Hey Mercedes – Go On Drone Lyrics 16 years ago
Good call, kenobi. I think you pretty much nailed it. Definitely seems like it's about an ex the singer's still friends with and sees socially semi-regularly. Possibly an unrequited love - maybe the singer had confessed to having feelings for this 'Sarah' and the feeling wasn't mutual or she's just a really close friend he can let off steam with.

Definitely has a sense of longing and frustration, finished off with a sense of resignation and futility. Almost seems like a cat-and-mouse sort of setup where the girl is tormenting the singer by admiring how cute he is when he tries to fight off his affections.

The song itself is amazing. Right around the 3 minute mark, the beauty of its sonic simplicity just ends perfectly. Amazing way to end the album. Hats off to Bob Nanna and company. Pity more people haven't taken notice of the late great Hey Mercedes.

Nada Surf – Are You Lightning? Lyrics 16 years ago
how has no one commented on this? This song is amazing... definitely a love song with a sort of country diner melody. But it's really amazing with out being cheesy. Seems as though the speaker's just in awe of how awesome the object of his affection is and is just marvelling at her doing the littlest things, beyond that I can't say. Anyone get a better take on it?

The New Amsterdams – Bad Liar Lyrics 16 years ago
Awesome song, very catchy. CloseToHome10 pretty much summed it up very well.

I think it's "That's hardly a new disclosure" instead of "Nothing I can do to dispose you" and "razor wit" instead of "razors".

I think it also is about how they'd still end up seeing each other and hanging out outside the band as I'm from Lawrence, KS and I've gone to a number of TGUK side project shows and there's usually some other member of TGUK in the audience. Plus they mentioned the Replay Lounge (a local venue) which was awesome since it's where I first saw the New Ams and they played this one.

Dashboard Confessional – Heaven Here Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok seriously, I hate to talk about Further on an awesome song by Dashboard but does it really matter whether FSF was a "Christian band"? They still kicked ass. Even if they didn't identify as such, all its members ARE Christian or at least believe in God. They like most subtle Christian bands are uncomfortable with being marketed and sold solely based on their faith and don't want their audience to be prejudiced by their identity and people's oft negative, holier-than-thou perception of Christianity - admirable. Now that being said, the Christian influence definitely shines in some of Further's lyrics if you choose to interpret them in such a manner. And by extension, this song strikes me as being interpreted in at least 2 if not more manners: 1) Sex/love and 2) spiritual. The first exhibited in the closeness and intimacy of a couple that is genuine and totally in tune with one another and who feel that their love is unique. The second shown through an authentic faith and humility to God and truly seeking Him out as opposed to the countless who are only going through the motions or casting down judgment, fire and brimstone. He speaks as though he were one of the last true believers and that those who fake being religious are a perversion of that pure faith and though they may triumph in this world, the truly faithful are eternal and will know Heaven personally and this is cause for celebration and intimate bonding to your fellow believer. Of course Chris has his own meaning and I'm just speculating, but those are some of the possibilities I get out of it.

*rather than "rains"

Sage Francis – Bridle Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok I think it's "reins" (like the reins on a horse) rather than reins because it matches the bridle imagery. But it's really genius because "rains/reins" works for both the horse imagery of making the wife something of a bound-up trophy and for the storm imagery associated with the building tension and pressure that will break when the rainstorm hits. Very clever line.

Thursday – Running From The Rain Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok, for the whisper part at the end, where he supposedly says "glitters in the sun", that last word is so hard to make out! I've listened to it several times and I can hear it as "sun", "dark" and "night". when I listen really close it sounds the least like "sun" even though "sun would make the most sense (rain/puddles glistening in the sunlight after the storm clears). However I think it could be "dark" "night" because it seems to be in an urban setting and city lights are also quite capable of being reflected by rain/puddles (I'm picturing an overlook of a city near some railroad track, the light of either the city or moon/stars being reflected). Also, as for the younger kids part. Maybe to modify GeoffK's interpretation, it could be an understanding of the mistakes the dead friend made in life that the narrator tries to educate others to prevent the tragedy form reoccurring. Of course this works in the literal sense too, with the narrator telling kids not to play near the tracks because of the danger it poses and the personal haeartache he's felt over losing his friend when he was in their shoes. I don't see the narrator so much "saving" the kids as "educating" them of the danger and persuading them to play somewhere else.

