Melvins – Hooch Lyrics 13 years ago
If you know how to decode it, you're reading way too far into it. There may be some Melvins songs with actual meaning, but this definitely isn't one of them. But hey, you don't listen to the Melvins for some kind of message or philosophical enrichment, you listen to the Melvins to sludge the f.ck out!

Propagandhi – Ordinary People Do Fucked-Up Things When Fucked-Up Things Become Ordinary Lyrics 18 years ago
too many people say they care just because its popular. too many people would lead a revolution just for the attention. this is kind of a similar message to the scene in orwell's 1984 where the main character and his girlfriend (dont remember the names) are being told about the network and how they will never reap the benefits of their actions and they must do it knowing that it is for the good of humanity not for themselves. it is saying that fighting the system shouldnt be for glamour or popularity, it should be for real change. a true revolutionary is selfless.

Propagandhi – Ladies' Nite in Loserville Lyrics 18 years ago
thefooligan5, thank you! wow. my thoughts exactly. the term sexism has been skewed as only referring to men against women, when really, it goes for either against either. i, myself am for equality for all, not this modern idea of raising the suppressed above the suppressor, as thats not equality at all. i think thats what hes saying with "no needle dick can silence me" in that so many men call themselves feminists just to impress women and end up becoming sexist against themselves. so, "no needle dick can silence me" is saying that he wont go with the fad and be sexist against himself because he is about true equality, meaning equal rights and respect for men and women. although, thats just my opinion, not sure if its chris hannah's.

Propagandhi – March Of The Crabs Lyrics 18 years ago
i actually had a bit of a different idea of this song. a bit less political. possibly its about how - kind of a more general version of what wanglo said - how young kids are so passionate when theyre young. kids are so idealistic, wanting to actually accomplish things and become something or maybe make a difference in the world. maybe this is just my own ranting superimposed on the song, but then through school and all the other bullshit kids are put through, they all realize that all the fights are unwinnable and give up. "the fight never happened. the crowd petered out. we all dribbled home. mission accomplished." the system worked, the masses are silenced. the 12 year old revolutionary is now sitting in a cubicle wearing a suit and tie. well thats my two cents on the matter.

Tool – Die Eier Von Satan Lyrics 18 years ago
ya, it really pisses me off how much people associate the german language with hitler. i mean, come on. that was one asshole who tried to take over the world more than 60 years ago - nothing to do with germany today. tool knows this, and in the pranksterly nature of tool, they decided to fuck with the heads of their fans and make them think a recipe for hash cookies was some kind of nazi/satanic message. seriously, people. also, one of the reasons i love tool is that they can be sarcastic and humorous in a really serious voice and everyone will think theyre serious. look at their band name for example - tool. come on, doesnt it seem kinda funny that they have gotten thousands of people to go around wearing shirts that say tool in huge letters across the front? ya, tool is so much cooler if you dont take them so seriously.

Tool – Part of Me Lyrics 18 years ago
if theres one thing that tool knows how to do best its screwing with their fans. for example, i read a story about how at one of their shows, they were performing third eye, and maynard actually got the entire crowd chanting "think for yourself, question authority". they do this all the time. its not because theyre assholes or anything, they just have a better sense of humor than most people these days, and they know it. every year on april fools day or sometimes a few days before or after, they pull some giant joke on their fans and freak everyone out. every year. without fail. and every year, people believe them. without fail. like, did you really believe that maynard found jesus last year?! and i personally believe that the new album will not be called "10000 days". firstly, before lateralus, they put out a fake album name, a bunch of fake song titles, even a few fake mp3s. and also, if you look at their new logo, you dont have to be a genius to realize that it actually says FOOL. look on their website if you dont believe me. their just fucking with us.

now, onto the song. as you may have gathered from my previous ranting, this song is most likely not about maynard's dick. i think to understand this song, we have to look at the band's name itself - tool. seeing a pattern yet? i think this song could be about a few things.

i dont claim to know which one maynard actually meant, but firstly, it could be about some spineless toady who will cling on to you no matter what, an attention whore, a TOOL, someone who will do anything to be cool or popular or secure. by that interpretation, maynard knows that he has complete power over this person. listen to the song "liar" by henry rollins band.

