. he keeps coming back to the fact that he wanted their relationship to mean SOMETHING and he kinda worries that it meant nothing to her. so he's hoping she at least remembers him from time to time. |

| this song reminds me of those times when you're totally pissed off at the world. when you feel like you're alone and that no one can help you. you get all pissed off if someone even tries and you just want to be left alone. so you fight off anyone that comes near you. you're sitting in a room "with a gun and a pack of sandwiches" and wait for someone to dare and try to reach you. it's one of those "back the hell off" songs.... i heart it | |

| i think this is a song about a husband and wife who've gotten older ("birds are leaving over autumn's ending" - they're entering the winter of their lives) and it may be sinking in that one of them will die first. that one maybe of them will die when they're laying in bed together perhaps after making love, naked, and just holding eachother... i do agree that it is also saying that they're leaving this world with nothing but the love they have... it's a perdy song | |