mewithoutYou – Nice and Blue (Pt. Two) Lyrics 17 years ago
Awesome song, I'm already hooked on it and can't wait for the new album. If I were to interpret it, I'd say it's about doubt. Especially the middle portion. The first part seems to be about profiting for yourself but sinning (the stolen honey) and running from the consequences ("I'm lucky I got out alive"; "No place on earth I can run from the wrongs I've done"). Then the middle comes and it seems to express his certainty of faith on a longshot (maybe an analogy for his personal faith) in the form of betting on a horse who seems to be a longshot - 17:1 aren't the best odds but lead to a huge payout in the event that the horse wins - which the speaker expresses faith in it's capability that despite it being a longshot he is certain it will win. The irony comes in that though the horse (his faith) starts out strong and winning, the further the race goes on, the worse for the wear the horse is till it's at the rear of the back and that the odds were, in fact, accurately justified. He loses all he has to the commonwealth and the track, perhaps representing faith the trap of losing one's faith and only trusting in death and taxes to be certain - or in this case luck and taxes as the track might better be represented by luck/happenstance, etc. The city being swallowed up by forests has me a bit stumped but maybe an analogy of how our expectations can be inverted (since cities normally bulldoze over forests). That argument can be strengthened by the fact that he expects to find a girl like his mom and yet still is alone and searching for one. He finally concludes on the emptiness of worldly pleasures and how his wicked nature and the wrongs he's committed will only tarnish the purity of grace and would rather be forgotten than be remembered in a shameful light. Just my take on it, any thoughts?

The Beautiful Mistake – Burned Out And Broken In Lyrics 17 years ago
Awesome song. The new Beautiful Mistake was a bit more of an acquired taste considering I fell in love with Light A Match-era TBM, but this Split proves they're just as on top of their game as ever. That bass line is incredible. I think the title's pretty descriptive of the meaning. Full of imagery of being exhausted, broken, tired and the doubt that can arise from such weariness and yet there is hope that things will improve. Personally I think it's an address to God about how he can't keep trying to live for himself because his life lacks meaning and becomes a tired weariness he can no longer run from.

The Gloria Record – The Immovable Motorist Lyrics 18 years ago
This song really strikes me as losing your soul as you grow. It's a really good analogy, the driving. People used to walk everywhere and thus when they went somewhere it was an investment in effort, a journey. Now with cars and other technological improvements our lives are easier but we begin to lose our vitality. In the song, look how you can become a different person behind the wheel. You start driving just because its easy and convenient and you can do it but do you ever step out into the world and explore what you are seeing? Hence "all the wasted life in my car". "I get angry so easy..." I think anybody who's driven long enough will find that a great many people turn into someone else behind the wheel, often becoming angry over the slightest things. "The suburban sprawl" and "even lines" carries this image further in that while the quality of life is going up and we have greater control over our lives we're losing our souls due to our separation from the natural world and each other or becoming spiritually tired "And if you don't feel lonely, then you can't feel anything at all"

Thursday – Last Call (Demo) Lyrics 18 years ago
I loved this song, pity it's not on the new album, maybe they'll add it to a compilation or pull a Jet Black New Year with it and throw it on some EP or special edition...Hopefully it'll resurface. Anyway, does anyone else hear "pattern smile" instead of "parent's smile"? Works either way either creating imagery with "parents smile" or describing the sterotypical scene with "pattern smile". I'm guessing it's about facades of happiness when you're falling apart on the inside...

The Appleseed Cast – Woodland Hunter (Part I) Lyrics 18 years ago
Amazing song, Chris's vocals ARE the melody in the first half and then it just bursts out of the gates for the last verse. Incredible to say the least and very good lyrics but it's too late in the night for me to delve into meaning beyond the intimate binding of life and death, cold and warm, comfort and pain. They're tied together so close yet the question is posed whether the two can exist at the same time.

