Saul Williams – Act III Scene 2 (Shakespeare) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Act III Scene 2 of Julius Caesar is where Marc Antony gives his famous speech (for those not down with Shakespeare, that is where we get "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears..."). He is speaking over Caesar's freshly assassinated body...and in front of Brutus (one of the assassins and Caesar's trusted friend). In the speech, as in this song, the line "But Brutus is an honorable man" is repeated, but it is done so in a way to imply the exact opposite. Marc Antony has to mind his tongue in front of Brutus and the assassins, but he is not about to let his friend (Caesar) be murdered without speaking out. The way in which he does so is through a speech in which he never calls Brutus anything more than "an honorable man" and where he uses what the angry mob already knows to prove to them the truth of the spectacle they had just witnessed. In essence, the crowd and reader MAY believe that Marc Antony is being truthful in calling Brutus an honorable man, but by the end of the speech the crowd and the reader know exactly what to think of Brutus and his treachery. If you care enough to hang out at a place called Song Meanings....and you like Saul Williams enough to check out the lyrics here, you almost owe it to yourself to read that scene from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. It will make this song that much better....and Shakespeare is no slouch himself. But Brutus is an honorable man. |
Bone Thugs-n-Harmony – P.O.D. Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I came here hoping to find out what P.O.D'd means....guess noone know or cares. |
P.O.D. – Chargers Anthem Lyrics | 17 years ago |
P.O.D celebrating the best team in the NFL. Go Bolts! |
Mentors – Golden Showers Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is obviously about young love and a couple's first experience with intimacy. |
Ugly Casanova – Cat Faces Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Interesting info Nauseous.....great food for thought there. |
Two Gallants – Steady Rollin' Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think it is "debt's comin Im still runnin" not "It's comin Im still runnin" I think it is more about the need to keep moving/travelling than about a man on the run from murder. I think the murder was a biproduct of his rambling. It was her or the road and he chose the road! By doing so in the fashion he decided upon, it made his travelling and running even more vital. Great concept for a band that tours as much as they do (and as far as they do already). |
Two Gallants – Crow Jane Lyrics | 17 years ago |
great corrections guys...definitely "dope" and "poplar" also, it goes "I must've lost cause Crow Jane won" in this verse But all I know is that I’ll still run And pledge allegience to the settin’ sun I must’ve lost miss Crow Jane I’ll never learn from anything I’ve done Crow Jane has been a character in songs for many years....it would be interesting to know her origin. (she is never a kind and faithful woman). |
Two Gallants – Waves of Grain Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think you guys have it right for the most part. It is certainly an indictment on the death of the American Dream, but I dont see it blaming Bush or any government of any era. I think it is blaming "we the people". We literally have paradise all around us and through fighting and scrambling for our slice of pie, paradise is withering away under our noses. Personal freedoms, our environment, the time to smell the roses....all things that are given up and soured by our pursuit of a false american dream sold to us by politicians, the clergy, and con men. But what when your fields are all rotten, your waves of grain, amber waves of grain? |
Two Gallants – Las Cruces Jail Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree with the Billy the Kid idea that Skunkfish put forth...the number of dead, the small wrists, the restless .45....etc. This song is great and it changes pace so often that it is hard to nail down. It goes from slow to fast to slow and back to fast again....a great ride and great lyrics. |
Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics | 17 years ago |
If any of you can ever find the NPR version of this song....get it. The lyrics are slightly different in parts, but it is easily one of the best songs I have EVER heard in my life. Great lyrics, great imagery, sounds beautiful....this song is perfect. |
Asleep in the Sea – Dance On Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I like this song alot....I think it speaks for itself. |
Page France – Junkyard Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree Tarks....all around. |
Page France – Jesus Lyrics | 17 years ago |
There was a Detroit radio station appearance where Nau says that he was raised as a christian and that it flavors the imagery in his work. He doesnt consider Page France to be a christian band or his songs to be "religious" in nature. That said, I think this song totally revolves around the biblical Jesus. Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding feast...use that as context for the "wine". Jesus had experience with thieves in the bible, but it was during his trip to the temple in Jerusalem that he was angered by the money changers....causing him to say "You are turning my Father's house into a den of thieves". Use that as context for the thieves. Roman Soldiers - you know that story!.....(on the cross, he actually got a spear in his side). Use that as context for the "soldier and the sword in his side". Now picture Jesus, after resurrection (or his trip to hell) coming up through the ground. Upon his return he throws a celebration that everyone (including his enemies) is invited to. I think this song "personifies" Jesus....in a whimsical way. Great song. |
Page France – Orange Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I love this song....it was on many a "Spring" mix disc that I made this year. Was this even on an album? Either way, thanks for posting it! Michael Nau is a caveman in a spaceship. |
