Frank Zappa – Cosmik Debris Lyrics 15 years ago
I gotta say it could be about either. It is all up to interpretation, which is how Frank would want it to be anyway. Think for yourself!

IMO I've always heard it as a anti-drug song. Being against drugs myself its the best, coolest anthem for being sober ever.

Frank Zappa – What's the Ugliest Part of Your Body? Lyrics 16 years ago
While you're right child about the Beatles having a lot of love happy songs, they were also very cynical at times, so I wouldn't count them out to do a song like this. Look up the lyrics to "baby you're a rich man". It's not a happy go lucky hippie tune, or "taxman". They had anger too, just wanted to shed some light on that.

Also Zappa needs more attention, esp these days with so many bands sounding exactly like the next. Long live Zappa.

Bruce Springsteen – Meeting Across the River Lyrics 16 years ago
Love the song and it's obvious relation to the mobsters of NYC, but I've always seen it as one last chance to get signed as an act. I like to listen to this then Rosalita, like ending the story of going back to his girl and saying he just got signed cuz of this songs events. Anybody else ever do this with any other tunes? If you haven't tried it, it can be very entertaining and add many more layers to songs.

Midlake – Van Occupanther Lyrics 16 years ago
If you listen to Midlake's interview at SoundOpinions.net they discuss how the band came up with the name Van Occupanther.

Basically they all created names on the spot to be goofy when leaving a message etc for one another, and one of them was Van Occupanther.

Midlake – Head Home Lyrics 16 years ago
I know this doesn't pertain to the meaning of the song, but I heard this at my grocery store the other day over the intercom. I just wanna lay it out there, I've got the coolest grocery store.

Also this whole album is amazing, I've been listening to it for a solid two weeks now, and I might just go another two.

Modest Mouse – Little Motel Lyrics 16 years ago
Moon why can't they write a general love song? Why does everything need to be grandiose and bombastic? Personally I find this to be a very moving and heartfelt tune just as much as any other MM song.

Also how many songs on this album reference broke down cars? It seems to be right up there with the sea in the world of Mr. Brock.

The Mars Volta – Metatron Lyrics 16 years ago
Goofy I couldn't agree anymore. Although Soothsayer is starting to grow on me a little more.

I'm really disappointed in Conjugal Burns as the ending track. Usually TMV really take it up a notch on the final track (Take the Veil). I like to end the album with Back up Against the Wall. It adds a little short kick and if you listen to the album in a loop it flows very well back into Aberinkula.

I want that old guitar. What stories it has to tell.

Neil Young – Powderfinger Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe it's just an all encompassing anti-war song. The patrol boat of Vietnam (making big waves means it's moving fast), the powder of the American Civil War, the confusion of any war (not knowing what he believes in yet), and the Canadian theory I read earlier fits in there too.

I think it's just basically a "war is f**ked up" song.

Spoon – The Underdog Lyrics 16 years ago
Gotta say this is a big F-U to the record industry.

"Cause you don't talk to the water boy". He'd tell you what he wants. As in, just talk to joe schmo and listen.

Second, "you will never back up an inch", I think is referring to the fact that the record industry still deals in this 1970s frame of mind about albums and contracts. Like if the artist doesn't immediately sell a million copies on their debut album they must suck. And that just sucks for us the fans cause we never get to hear any new bands develop and mature.

But it's ok all, the underdog will prevail. Go independant music go!

One of the most bad ass tunes on the planet. Pretty self explainitory what's gonna on. Basically you better not f**k with Mr. Hooker and esp. not with his wife.

Common – The Food (feat. Kanye West) Lyrics 17 years ago
No comments!! I think this is one of the finest rap tunes ever. Common and Kanye is too good. It's pretty obvious about living in the ghetto and getting scratch however you can to survive.

And the amend the lyric: I can't run away or put my gun away.

Tom Waits – Day After Tomorrow Lyrics 17 years ago
I gotta say I'm from Rockford and Mr. Waits makes it sound way more glamourous than it is.

Such a beautiful sad rainy day song. I wish more music was made this good.

The White Stripes – Effect and Cause Lyrics 17 years ago
Just throwing it out there, but I don't think this song is so straight forward. I think Jack is also referring to the Iraqi war. The rest of the album contains many references and I think this song does as well.

"you built a house of cards
and got shocked when you saw them fall"

is one of the more obvious ones to me. There's also the fact that the Bush administration said "we're going to invade Iraqi for 9/11" (not true) "we're invading Iraq for WMDs: (not true) "For FREEDOM! Cause look how messed up things are over here; hence taking the effect and making it the cause.

Maybe I'm wrong but I that's what I hear. Awesome song.

Wilco – Hate It Here Lyrics 17 years ago
I know it totally sounds as if he's singing about a woman, but the first time I heard this song I thought of kicking drugs. He just came out of re-hab and quit smoking so I thought it was plausible. LIke he's saying I'm trying to keep myself busy by doing all these chores, but you're still on my mind. It's hard to quit. Anybody else get that impression?