Great song. BusRoof, you can find this one on their new Split EP with Ettison Clio. Very melodic though this particular song doesn't strike me as "screamo". That era was back with Light A Match... More apologetic... Like he's admitting his faults and shortcomings and lack of value.

Sense Field – Fun Never Ends Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song! I'd say it's about growing up and the feeling of invincibility that you have when you're young but how that illusion gets shattered when someone you know (who's young) dies and the feeling of shock that hits you. The atmospherics of this song are incredible makes me think of those beautiful summer nights driving around town around sunset and late at night. Song's probably my favorite off of Tonight And Forever.

Desaparecidos – Man and Wife, the Former (Financial Planning) Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song, especially when taken with the 2nd part, Damaged Goods. Great depiction of the traps of marriage and falling into habit and routine and losing the magic you feel when you're with that special someone.

Are they actually broken up or not? I mean Saddle Creek still has them listed on their website. Granted, it's pretty much a side project for them and they haven't really focused on Desa in awhile (to my knowledge). I keep hearing either they're broken up or they have new material for an album called Payola but are awaiting Conor's lyrics/vocals. This would make sense considering Conor's schedule has been so hectic with his focus on and constant touring with Bright Eyes. I'd find it hard to believe that with Bush being re-elected Conor could contain his political outrage which adds to the argument that they're just dormant for the moment. I'm REALLY hoping they put out some more material (word on the Saddle Creek message boards said the new stuff is/was supposed to be released in late 2005 or early 2006, but who knows?). If I had to choose between Bright Eyes and Desa, I'd take Desa any day.

Mineral – February Lyrics 18 years ago
Mineral's songs always seemed to easily translate to a Christian perspective for me (and yes, I'm a Christian), however, for the most part, they avoid any direct mention and hint more at ideas and notions associated with Christianity. Take Mineral from whatever perspective you like though, your interpretation is every bit as valid as any one else's. At very least I would say Mineral seemed like a "spiritual" band.

Further Seems Forever – Light Up Ahead Lyrics 18 years ago
First and foremost to those complaining about Jon's lyrics...Jason left the band while they were recording this album (without doing any lyrics or vocals for them). FSF was left in a pretty bad situation but then they ran into Jon Bunch right after Sense Field disbanded. So he came in and laid down lyrics for music that he had no input on. I'd say you have to cut him some slack for having to fabricate lyrics off the top of your head knowing the studio deadlines and the fact that you'll be touring right after with these songs. In addition, I think Jon's lyrics have depth in their simplicity. There's nothing wrong with simplicity (goes for the guy complaining about Sparta too, who have depth in their crypticness). While it's a shame that FSF can't hold a lead singer down (happened to them back in Strongarm too), every singer they've had has done a great job for the band. And the music is always there too, amazing no matter who's up front. Every lead singer has been above par in my opinion.

But the song is amazing. FSF was a slow burn for me. Took me awhile to get into, and then even longer to get into Jon Bunch with FSF. But if you keep listening and focusing on the music and the simplicity of the lyrics, it really grows on you. I love this song's optimism; you can feel it in the instrumentals. The song might seem simple at first, but it's filled with incredibly deep notions of grace and redemption. Especially in the Christian perspective. Just remember, when times seem dark, there's a light up ahead...