Page France – Chariot Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think it is "When we're all UNSAVED" This song is filled with religious imagery....the Chariot in question is taken straight from the bible. This song seems to be based on the Rapture or Armageddon itself. That said, I think that mulmo alread stated that Page France isnt a "religious band". Michael Nau grew up in a religious home and so alot of his imagery comes from that perspective. If you think about it, whether you are christian or not, Jesus is a symbol of "sacrifice", heaven is a symbol of "paradise", Mary is a recognizeable "mother"...... Page France uses nature and recognizeable imagery in their songs to perfection. Hello Dear Wind was the best album of 05.....get yourself a copy and do yourself that favor! |
Page France – dogs Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Goes down like a shout and up like a PRAYER" "In the Ocean's evening GUSTS" I could be wrong on those two, but Im pretty sure those are the right lines. This is such a great song....thanks for posting it! To me, this song is about a guy in love with both nature, and a woman. Not only does he pay tribute to the wonder of the natural world (a world that he is knowingly an intimate part of), but he has the perspective to see through the "crappier" aspects of life and to see the beauty of the love he shares with his partner. He recognizes that through that love, and the "nature" of things....they will always be together (just like they always have been). I think it may be a live version (a Detroit radio station appearance) where Michael Nau sings "Who will have the both of us?" as the last line....but Im not sure about the studio version right now. This song is a "Perfect 10".....give it a listen or two. |
Jane's Addiction – Kettle Whistle Lyrics | 19 years ago |
What makes a poor baby Older than a rich one? I love that line. |
Ben Harper – Diamonds on the Inside Lyrics | 19 years ago |
When I saw Ben in concert last month, this was the best song out of alot of great songs that he performed. I am also a big fan of the line "Tell me why the first to ask' is the last to give every time" |
Ugly Casanova – Cat Faces Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It is either the guy from Holopaw or Califone. Edgar doesnt and didnt ever exist. |
Ugly Casanova – Hotcha Girls Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Im glad that you are getting the world out about the hoax Pearl...one of the most persistant rumors I have ever heard. I also agree that the "We left our teeth marks on the barrell of a gun" refers to a very close brush with suicide....but I believe it to be an abstract statement and not some autobiographical statement from the songwriter. I dont know who wrote this song to be honest with you, but my guess is Tim Rutilli (sp). For those of you who know and love Modest Mouse and Ugly Casanova you should check out Holopaw and Califone....two of the other UC bandmembers main bands. Both are great, but so far I have found alot of good Califone. |
Blind Melon – Candy Says (The Velvet Underground cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It is a Velvet Underground song. Im not sure of the "meaning", but I think it is safe to say it is about a girl who is recognizing that she is worrying so much about small insignificant aspects of her life that she is no longer enjoying her life. |
System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The album came out right before 9/11, but I am with you haleyt....I get reminded of the towers and "Self Rightous Suicide" "When Angles deserve to die"....when I hear it too. Many bands "predicted" 9-11....Dead Prez and The Coup are another couple of groups who seemed to have "terrorist and airplane" themes in pre Sept 11th albums. Check out the cover of The Coup's first album....it was banned for obvious reasons, but came out before the terrorist attacks. |
System of a Down – B.Y.O.B. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
People who slam a band or artist for speaking their mind are ignorant. Historically it has been the artists who have been at the forefront of most popular movements. Secondly, it is never "unpatriotic or unAmerican" to question ANYTHING in a democracy. It is a sad state of affairs when we have citezens who dont know their own rights telling other citizens they are wrong for expressing theirs.... We dont need the sheepdogs when the sheep police themselves! Keep up the good work! |
Tool – Eulogy Lyrics | 19 years ago |
mdevay has it nailed down about Hicks....except the part about Bill Hicks being the head of Sacred Cow. That honor is reserved for Kevin Booth, Bills friend since age 13 and the man who introduced Bill to stand-up comedy and who played guitar on some of Bills songs, and also produced alot of Bills work through Sacred Cow Productions. Kevin Booth is the man and we would all be lucky to have a friend in someone who was like the friend Kevin IS to Bill... www.sacredcow.com www.infowars.com |
Wesley Willis – Eazy-E Tried to Kill Me (feat. Pimp Daddy Welfare) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The version I heard was called Eazy E tried to kill me. It was done with Pimp Daddy Welfare and he had lines mixed in with the Wesley Willis lines above. They both knew he was dead. |
Wesley Willis – I'm Sorry I Got Fat (I Will Slim Down) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is one of the best Wesley Willis songs out there. I think if you look deeply at the song, you will see that he is appologetic for his weight gain. |
GG Allin – Bite It You Scum Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Well said Halo. GG Allin was as real as any musician I have ever seen. He was truly a man who lived by his own rules from beginning til the end....the rest of you spine jockeys could be so unlucky! |
GG Allin – Carmelita Lyrics | 19 years ago |

GG Allin – Die When You Die Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Youve got cancer so go fuckin die - if you got Aids spread it around and face the lie. That is the line. GG Allin rules....word to your mother. |
Tool – Bottom (Demo version) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Anyone who would question the place of Henry Rollins in musical history is a fool. This song is great and I think it is about hitting bottom. You dont look surprised. It is about being broken and bittered by life and losing everything.....and how it forces you to be fearless (what do you have to lose?) and forces you to redefine yourself in those moments of fearlessness and numb wisdom. |
