Billy Joel – Goodnight Saigon Lyrics 19 years ago
Billy Joels Greatest hits 1&2 is a tape that's been around my entire life... one of my earliest memories... I never really got into this song till I was about 11 or 12, and I really don't know why I did... I always new about 'Nam, but for some reason I heard this song one time and felt so hurt... like I had gone over there, and come back myself, leaving so many friends behind...

The way the vets were treated upon their return was indeed horrible, but I don't see any of that in this song... The song is simply about the horror of the war itself...

But this song does have a deeper meaning to me now... I can't listen to it right now... Just reading it brings tears to my eyes... I'm worried about my friends over in Iraq... Here's hoping that they'll all come home together..

Usually I don't get involved in arguments on these posts since they're supposed to be about the songs meaning. But the meaning of this song to me is that you have to get involved in the world and try to fight the moral decay.

So many points to argue against in this conservative rant... First off, You don't like the way the conservatives are turned into a scape goat? Do unto others. I don't like the way you're scapegoating us liberals.

As for the girl who threw the baby out the window? Well let's think here for a second. A 13 year old girl gets pregnant. Her mother was probably afraid of taking her to an abortion clinic because of people like you standing around outside ready to hurl insults, lies, and anything close at hand at the murdering little whore. So instead, the child carries a child to term, and being mentally, emotionally, and psychologically unprepared for motherhood, throws the child out the window. And it's all the fault of the liberals. I'm not saying that it's right for a 13 year old to have sex, but it should be ok for her to NOT have to carry a child. The emotional and psychological scars of having an abortion would be enough punishment.

As for your examples of leftists...
There's one very important figure you left out if we go by your definitions.

George W. Bush - He kills those who dare use religion to show how evil he is, not to mention how he uses Democracy as a means to control the Populace.

Kim Jong Il's nuclear threat? Gee, Didn't our country use that threat in a decades long cold war?

"Zarqawi isn't conservative. Uses violence to show distaste for ideologies other than his own. Also threatens to "bring down democracy."

George W. Bush - Uses violence to show distaste for ideologies other than his own. Also threatens to bring Democracy to the world.

Christian organizations don't open soup kitchens out of any desire to help people on the streets. If that was the case, then the homeless wouldn't be force fed Religion alongside their soup and bread.

I've worked with several organizations over the years that helped the homeless, and while they weren't religious organizations, They were far from atheist. You need to broaden your scope and stop taking such a narrow world view.

I won't deny that us liberals deserve some of the blame for the problems in this country, but the conservatives shoulder some of the responsibility as well. If the left and right up on capital hill could stop fighting for dominance and simply work for what's best for the country,..

As far as Britney, Christina and their Ilk go, they are pathetic and non political. If you want to attack prominent left wing musicians, Try P. Diddy. I'm sure that you believe his attempt to get the youth of the nation out to vote on election day was some leftist plot, while I believe that the apparent lack of youth turnout at the elections was a well devised conservative plot.

I leave you with this thought... "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds." - Bob Marley

To the people that say this song is a drug reference, I disagree. There are references to drugs (supplies), but that's not even a central theme. This song is simply a beautiful song about what I consider the most beautiful thing in the world... Being on the road. Any time I take a road trip anywhere, I start off listening to this song...

The first time I heard this song was playing the game SSX3... I pretty much made a playlist with just this song and one or two others on it... To me this song is about freedom. Plain and simple.

Butthole Surfers – Pepper Lyrics 19 years ago
Ok... Well, First off, I always that the line was "They were all in love with Di, and they were drinking from a fountain..." I'm listening to it right now... that one line over and over and I can't tell... It could be either one... let's gowith the dying theory...

I hate that almost any song out there people turn into a drug reference, but I can definitely see that in this one... I've never done heroin, but from what I've heard about it, it could be described as drinking from a fountain (shooting up) that was pouring like an avalanche, coming down a mountain (The rush of heroin into your system puts you into a stupor, and each time you do it, there's the possibility of being buried under that rush and not coming out... much like an avalanche)

But moving away from the drug reference, This song is simply about being stupid... and the chorus is about coming out of that wild streak for a moment... Waking up during the day sometimes, and seeing that the world is a pretty ok place in the sunshine...

I think the taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes line is about... Ok, Screw it... The more I think about it, the more clearly this becomes an ode to heroin...

P.O.D. – Youth Of The Nation Lyrics 19 years ago
Viro, Please try to remove your head from your ass. Thank you.

Gat is a street term for Gun. It's been used in dozens of other songs over the years, first one coming to mind would be Regulators by Warren G featuring Nate Dogg... I doubt a couple of Gangstas from Long beach could get their hands on a gatling gun either.

That being said, I like this song. The message is pretty obvious: The children are the future, and what a fucked up future it's turning out to be...

Speaking as someone who's barely out of childhood, being 23, I've gotta say that this is an awesome wake up call song, and it's a shame that no one cares.

