Ingrid Michaelson – The Way I Am Lyrics

I think there's some irony that she loves him because he takes her as she is, yet she's going to buy him Rogaine when he loses his hair, which suggests that she wouldn't be taking him for what he is. |

Indigo Girls – Closer to Fine Lyrics

I agree w/ the rest of you, it's a great song, but I don't think it's about being gay specifically. Instead I think it's about life in a more general sense: what not to waste time on, what makes true happiness, and making the most out of life. |

Billy Joel – She's Always A Woman Lyrics

I've always wondered what the following lyrics meant:
"But she can't be convicted
She's earned her degree"
I've always taken the lyrics literally, and as a kid I wondered what kind of degree you could earn that made you immune to arrest/conviction. After thinking about it further, I suppose that it suggests that she is elusive. Such as in an argument, it’s impossible to prove her wrong (convicted) because she is so capable of defending her self (her degree). |

Quonset, that's actually probably true, but I'd cringe every time I heard the country version of it--especially since I live in Nashville. |

Chris Cornell – Seasons Lyrics

I think this song is about the drive to do what you want to do in life, and the frustration that sometimes exists when you fall short of having the path or the motivation to doing that. The lines, “Dreams have never been the answer, And dreams have never made my bed.” Indicate to me that doing, not dreaming, is what gets results. By not taking the charge of your life, you will be left behind as seasons roll on by. |

The Alan Parsons Project – Eye In The Sky Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
As a well repected musician, you expect the lyrics could be inspired by one thing (a literal or figure eye in the sky such as either those in casions or those written by Orwell) and about another thing (relationships). I've heard that Parsons indicated on an XM Radio show (Artist Confidential) that these lyrics were indeed inspired after a visit to a casino in Vegas. The back album cover art apparently contains pictures of these security cameras. |

R.E.M. – Radio Free Europe Lyrics

HERE'S A BIT MORE HISTORY OF RFE:
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is a radio and communications organization which is funded by the United States Congress. The organization exists in Europe and the Middle East. It broadcasts more than 1,000 hours per week, in 28 languages, via shortwave, AM, FM and the Internet. RFE/RL's official mission statement is: "To promote democratic values and institutions by disseminating factual information and ideas."
The National Committee for a Free Europe was founded in June 1949 in New York. RFE was the broadcasting arm of this organization. The headquarters was established in Munich and it transmitted its first short-wave program on July 4, 1950, to Czechoslovakia.
The organization received its funds from the Congress of the United States and until 1971 they were passed to RFE through the CIA. The broadcasts were part of a general CIA psychological warfare campaign directed behind the Iron Curtain. The CIA created general guidelines and had daily input into the handling of news items. The CIA funding of RFE was not publicly acknowledged until 1971 at which point the organization was rechartered in Delaware as a non-profit-making corporation, oversight was moved to the International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB), and the budget was moved to open appropriations.
In 1975, RFE was merged with a very similar Congress funded anti-communist organization called Radio Liberty (RL, founded in 1951 by the American Committee for the Liberation of the Peoples of Russia) and the group name was officially changed to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).
Soviet authorities regularly attempted to jam RFE/RL broadcasts and these efforts did not end until 1988. From 1985 until 1993 the organization also ran Radio Free Afghanistan.
The collapse of the Soviet Union reduced the budget for RFE/RL: its headquarters were moved to Prague in 1995 and European operations were curtailed (save those of the South Slavic Department). However operations were expanded elsewhere: in 1998 Radio Free Iraq and a Persian service, were started; in 1999 a service was started in Kosovo; and in 2002 Radio Free Afghanistan was restarted and the Persian Service was incorporated into Radio Farda. In addition, in 1994 the mission of the International Broadcasting Bureau was transferred to the Broadcasting Board of Governors.

