such a cool damn song. it's the first i've heard of this guy.

Elliott Smith – Everything's Okay Lyrics 18 years ago
Does sound like prostitution, yes. And a guy that's a little too attached. Great song, though I guess the original is better. But I could never find a better quality version of it, this one sounds a lot better.

Elliott Smith – Abused Lyrics 18 years ago
very good job transcribing this (whoever did). the music elliott was making in the last days really was something else. if that double album had ever been finished, i think we would have literally one of the great albums of all time.

Elliott Smith – No More Lyrics 18 years ago
Though I like Either/Or better, this is a good tune. One thing I notice about Elliott's unreleased stuff, it is much darker.

Elliott Smith – Pretty Mary K (Dead Imagination) (Either/Or demos) Lyrics 18 years ago
I really like this one better than the Figure 8 version. That's saying a lot too. I have a playlist of 23 Either/Or Demos (from Elliott Smith B-Sides website) and it's great listening to these unploished tracks. Gives them a eerie quality, almost. Just the way the sound.

Elliott Smith – I Figured You Out Lyrics 19 years ago
Great song, I have a live version on my computer.

The Dissociatives – Forever and a Day Lyrics 19 years ago
Pure pop song, that's for sure. But notice the use of the word "Pure." This is really a great song, something everyone can enjoy. I think it's great when a band goes ambitiously dark (like Radiohead) but this is very ambitious as well.

The Dissociatives – Horror With Eyeballs Lyrics 19 years ago
Seems to be about his arthritis, how he couldn't get out of bed for long stretches of time.

"All of this time I was dead, limbless in bed"

Wilco – More Like The Moon Lyrics 19 years ago
Definatley a beautiful song. Though it does sound like the character in the song is being left for someone else.

"You say but no, I've found one. There's another one out there for you."

Wilco – Kicking Television Lyrics 19 years ago
Very cool track. Weird how Wilco's b-sides are better than most band's album tracks. :-)

The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Super-Sonic Lyrics 19 years ago
No explanation here, I just want to say that opening riff is fuckin' awesome.

Agreed, I love these guys. They're playing a small venue near me, so I'm extremely happy.

Great song about kicking someone's ass. Nice.

Bright Eyes – Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and to Be Loved) Lyrics 19 years ago
Sounds to me like Conor (or the main character, whatever) gets really drunk and stumbles through the city, noting everything that disgusts him before passing out and ending up in a hospital bed. I mean, it don't dound that deep, but it's fucking genius.

Bright Eyes – Bowl of Oranges Lyrics 19 years ago
Just a great song. Can't get enough of it. I like listening to it first thing when I wake up.

Bright Eyes – You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will. Lyrics 19 years ago
I love the beginning (and end of False Advertising). The crowd is cheering, he puts down his guitar, he leaves the loud crowd for a quiet room and sings a nice personal song. Just a nice touch, really.

Bright Eyes – A Song to Pass the Time Lyrics 19 years ago
I really love that toy piano Conor is messing around with in the background at some points of the song. As far as the song, it seems pretty clear that it's about feeling sorry for others. Feeling useless because you aren't helping others. Even if that feeling is completely illogical.

Elliott Smith – Single File Lyrics 19 years ago
I actually like that explaination, Tom.

Wilco – Summer Teeth Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, I love that line. I think it's one of the best lines in any Wilco song.

"He hits snooze twice before he dies"

Maybe a play on how people don't take advantage of their time. This guy inadvertantly chose to live his last few hours on a bed, asleep. There's a great bit of black comedy there. :-)

Wilco – Via Chicago Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this is just a great song, telling a great (and very depressing) story. You see, not all songs are literal about the artists that write them. Some songs tell great stories. Guy kills wife, skips town. He goes in to hiding, but finds he can't live that way. So he decides he's coming home, whether he gets caught or not.

As far as him saying "I Dreamt about killing you" at the beginning, I believe the song is just beginning with a fantasy. Then it happens. Then he's in hiding. Then, obviously, he's coming home.

Forgive me for giving such a simple explaination. :-)

Silverchair – My Favourite Thing Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is so romantic in such a different and rather offbeat way that it just gets better with every listen.