Audioslave – Like a Stone Lyrics 19 years ago
When you combine the lyrics with the music, and the tone of the Vocals, this song is ultimately about that desperate moment when you realize that you are mortal, and that this might be all there is... This song is about questioning whether or not there is an afterlife, and worrying that the answer is no...

And to me, "you" is death, and "Your house" is life...

Meaning that Life is the house of death, which is the one place that death will never be...

ATC – Around The World Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is a cheesy Dance track, plain and simple. Cheezy beats, cheesy lyrics, cheesy vocals.

That being said, this song brings back some crazy drug fogged memories from the early days of this century... lol At least I think these things happened... could just be hallucinations...

Now, as for the songs Meaning...

I think this song is about the whole worldwide EDM culture... The song is written from the perspective of someone who's just spent an entire night in some dark, hot warehouse with several hundred close friends listening to DJs and dancing like a nut... (The kisses of the sun - Were sweet I didn’t blink
I let it in my eyes - Like an exotic dream)

Then they retrn home, and sitting in thir house, alone, they decide to try to communicate what it feels like to be a raver/clubber/dancer, by writing a song (Inside an empty room - My inspiration flows
Now wait to hear the tune - Around my head it goes
The magic melody - You want to sing with me
Just la la la la la – the music is the key)

Even though the party is in the past, it'll be a part of the singer forever (And now the night is gone - Still it goes on and on
So deep inside of me - I long to set it free
I don’t know what to do - Just can’t explain to you
I don’t know what to say – Oh not another word)

America – A Horse With No Name Lyrics 19 years ago
The song is NOT about Heroin!! I mean, seriously!! Does the band Godsmack's name refer to a deity on heroin?!?!?!

The America album was released in Britain to moderate response. Though "I Need You" was discussed as an initial single, Warner Bros. asked the band to come up with another song that would break them on the radio. So, five months after the album came out, they went into a small London studio and demoed four new tunes. Among them was an enigmatic Bunnell number with a catchy rhythm that was initially called "Desert Song." Much to the band's surprise, that was the song that Warners chose to release.

The band went into Morgan Sound Studios (where Beckley had played bass on demo sessions a few years before) to record the song, with Samwell producing and Kim Haworth brought in on drums. At Samwell's suggestion, "Desert Song" was retitled "A Horse With No Name."

A tune as famous as this one deserves a detailed explanation, though Bunnell suggests that its meaning has evolved over time: "I was messing around with some open tunings--I tuned the A string way down to an E, and I found this little chord, and I just moved my two fingers back and forth, and the entire song came from basically three chords. I wanted to capture the imagery of the desert, because I was sitting in this room in England, and it was rainy. The rain was starting to get to us, and I wanted to capture the desert and the heat and the dryness."

The imagery came from Dewey's childhood: "I had spent a good deal of time poking around in the high desert with my brother when we lived at Vandenberg Air Force Base [in California]. And we'd drive through Arizona and New Mexico. I loved the cactus and the heat. I was trying to capture the sights and sounds of the desert, and there was an environmental message at the end. But it's grown to mean more for me. I see now that this anonymous horse was a vehicle to get me away from all the confusion and chaos of life to a peaceful, quiet place."

Bunnell adds an aside about his choice of language in the song: "I have taken a lot of poetic license in my use of grammar, and I always cringe a little bit at my use of 'aint's,' like 'ain't no one for to give you no pain' in "Horse." I've never actually spoken that way, but I think it conveys a certain honesty when you're not picking and choosing your words, and you use that kind of colloquialism."

Alanis Morissette – Your House Lyrics 19 years ago
I like what no expression says about the gutted feeling... This song is done totally a capella with a bit of reverb FX thrown in.... Now that you mention it it does have an empty hollow feel to it... This song is so simple yet so profound...

I always thought of it as a current boyfriend's house, but now that I read other peoples interpretation, I believe that it is an ex... I think that she's stuck on him, and the anguish at the end of the song when she realizes he's moved on already...

The first time I heard this song I was lying in my room as a teen, listening to this Angry CD, and fuming over all the injustice of my life... I always knew that there was that extra You oughtta know on there, but I usually turned off the CD right after it was done... This time, as I said, I was fuming about life sucking, and all of a sudden, a few mminutes after the CD ended, I heard this haunting voice... I wasn't sure at first what it was, then I realized the CD was still going... I felt like her voice reached out and caressed my heart, soothing that anger and resentment inside me... And then she finds the letter, and the anguish in her voice when she says "It wasn't my writing" crushed my heart into pulp... I cried so hard... The CD ended... I turned it back on, skipped to track 13, and listened to it again... and again...

This song has been my favorite Alanis song ever since...

Alanis Morissette – Hand In My Pocket Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm amazed more people haven't commented on this song!!!

This was on Jagged Little Pill, which is a very angry, bitter, resentful album... To me this song is kind of the eye of the storm, ya know? It's all about contradictions... And it's so calm compared to the tumult of the rest of the album...