second, it could be about a mask, not a literal mask, but a facade, the face you show to the world to disguise your true self. that interpretation presents screwy problems with perspective though.

fuck, i dont know what this songs about. its probably about one of those. or who knows, maynard could be double bluffing and its really about his dick. or maybe hes just trying to make us all get all paranoid about it and freak out. or maybe he specifically wrote it about you. not people like you, not metaphorically, but you specifically...... puppet......

im actually really surprised that this song is on here. this is one of the most dark and haunting songs ive ever heard. it has an incredibly apocalyptic feel to it and the lyrics go perfectly with the music. just listening to it makes me want to tear the system down and become a nomad.... i just wish i listened to them back when they were still doing shows. ive heard stories about their shows and they sound amazing.

Tool – No Quarter (Led Zeppelin cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
i personally think this is better than the original just by my standards. the original definitely has a different feel, i agree with what someone else said, the zeppelin version is kind of spooky sounding and the tool version is more apocalyptic. i must admit i do have a huge bias toward tool, just because they are my favorite band and i love their sound, but i am aware that zeppelin inspired a lot of bands like tool and i really admire them for that.

as far as the greatest guitarist list thing goes, id just like to throw my opinion out there - i think that even though some guitarists on the list are extremely talented musically, i would put adam jones a bit higher just because though he may not be as musically talented as hendrix or steve vai, he is incredibly original, and has more creativity than some of the others. thats the problem with some guitarists like malmsteen, he just plays extremely fast metal, but it doesnt sound a whole lot different from all the other metal. jones has a sound unlike any guitarists before him, like the way he combines pinch harmonics, feedback, flange, and delay to get that crazy fluttery whistling sound is something ive never heard in any other band.

one somewhat obscure guitarist i might add to the list is the guitarist for the progressive thrash band propagandhi (i dont remeber his name), but you should check them out. if you want to get a sense of just how incredible the guitarist is (and the rest of the band too, for that matter), check out their cd "today's empires, tomorrow's ashes"

The Offspring – Tehran Lyrics 19 years ago
all i know is that along with the political messages in this song, this song is a true display of what Ron Welty is capable of. i mean, he plays some pretty wicked drum lines on a lot of offspring songs, but this song is just jaw dropping. as far as the rest of the song goes, i especially like the part
"Will you ever wonder
If the man that's in your sights
Ever kissed his girl goodbye"
that little segment really shows how war isnt like a video game -- all the people that die in have friends and families. theyre not just "bad guys" that you have to kill to get points, or medals in the case of real war, theyre living, breathing human beings.

The Offspring – Not The One Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this is a simply amazing song. goes along perfectly with all of the offspring's other material the amazing, and yet simple bass line, and the common theme of how our elders dont deserve nearly all the respect they demand. this song is all about how the past generations have caused so many problems and have pretty much destroyed the world and now us kids have to deal with it. i know its pretty obvious but the point of this site is to say what we think songs mean, not to just say that they have a meaning.

Bob Dylan – Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics 19 years ago
my personal perspective of this song is just from the music itself, i havent even read the lyrics in depth, but i think it may be like some of beck's songs, and the lyrics are just crazy awesome ramblings that mean nothing but sound good with the music. you dont need drugs to have crazy awesome ramblings. if you think you cant have a crazy awesome ramblings without drugs, youre not very creative, or youre just not trying hard enough. anyhoo, i think this song is just a cool fun easy going song that feels good to the ears. or maybe some of you are right, and its just a story about something in dylan's life, and hes not trying to make any message or be controversial or anything, but just trying to make something cool that people can tap their feet to.

also, just to throw this out there, look in every song in the entire songmeanings.net database and youll see someone has said that its about drugs. im dead serious. its kind of sad how obsessed people are with drugs on this site. and just to let you know, im not saying drugs are bad by any means, i mean i am an occasional recreational drug user myself, im just annoyed at all of these probably 12 year old kids who are so desparate for attention or some kind of instant gratification that they just go around talking about drugs constantly, and ruin them for the rest of us.

sorry if i sound whiny, but that just really bothers me. ...man, i need to go listen to tambourine man now.

Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place Lyrics 19 years ago
i thought of another way to look at this song. this may not be what thom intended for this song to mean, but it an interesting way to look at it.

suicide........
it starts off, calm and peaceful, saying everything in its right place, possibly like the person committing suicide has everything in place -- theyve written out the note, they have the knife, theyre ready, and its just kind of a weird peaceful feeling of "this is it, itll all be over soon." then later into the song, the person is thinking about their life, thinking about random little things they hate in life -- "yesterday i woke up sucking a lemon." and thinking about other people and things they have said. then the song intensifies, getting chaotic and angry -- at this point the person slitting their wrist, pulling the trigger, whatever, then the song mellows out, the person is lying on the floor, its all over, and the last few moments of the song are calm and peaceful.

something about the mood of the song almost sounds like the end, or suicide: the steady drumbeat like a heartbeat, and the beginninig of the song is peaceful in an amost eerie way.

i know its a little bleak, but just think about it next time you listen to the song.

Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place Lyrics 19 years ago
when i first heard this song, one word came to mind - equilibrium. that was just going by the sound, not even paying attention to what thom was saying. now seeing the other interpretations, i can see the different points of view.

i kind of agree with the manic depressive idea. the whole structure of the song is kind of manic depressive in a way, it starts off almost euphoric, very peaceful - everything in its right place, but then the mood changes into "yesterday i woke up sucking a lemon" and thom's tone of voice gets more chaotic and emotional along with the music. by the end of the song, it goes back to the euphoric feel.

i can also see the OCD idea. it starts off as the obsessive compulsive person has everything perfectly organized and life is good, everything is in its right place. then something goes wrong, and the world is crashing down and they must fix it. they fix it and at the end of the song, all is well. im not sure how the lyrics fit into this interpretation though.

i'd like to see how a non-english speaking person would see this song. well, i have to go, so thats all for my interpretation for now.

AFI – Bleed Black Lyrics 19 years ago
i dont mean to sound cliche or emo, but this whole song seems to be about depression and dying inside. i dont happen to know much of anything about davey to make assumptions on whether this is accurate to his personality or something, so this is all completely objective.

it starts with " I am exploring the inside, I find it desolate"
hes becoming introverted, looking within himself, analyzing his life and his soul, and seeing that his fire inside has been put out, so to speak -- his soul has died.

"I do implore these confines, now, as they penetrate, recreate me"
he cant avoid looking within himself, and doing so has made him a competely different person.

"I'm hovering throughout time, I crumble in these days
I crumble, I cannot, I cannot find reflection in these days"
hes living almost outside of time, almost like an observer, like hes just kind of hovering, and not really living in real life, if that makes any sense. hes just falling apart inside, becoming more and more detatched from life. he cant hold the burden, he cant handle his life -- he "cannot find reflection in these days"

"(If you listen) Listen, listen
(Listen close) Beat by beat"
here, hes really looking inside himself, making the analogy of listening to his own heartbeat.

"(You can hear when the heart stops) I saved the pieces
(When it broke) And ground them all to dust"
in looking inside himself he could almost see himself die, and watched it all happen. he says he saved the pieces, hes remembering what he used to be like, remembering when he was alive and happy, and he cant handle thinking about how great it was and so he smashes the pieces, tries to deny and avoid his memories, because they just make him feel worse.

"I am destroyed by the inside, I disassociate
I hope to destroy the outside, it will alleviate and elevate me"
he has become so devastated by depression inside himself that he has began to cut himself off from the world. he sees that he can no longer relate to the outside world, and theres a kind of hostile jealousy of the happy lively people around him, and he thinks that he would be happy and peaceful if all the happy people were gone so he wouldnt have to look at them and live with them.

"Like water flowing into lungs, I'm flowing through these days
As morphine tears through deadened veins, I'm numbing in these days"
water flowing into lungs is just a poetic emphasis and segue into the next line, it just kind of adds more analogy of death into the next few lines. he says hes flowing through these days -- hes almost on autopilot, just kind of flowing through his life, apathetic of whats happening around him. he then talks about becoming emotionally numb, feeling pain so much that hes just stopped feeling altogether.