Silverchair – Steam Will Rise Lyrics 19 years ago
this is very typical of the album. the lyrics are like a welcome into daniel's medicated fog, his anorexia, and what he seems to feel is the death of any personality he had in the first place. it's so obvious in this song that he feels like he's lost a rather large part of himself. this due to the typical record execs and such, but near the end he really stands up stern and says, 'i won't be led.' as if to say, 'i know what you're doing, and i'm not going to let you take advantage of me anymore.' this theory also makes sense because of how early he became famous. i believe he was 14 when silverchair hit it big

Elliott Smith – A Fond Farewell Lyrics 19 years ago
seems, like someone said before, its about elliott saying goodbye to a friend, or habit (he did get clean, right?) i think this song has a rather amazing amount of hope to it, its just too bad that people take it for another depressing song about drugs.

submissions
Elliott Smith – Strung Out Again Lyrics 19 years ago
i love how all the replies to the other elliott songs on this website talk about how the songs are about drugs, yet there's only four replies to a song called "strung out again" hmmm....

The Walkmen – What's In It For Me Lyrics 19 years ago
The Walkmen have a gift for very simple lyrics that work extremly well. The whole Bows & Arrows album seems like the story of a guy that's living an unstable, partying lifestyle. About his lost loves, lost oppurtunities, and lost memories. I think this song begins that trip very well as the first track on the album

submissions
The Walkmen – Thinking of a Dream I had Lyrics 19 years ago
This sounds like a character in the song is waiting for a train (Well, duh) and thinking about the girl that tried to yell some sense in to him. (For any reason really) And now he's thinking, at the last moment, "Shit, she was right."

My interpretation only.

Wilco – A Shot in the Arm Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's odd that someone thinks this is about addiction. The 'shot in the arm' stuff seems to be more metaphor than straight truth. I don't know, just my opinion. Great song though.

submissions
Wilco – Far, Far Away Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a great 'Being There' track, it's hard to beleive that nobody has posted about it. It just seems to be about missing someone, really.

Wilco – Spiders (Kidsmoke) Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the lines

"This recent rash of kidsmoke
All these telescopic poems
It's good to be alone"

May be a bit of a jab at the quality (or lack of) in music today.

Rilo Kiley – It's a Hit Lyrics 19 years ago
as far as the political part of this song, i think its excellent. i think it just depends on what side youre on, so to speak :-) this song has a lot of anger in it, but internal. its like something you think, not say. all the things you stop yourself from blurting out, then they all just come over you and you explode.

Elliott Smith – Everything Means Nothing to Me Lyrics 19 years ago
i absolutely love the scene-setting in this song, it really is captivating.

Elliott Smith – Can't Make a Sound Lyrics 19 years ago
am i the only one that sees a little bit of a political statement in this line?

"spinning the world like a toy top, till there's a ghost in every town"

maybe its just me, but that hit me most out of anything else in the song

the simple instrumentation in this song is so great. it just nails the song in to your mind.

Grandaddy – He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot Lyrics 19 years ago
I say this song has a rather simple meaning, and that it's more of a story than a metaphor. Grandaddy used this album to tell stories set in a slightly depressing future, and I think this ties in to all of that. And maybe, just maybe, it is about the loss of humanity in this future age. (As we're already seeing it our age) I have this odd feeling that there's more behind this though.

Grandaddy – So You'll Aim Toward The Sky Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree, RBI. I think this album is really one of the great concept albums ever made. This ending is so fitting of the album, it just seems almost surreal. As for the song itself, it seems like a big release for someone living in a chaotic existense and them finally leaving it behind, with the narrator being the friend/family left behind.

Grandaddy – Lost on Yer Merry Way Lyrics 19 years ago
Really a classic Grandaddy song, as the person above said, 'beautiful.' It's really straight forward to me, my interpretation being that it's the thoughts of the writer riding through the night, feeling very lost and a little lonely. I think a lot of it invloves that time alone you have with yourself, just sitting in silence and looking out the window, thinking about things like mortality. (Which you manage to avoid thinking about when in a crowd)

That's what it means to me, anyhow.