The Doors – Back Door Man Lyrics

Since it is a cover song, it does differ a bit from the original Willie Dixon lyrics, and you really need to look at the original to get the intended meaning of the song.
I believe the line, "You men eat your dinner, Eat your pork and beans. I eat more chicken than any man ever seen" refers to the men who come home and have dinner from their wives (pork & beans) and are oblivious to the 'chicken' that their wives previously served to the Back Door Man. |

Madonna – Live To Tell Lyrics
|
As Necronic states, this song was in the movie At Close Range, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was written with the same meaning as the movie's meaning (but it could & there are a lot of similarities). In the end of the movie, Sean Penn's character does have the chace to tell the secret to the court that is hearing the trial against his father. And he does tell.
I also think abuse fits in well w/ this song. As far as the "beauty lives" verse, that could be interpretted as the victim's view that although there is abuse going on, and the abuser is taking a lot away, there are some things that cannot be taken away. The beauty is what the victim focuses on at times in order to not be overwhelmed by the abuse.
In a way, both interpretations are correct because in the movie the father is essentially abusing the kids by bringing them into a world of crime & even worse shooting his son. |

Led Zeppelin – Darlene Lyrics

Zeppelin is a great band, but this has got to be one of their worst songs. It doesn't have nearly the feeling as most of their songs do, and the lyrics are pretty weak as well. I wonder how long it took to write this song. |

The Replacements – Answering Machine Lyrics

This is a simple concept about not accepting the lack of personal intimacy. I love all the comparisons to things that are as equally as futile as expressing emotion through a machine: "Try to breathe some life into a letter", "Try to free a slave of ignorance", "Try and teach a whore about romance".
I heard this song a thousand times but never picked up on the 212, 313 lyrics at the end (PS, 313 is Michigan). |

Ramones – I Wanna Be Sedated Lyrics

Straight from the mouth of Joey Ramone:
There's an album called, "In Their Own Words, Vol. 1" which is a compilation of various artist’s performances at The Bottom Line. On this album, Joey Ramone talks about what prompted this song. In summary, he wrote the song when he was touring in England at Christmas time when everything was shut down, and he and a band mate were in their hotel watching The Guns of Navarone on the television. They found it ironic that they were rock stars in England with absolutely nothing to do but watch an American movie. Hence the lyrics, “Nothing to do. Nowhere to go. I wanna be sedated”. |

Beth Orton – Stolen Car Lyrics

Great song, saw her perform it at Bonnaroo 2004.
Song meaning is tough to identify. Seems a little ambiguous, but essentially about confusion, misunderstanding, and maybe deception in a relationship. |

Sleater-Kinney – Get Up Lyrics

To me this song is about emracing life as well as death (let it all go at once) and not dreading the latter (her soul is singing from every branch). "Like beggars, like Stars, like whores, us all" --> we're all going to die no matter who you were.
Could "Get Up" mean get up to heaven?
Anyway, great song, great band. |

The Psychedelic Furs – Pretty in Pink Lyrics

Yeah, don't know the meaning, but all the posts seem plausible. Definitely involving a promiscuous woman. Or is it a transvestite? “He's walking around In this dress That she wore She is gone But the joke's the same” Could be Caroline the man reflecting after Caroline the woman did her thing w/ the last dude (perhaps it’s only during sex that he truly feels like a woman).
BTW, Social Distortion does an outstanding cover of this song. |

World Party – Ship Of Fools Lyrics
|
Essentially he is not wanting to get caught in the rat race with all of the other fools and lose sight of what is really important. And for those who don't get out of it are in the ship thinking that they are on the correct path ("torn by the promise of women/lace/gold/cotton/pearls"), but will pay for it a later time, perhaps post mortem. In addition, the ship isn't even going to the right destination ("You sail AWAY from the light of the world...") |

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Machine Gun Lyrics

On the Band of Gypsys album, the following lyrics preceed the song:
"I'd like to dedicate this song to all the soldiers fighting in Chicago, and Miwaukee, and New York. Oh yes, and all the soldiers fighting in Vietnam."
He mentions Vietnam almost as an afterthought, which I believe is intentional because of his views on the US fighting in that war. It's a humorous statement because one would expect that Jimi would mention Vietnam immediately rather than an afterthought. |

This is one of this great songwriter's best songs. While listening, you can feel the song as much as you can hear it. Patty is an artist that seemingly doesn't have to search for something to write about, rather the songs are pouring out of her thoughts and experiences. If you've never heard this song (and the album Living With Ghosts), I can't recommend it enough. Drop what you are doing and go buy it. |