This song has a very soothing effect on me when I'm feeling boxed in... I think loser fish is right about it being about nonconformity... It's about taking all the crap that society tries to force feed you and shoving it back in their face (which is such a contradiction to the mood and feel of the music itself)!!

Afroman – Because I Got High Lyrics 19 years ago
I think afroman needs to be given credit for giving us a catchy warning... I mean, think about it... This song gets stuck in your head... It's just got a good hook, and the first time you hear it, it's funny as fuck!! But then, the more you listen, the more you hear the words, the more you realize how bad it can be...

On another note, there's a huge difference between Cannabis Sativa (Which variety of weed the song is most likely referring to), and Cannabis Indica. A good Indica gives me a relaxed mind, and an energized body, and things are much easier to get done... Whereas Sativa makes me lazy, stupid, and hungry.

Props to Afroman for this wonderful little warning

The old guy in Chrono trigger was Belthazar...

And as for your interpretation belteshazzar, I'm happy for you that you found that meaning in it, But I'm sick and tired of Jesus freaks applying Christian Dogma to everything!!!

Actually, I almost agree with you... Except for the fact that I don't believe that Jesus was the messiah. I beleive he was a powerful man, and that he performed miraculous deeds...

In my opinion, this song is simply about finding your way back to the top when you've hit rock bottom. The light at the end of the tunnel is you.

Aaron Lewis – Outside Lyrics 19 years ago
Fred dursts random outburst in the middle of it is kind of a discordant note, but I like this live version much better than the album version.

I'm not going to bother going to check my facts right now, but as I recall the story, aaron Lewis was ready to go on at Ozzfest, but the rest of the band wasn't. So he went on the stage with Fred and they sang the song.

I think that the 2 part harmonies make the song much more powerful... Not that it's not an awesome song on the CD, just something about lie performance gives it a bit of a sharper edge...

A Chorus Line – Nothing Lyrics 19 years ago
I relate to this song a whole hell of a lot... I went to a performing arts high school, and I was the class outcast who didn't really get these silly "Theatre games" we had to play during class... The first time I heard this song was onstage at my school, and I didn't really pay attention to it, because I was paying more attention to the overall performance.... But I had the soundtrack record from the original 197* production in new york, and I listened to this song, and at the end when Diana sings

"SIX MONTHS LATER I HEARD THAT KARP HAD DIED.
AND I DUG RIGHT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF MY SOUL....
AND CRIED,
'CAUSE I FELT.... NOTHING. "

I couldn't stop crying for almost a half hour...

So on to what this song means... This song is about being emotionally numb... Being emotionally numb is a lot like when the dentist shoots your jaw full of novocaine, and you can't feel the surface of your skin, but you can feel deep in your tissue, under the surface... Diana hears about her former teachers death, and there's nothing there.... no sadness, no resentment, no anger, no happiness... But the tears came... and with them, a dull ache of emotion, not really felt, but under the surface...

4 Non Blondes – What's Up? Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think it's so much about evil... more on the despair side... just trying to go somewhere in life... (25 years of my life and still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination)

It's about the confusion of coming out of adolescence, and entering the adult world... (What's going on?)

It's about wanting something to change... I mean... the time from 18 to 25 making the transition into "adulthood," and finding out that there's no real end to that despair and anxiety that plagues us all through our teens and early twenties (And I pray, oh my God do I pray
I pray every single day
For a revolution )

This is the song I remember best from the movie...

This movie premiered on MTV back in February of 2000... I was very Anti-MTV at the time, but unfortunately I had been hit by a car on February 8th and was laid up in a rehab hospital with a broken leg. The only thing even close to worth watching on the TV was MTV... so for 2 weeks I watched, and every time I saw the commercial, I hoped that I wouldn't be in the hospital when it aired, because it looked like it was gonna be crap.

I was wrong. The movie turned out to be fairly amusing, and the songs were frickin' hilarious!! Of course, that could've been the pain medication... ::shrug:: Either way, I'm always gonna be amused by this song...

The Floydian one is right. The MEANING of this song isn't in the lyrics. It's in the music, and Kurt's voice... It's the emotion in it.... And its meaning is different to everyone...

To me this song is about reaching out to someone, trying to get them to understand what you're going through... who you are... why you do what you do...

Tom Petty – Mary Jane's Last Dance Lyrics 19 years ago
Every song means something different to every person...

To me, Mary Jane is another way of saying "Anytown, USA", and getting buried under all the pressure... (Tired of screwin' up, tired of goin' down, tired of myself, tired of this town)

The Last Dance is one last wild whirl around town before hitting the road... (Last Dance with Mary Jane)

The pain is the pain of seperating yourself from whatever roots you've set down. (One more time to kill the pain)

On your way out of town, you make the last call to say goodbye, and then you hit the road... (I hit the last number, I walk to the road)

Some songs are seasonal with me... Like this one... I generally listen to this song a LOT during the spring, and especially as summer grows closer. (I feel summer creeping in, and I'm tired of this town again)

Toolup, Good observation on the way the song metaphorically represents the entire process of being a stoner. :-p