Califone – Silver & Gold Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is the old Christmas song covered by a great band. The lyrics are great and the song is cool enough that if you liked the old one you will like this version too...but if you never heard the original, you wont even consider that it was an old christmas carol. |
P.O.D. – Abortion Is Murder Lyrics | 19 years ago |
When POD become doctors or women I will listen to their medical opinions concerning womens health. You can believe what you want to about abortion, but I think more people should fight for the power to make personal choices about their future and their health. You dont need government or religion dictating what you can do to your bodies. If the Mormons were the ruling power would you want them dictating how you christians live your lives and what you are allowed to say, drink, think, or smoke? How many Pro Live Atheists do you know? Keep your Jesus off My Penis and keep your Bible off my Balls....Keep your prayers out of my ears and your crosses off my walls....you can keep the virgin mother and the ressurrection too....keep your Jesus off my penis and Ill keep my penis off of you. Keep your Jesus off my Penis - Eric Shwartz |

If it is pavement, could you explain to me what that means? |
Modest Mouse – Perfect Disguise Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I love both versions, but prefer "Chemical Eyes" |
Modest Mouse – Styrofoam Boots/It's All Nice on Ice, Alright Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Peter was a disciple who was one of Jesus' most loyal friends. "You are Peter, and upon this rock I shall build my church"....or some shit! I havent read the whole bible and Im not a christian but I know that much...I would also be curious to learn this and how the monkey comes in to play. Also, read 3 posts up for my awesome Manna and gas interpretation! |
Clutch – Eight Times Over Miss October Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Helmet – Unsung Lyrics | 19 years ago |
weird to see all of the comments on this song are within a month of now. I think I got this album 12 years ago and while this is probably the most famous Helmet song, I know it was the song that got me into Helmet. |
Helmet – Exactly What You Wanted Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is great...we had it on the jukebox at the bar I worked at...this is one to crank up. |
Helmet – Wilma's Rainbow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I could be wrong, but I thought it was " Honesty, a book you read once...I bet you think it rhymes" Either way this is a great song by a great band |
Jedi Mind Tricks – I Who Have Nothing Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Great Sample...this is the song that I used to get my gf into Jedi Mind Tricks |
Jedi Mind Tricks – The Deer Hunter Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is another great JMT song. Another example how even if you dont like ANY of the songs on the album, the intros are worth the money! |
Jedi Mind Tricks – Rise Of The Machines Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is my favorite Jedi Mind Tricks song. The lyrics are great and the Mike Tyson intro is priceless. I want to eat his children....all praise to Allah! |
Immortal Technique – Creation And Destruction Lyrics | 19 years ago |
he said that he "can do no wrong" not "no harm" Immortal Technique is great. Industrial Revolution and Bin Laden are my favorites. other rap groups of this vein: The Coup, Dead Prez, Paris, Jedi Mind Tricks |

Fugazi – Argument Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think what he is saying "basicaly" If we were to say, overthrow the government , and we did it by violent means (as opposed to asking nicely I guess) Our violence is no better than the governments violence. If Fugazi is the reason that the music business is bad, then flys are the reason for garbage. Fugazi doesnt want some guy who has never written a song to decide "what the next single will be". They dont make T shirts or sell merchandise, all of their DC shows go to charity and the money they use to support themselves and their tour comes from 10 dollar tickets and 8 dollar CDs. Ian puts his records out on his own label too, so if he did want to write a song about 9/11 he doesnt have to have someone tell him he cant say that. Yep sounds like the reason we have Ashlee Simpson to me MetalFace! |
Fugazi – Song #1 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It is a song about Henry Rollins - Ians good friend since childhood- coming back to DC after he had joined Black Flag. Many of the straight edge punk elitists were disappointed in Henry because the Flag guys drank and smoked pot..etc Many of them also accused Henry of selling out because he left the DC scene to be in a "big rock band" and felt he had abandoned his roots. Black Flag was famous for having long hair at a time when long hair "was for hippies". Ian toured with Black Flag alot...often paying his own way and providing security as well as being a roadie. Great Band! |
Fugazi – Waiting Room Lyrics | 19 years ago |
One of the best bass intros ever....if you like this song you will love many other Fugazi songs. The RHCP cover is very good, but the original will always be the best. |
Fugazi – Shut the Door Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It is about a man who is overcome by the loss (maybe death) of his girlfriend/family member (probably GF) He has to break through the depression/fog to breathe He has to shut out all distractions to be able to think straight...etc shes not moving....doesnt mean an actual death I dont think...it is him trying to convince himself to stop waiting for her and "shut the door so I can leace" is another opposite that is begging her memory to leave so that he can move on. This is my favorite song by Fugazi...if you can check out the version of this song on "Instrument" the Fugazi DVD....It very well could be the best live video I have EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE! He uses the seemingly opposite terms (I burn a fire to stay cool) to kind of illustrate his temporary "insanity" |