"I know what died that night, it can never be brought back to life
Once again, I know
I know I died that night and I'll never be brought back to life
Once again, I know"
first hes just talking about death almost as if it were someone else that died, in a way almost denying that it was him. then he kind of comes to grips with reality and admits that it was him that died, and becoming hopeless, thinking that he can never come back to life, and saying "i know" like kind of "dont try to comfort me, i know, its over for me."

well, thats my idea of what the songs about. not saying its definitely what he meant by it, but its just my interpretation of it.

Tool – Stinkfist Lyrics 19 years ago
i can definitely see how it could be about drug addiction, if it was written by another band, but tool isnt anti drugs! they just arent. i totally agree with the desensitization and the media idea though.

"what became of subtlety"
people are no longer entertained by simple things, we need giant extravagant things just to keep us entertained. i also agree with the multiple point of view idea.

"boredoms not a burden anyone should bear"
that is from the point of view of the desensitizer, telling us its not enough.

the only problem is that this topic itself doesnt seem like something tool would cover, just because tool doesnt seem to do anything remotely political, its just not their style. singing about the media would be somewhat political. in fact ive even read in interviews that their lyrics are more atmospheric than meaningful, and maynard comes up with lyrics to go along with the music. i guess we'll just have to ask maynard himself on this one.

Soundgarden – Hands All Over Lyrics 19 years ago
i agree with thunderbolt on this one. it is totally an environmental message.

it says "turning eagles into vultures" that could be about how america (eagle) the wonderful beautiful nation has become a vulture and is just picking at the scraps of our dying planet.

that then ties into "gonna kill your mother" which probably refers to earth (mother), and how were killing it. and of course when he says "and i love her" hes not being creepy and saying he loves your mom, hes saying he loves the earth and doesnt want it to die.

then when it gets to "crewmen thank her then lay down their oily blanket" hes probably talking about crewmen on freighters being glad that theres water to sail on or something, then polluting it with oil from the ship.

the part of "In a striking motion trees fall down Like dying soldiers" hes talking about the people clearcutting forests, and falling down like dying soldiers is like an analogy of a war between man and nature and how nature is being destroyed.

then he gets to "Hands all over the words I utter Change them into what you want to Like balls of clay Put your hands away" hes actually telling us not to overanalyze his lyrics, which in a way makes asses out of all of us! on that note, im gonna stop overanalyzing his lyrics.

A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this song achieves an incredible thought provoking message without being too deep or metaphorical, sort of a simplified version of Eulogy. i believe that the people talking about the story of the general talking to judith were half right (i havent actually read the story but it sounds like it fits the song fairly well) i think that he may be using the story to get his message across, the message which i do think is against the christian religion, but also mainly against blind followers of the christian religion.

still you pray never stray never taste the fruit never thought to question why - in other words, you give so much to the religion, devote so much time to trying to please this invisible, intangible superhuman entity in the sky, getting nothing in return, not even proof of iits existence, and yet you never stop to think about whether the story youve been told all you life is more than just a fairytale, whether god actually exists and is more than just the main character's father in the fairytale.

It's not like you killed someone It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed - in other words, youve suffered so much following your faith, taken the guilt trip for so long, treated as if you personally killed jesus, and yet you continue to follow with all your heart and soul.

a message to all the christians who refuse to believe that this song is anti christian - maynard is anti christian. just because you love god and love christianity doesnt mean that everyone and everything you love also shares that belief. no matter how much you want this song to not be anti christian, it will still be anti christian. and so will the band that wrote it.

heres what i think about this song. i think it was a total just for the hell of it song. when he says im getting bored at the end, i think hes just kind of being weird and rambling. i totally agree with giveadont on the thing that just because its weird doesnt mean theyre on drugs. just remember, if you are ever falling through an endless void in the limbo state of tuesday, make sure to mention the ultimate spiralform being and youll get a free pizza! i just made that up and im totally sober right now, proof that you can be incredibly weird and not high. on the topic of whether they are pro or anti drugs, i think the song die eir von satan pretty much sums it up. why would an anti drug band give its listeners a recipe for hash cookies?! seriously, people, just because you hate drugs for whatever lame reason you have, that doesnt mean your favorite band is also straight edge. wow, im totally rambling.