As Cities Burn – The Widow Lyrics 18 years ago
I think DarkerShadeofWinter's got it right; I don't think this song questions God but rather the speaker's Earthly father. In fact, it's God's grace and natural goodness that keeps the speaker from feeling any ill will towards his father - he still loves him despite the fact that the father has obviously had premarital sex (and alludes to maybe him having affairs). Definitely about sex as the term "bury sons" is more of an agricultural reference as opposed to a funeral reference. It's making an analogy to planting seeds in various women and the laack of care the father has for the children he fathers through his various sexual encounters (did you even for a second hesitate in the doorway?). The tracks-up-the-arms image introduces a drug element to the scenario indicating the father was also under the influence of drugs and it is either the addiction, the affairs, or both that led the father to leave his wife, the speaker, and the speaker's brothers in '89. Good image with the Mother's heart breaking like the water inside her when she's giving birth. And despite the seemingly worthless character of the father, the song has an amazing message of forgiveness and love despite every offense imaginable with the last line:

But I believe there is something here to be learned of grace,
'cause I can't help but love you, even with a heart that breaks like the promises you made

Emery – The Weakest Lyrics 18 years ago
Amazing song...I know this sounds very vague, but to me it seems like it's about indecision and being excluded. Seems it's about a couple who are wanting to leave a group of people behind because that group is blaming one or both of them for their troubles. But there's probably a more accurate meaning to it. Anyway, when I listen to it, it sounds like:

"peaceful passing" instead of "peace for passing"

Both phrases seem to work well in the context of the song but that's just what it sounds like to me.

It sounds like he says "plans that we have made" during the chorus rather than "friends we have made" but again, either meaning works.

Lastly, in the 2nd/final chorus you should probably list the entire backing vocals on at lesat one of those, so basically jsut add "(The finger and the gun)" after "We'll leave no trace" and "(To be the only one)" after "of plans/friends that we have made". Other than that, looks good.

This Awkward Silence – Save It For The Fire Lyrics 18 years ago
It's an amazing song, hope these guys start getting (modestly) bigger for their good work. Anyway seems like this song is about a guy who's in love with a girl who's close (as a confidante) to him and tells him things that he doesn't want to hear so he's put in an awkward position: He's attracted to her and she's intimate with him but the things she tells him break his heart. Hence lines like "your words choke me like razor", "such a disappointment 'cause I thought that I could trust you". In the end he decides to break away because he either doesn't want to think less of her or he's fed up with what he's learned of her. That's my take on it though I haven't put that much thought into it...

Thursday – For The Workforce, Drowning Lyrics 18 years ago
My favorite line: "Please someone! Teach me how to swim!"...
I think that the day-to-day drudgery of the working class and the 9/11 analogies aren't mutually exclusive. It's describing how the working class get caught in the routine like everyone's said and their life disappears before them as they're forced into their cookie-cutter jobs, kept in cubicles, never being more than a number in the system. And then tragedy strikes, such as 9/11 and the worker realizes their life has wasted away and is near ending and desperately searches for a meaning to their life before it ends (almost an argument that man has to have a spiritual side of some form to add purpose and meaning to life - though I don't think that'd be Geoff's intended message). I think the ending has a dual meaning:

Obviously one way to go would be the 9/11 road where the routine has been torn down by extraordinary catastrophic events and that these middle-class workers are desperate to be rescued as the job is meaningless and they just want to hang on to life ("don't let me drown").

The other way to go involves a more common image. Sometimes there's an analogy made that a company is like a ship. Company's doing well, everyone's doing there job/routine. Then all of a sudden the company is going bankrupt/out of business, and there's masses of layoffs of middle class workers who have few marketable skills. The workers see the company/ship is sinking and are desperate for a rescue (via the government saving the company like they did when all the airlines were faced with brankruptcy) or for some other company/ship to pick them up as they have no skills to keep them financially afloat (which explains the line "Please someone! Teach me how to swim!") - the speaker's desperate for someone to help them stay above the waters of financial debt before he/she too is laid off from the company and drowns in debt. Tells a lot about the dime-a-dozen middle class workers who work hard only to be replaced and fnd themselves obsolete with no skills to support themselves or their families.

Great song by Geoff, even if it did take me a bit longer to get into War All The Time than Full Collapse.

Taking Back Sunday – Eleven Lyrics 19 years ago
AMazing song though for some reason I skipped by it the first couple times I heard it but then I actually sat down and took the time to look up the lyrics and I think it's phenomenal. Ok, it's Antonio singing lead of course. Not John, not Adam, not Jesse.

