i love the smile-kill-love-fear, they all seem like titlecards to feelings that are to be described. probably the only song i have ever heard that has done that so well. plus the fact that the vocals practically massage every word, that helps. |

Two Gallants – Waves of Grain Lyrics

yes, this song makes repeated references to bush (iraq, abortion, god, climate change, etc), but it is less about him, but simply the impending death of the united states. maybe not literally, but at least the admission that the american dream is a fallacy, and that the government does not truly serve the people, but those with money (which includes themselves).
i guess you could look at it as a warning, we can pray for rain, but if the fields are already dead, what use will it be? |

Bright Eyes – Napoleon's Hat Lyrics
|
first of all, the verse about the baron's of industry is about the capitalists who caused WWI (the alliances in the war were based on debts owed between counties), and thus WWII (the huge debts placed on the Weimar Republic allowed for the rise of Hitler), which would fit the flying zeros, even though i think the line is an economic reference.
the mozart verse, i invite anyone else to give it a try, since mine is complete speculation. the verse is about any child who is abused as a source of income and thus loses their childhood innocence. sort of like how michael jackson is so creepy now because he was famous at such a young age.
The Doctor Oppenheimer is indeed Robert Oppenheimer, "the father of the atomic bomb." Most telling is when he visited Japan he was asked whether he felt guilty, he replied, "It's not that I don't feel bad about it. It's just that I don't feel worse today than what I felt yesterday." Like Einstein, he was against the further use of the bomb and the arms race.
The Napoleon verse seems pretty self explanatory, i mean, how else would a diminutive Italian could become the most revered Emperor of France. |

I think this is about the indecision involved in making important life decisions like marriage and a family, and how depression and drugs really make it all the much harder to make a decision. |

The Jealous Sound – Recovery Room Lyrics

this song is totally about an attempted suicide, it follows their themes of depression/drugs and some sort of epiphany. i really actually cant tell if the speaker is talking of the ghost of the person who killer his or her self and living fancifully with it, or whether the attempt failed and now the speaker is being the support that the person who attempted suicide needed. these are so really creepily powerful lines to me taken in context:
"Just forget everything that I said
Washed out the wounds
Walls painted red
Waiting for you in the recovery room" |

The Jealous Sound – Abandon! Abandon! Lyrics

for some reason this song makes me think of the death of a really insufficient step-parent. almost like saying his/her death lifted a cloud from the speaker's life, yet at the same time the speaker has to rationalize his good feelings and support his widow(ed) parent |

i a new thought also just popped into my mind, it is kind of a stretch, but maybe if the entire thing is looked as an OD that one person watches and tries to save the ODer's like with rescue breathing, but at the same time is responsible, and then afterwards the issue becomes unspoken, or almost taboo and this is a way to confront it |

The Jealous Sound – Guard It Closely Lyrics

i would feel comfortable in saying this song is about distancing one's self from family traditions such as Christmas Dinner due to some sort of depression or search for personal identity. its pretty straight forward.
ps bills' quote above is one of my favorite moments on the cd |

The Jealous Sound – The Fold Out Lyrics

i would say it is more about depression and insomnia that goes along with it. the idea of living for the night because that is when you are able to be alone, but still it is always a let down come morning and will only make the next day extremely hard to get through and make you appear strange. But such a situation could easily be caused by drugs or a relationship someone got in too quickly and couldnt handle:
"It's never good unless it's great
You always complicate
All the simple joy, a simple boy
You finally had a taste" |

The Jealous Sound – Hope For Us Lyrics

i got the feeling of a long-term-serious-on-off-relationship, if you can follow that. I didnt think about it that way until a friend (ironicaly one of such a relationship) pointed out the kiss me on the mouth in the sense that a kiss is the place where there is the most honesty, thus truth about one's feelings. |