Kings of Leon – The Runner Lyrics 17 years ago
I really don't think this is any lullaby. If you read the lyrics he's talking about being away from his woman and not trusting her. Then she cries "it's cold when you're near any bottle" as in, he beats her. She talks to Jesus hoping for salvation from this prick.

submissions
Kings of Leon – Trunk Lyrics 17 years ago
C'mon no posts! The reverb guitar is out of this world. One of favorites on the album definately.

The opening verse sounds like he's a pusher. He gots the drugs (coke and heroin). And there just cruising down the road. Drugs in the trunk. Whoooooo

Simon and Garfunkel – Cecilia Lyrics 17 years ago
FYI sexy80sbabe. Dylan's "Rainy day Women" is not about getting high. Most people think it refers to his trials and tribulations with female relationships, or being judged no matter what you do. As is in ye olde days of Jesus stoned. So the S&G reference to St. Cecilia isn't that outrageous.

Second, I always thought Paul was playing a little coy making it sound as if he's singing about a girl. Cause it could easily be both.

Bob Dylan – Quinn the Eskimo (Mighty Quinn) Lyrics 18 years ago
Dylan was born Jewish, but converted to Christianity in the early to mid 70s. That's why he now has so many christian references.

And I completely agree with Egonium.
"building big ships and boats" refers to Noah
"building monuments" just look around how many there are and
"jotting down notes" would be the apostles

Fugazi – Shut the Door Lyrics 18 years ago
I always thought "I burn a fire to stay cool" meant like he's raging inside, or like when you're a kid and your mom tells you to punch your pillow if your upset, etc. So he does this to "stay cool".

shut the door, so I can leave always sounded like. close the coffin so I can go in peace. I want to see him rest, that kind of thing.

Tom Waits – 9th & Hennepin Lyrics 18 years ago

Tom Waits – Shore Leave Lyrics 18 years ago
Easily my favorite Waits' song. I love the haunting "shore leave" crackled voice at the end. He really sets the tone of how miserable the character feels, and can't wait to get home. Not to mention how fun it would be to shoot billards with a midget. lol

Elvis Costello – Watching the Detectives Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't hear "it only took my little fingers to blow you away" on my version it sounds like "you know they took that little finger stuck to the wheel away" maybe I'm just not hearing it right. Anybody else hearing that or am I crazy? BTW I'm listening to the version on the Best of disc.

Elvis Costello – Radio Radio Lyrics 19 years ago
As for the meaning of the song, that some one asked years ago. This song is about how in WWII the Nazi army made people listen to only one radio station in every town. It was so they could control not only what the people listened to but, send propagada, and maybe even sublinenal (not sure if that's how it's spelled) messages. Elvis is just singing about his rebellion for the entire Gov't regime and like many of his other songs stories of WWII.

And Julie: this music rocks! You're way off base here. At least not every stroke of the guitar is a power chord (cough cough Slipknot).

The Mars Volta – Cassandra Gemini Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow those first 20 mins. rock! Then that lovely 10 mins of music. Again wow! But what is going on here? I hear every character mentioned, the number 25 numerous times. Who are the sons, who is he sworn to kill? And what's with the crackling "Tom Waits" voice at the beginning? I'm still not sure if I really dig that part, but around min 5 or 6 this song is in full force and ready to tear up anything held next to it.

Anyway I got ideas for all of this but there's just too much to discuss. If anybody can find a way to sum it all up it would be greatly appreciated. Hope you enjoy the album like I do and don't forget to buy it on March 1st!!!!!!

The Mars Volta – Ambuletz Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm really with Ninon with this one, definately glad the version I purchased in the US didn't have this as the final track. With the way Take the Veil... ends it sounds so urgent and regretful that you can't help but feel the pain for Cerpain/Julio. But in this song you just kinda feel like hmmm ok what was that. It doesn't flow with the album at all. Again not to say it's a terrible song, just not one that fits the rest of the album, I guess that's why it ended up on the cutting room floor for most of the presses. Well I guess that wasn't real informative, but I just wanted to state that Take the Veil... is a bad ass tune and D.I.T.C. is a bad ass album and Frances the Mute is stellar too. Definately gonna buy that one and you should too (even if you downloaded the leak like me).

Fugazi – Argument Lyrics 19 years ago
agreed with the last two people. popularity means nothing just know that when you like a song admit it whether it's britany spears or fugazi. if you like it, own up to it, and don't give a shit what other people think. that's my philosophy anyway. and as for fugazi being italian for F*ck in italian the basic word is scopare. so yeah it's no where close, wear it in front of grandma, grandpa, the whole word. I think more people should know about Fugazi if not only for the music but for the lyrics and how other people in the world analyze and interprut things. kind of funny that we all have our opinion on this song with a lyric like "some punk will agrue some moral abc's" or maybe that's just me.

Fugazi – Last Chance for a Slow Dance Lyrics 19 years ago
easily, by far, above and beyond any other song fugazi song. That wicked fucking guitar hook just yanks you in and drags you for the ride whether or not. I've played this song for so many people who hated "punk" or "emo" or whatever and about 90% liked this song. So yeah that's gotta mean something.