I heard that Jesse used to play bass for TBS but again I CAN'T VERIFY THAT OR THE FOLLOWING INFO, it's merely the general consensus of all the searching I've done (which is a fair amount). TBS has two albums, Tell All Your Friends and Where You Want To Be. Before that, they released a FIVE-song self-titled demo (which is pretty hard to find but you can download it fairly easy) with demo versions of Great Romances, Blue Channel, Bike Scene, and Head Club as well as the acoustic track Your Own Disaster. That demo was with the Tell All Your Friends line-up: Adam, John, Ed, Shaun, and Mark. Before THAT demo, there was a SIX-song self-titled demo (even harder to find than the 5-song demo but again, relatively easy to download). You can find Lullaby, Go On, Eleven, Summer Stars, The Things We'll Never Know, and Lost And Found on that demo. It's the only tracks I know of that have Antonio as he left after that and Adam got moved to lead vocals. At some point Adam was the bass player. My only question is:

who's the backing vocalist on this song and on Summer Stars. Summer Stars sounds like Jesse to me but I could be totally wrong on that. But Eleven almost sounds like it's Adam on backing vocals. I dunno...Anyone know?

Typically I'm not a big fan of acoustic but there's exceptions. This one's on my good list, though as we can see doing a cover gets you all kinds of crap from fans of the original band. oh yeah, and xKissxHerxBruisesx, if you like their acoustic stuff...check out New American Classic off of Where You Want To Be and Your Own Disaster off their 5-song self-titled demo (along with good demo versions of Great Romances, Bike Scene, Head Club and Blue Channel). And speaking as a guy who listens to this stuff, I know a lot of guys who aren't pussies who love this stuff, so yeah...at least civil if you're going to bash it.

Taking Back Sunday – Great Romances of the 20th Century Lyrics 19 years ago
This is actually the demo version (or at very least, the non-album version). But this song has really grown on me and now it's probably my favorite from the album, probably cause it hits so close to home. There are a lot of guys who are total jerks to girls and for that I don't blame girls for their distrust of us guys. However there are a lot of totally genuine guys out there too, just like the guy in the song. The girl he's with doesn't trust him (this won't mean a thing come tomorrow); she's attached to him so she's willing to get physical but she does so out half-heartedly (let's just get this over with). The guy is stunned at her coldness and distance from him and perhaps just a bit angry (I never said I'd take this lying down). He doesn't want to complain and would be happy just doing what she's comfortable with (but I love the way you roll excuses off the tip of your tongue). He wants to get physical with her but it holds a very special meaning for him even if he doesn't show it. So if it doesn't keep her up nights, then what was the point of being so intimate if he wouldn't always be on her mind. He's breaking down emotionally (then what's the point???). Towards the end, the guy realizes the girl is spereating herself from her and desperately wants to cling to whatever they have. He's emotionally breaking down in her bedroom and you can tell by the slight pitch shift when he says "I'm in your room" on the album version. He's hoping (perhaps in vain) that he can at least be close to her through the physicality they used to have ("Am I turning you on?" said with Adam's desperation) but there's nothing he can do to show her that his feelings for her are genuine and truly love. For SOME guys sex is a manifestation of the intense love a guy feels for a girl, so ladies, please keep that in mind. Lazzara captured it perfectly.

Radiohead – Fitter Happier Lyrics 19 years ago
I definitely agree with all the dehumanization talk for this song's theme. I also can see where it's saying that technology can't fix everything. It's almost like a computer monitor in a hospital or laboratory monitoring a patient. The patient has a mental disorder which and scientists/doctors are testing a new treatment to fix the patient and monitoring the patient's progress as he strives to reenter society's cookie cutter standards for behavior. But subtly below the surface the patient's disorder is merely hidden, not cured and is revealed through the monitor's reports "Never washing spiders down the plughole" "No killing moths or putting boiling water on ants" shows how the patient still has the thought in his mind but his actions are restrained by the treatment. The person seems perfected thanks to technology but there are still cracks beneath the surface...Just a possibility.
