Bright Eyes – Four Winds Lyrics 17 years ago
also, as one of those people on an ivy league moon, i think that's a really appropriate phrase. a lot of the time life here feels like being in outer space.

The line "slouching toward bethlehem" is a reference to the W.B. Yeats poem in which he writes: " And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?" The poem (and particularly those two closing lines) serves as a comment on the way that society "progresses" without dignity or even really improving on anything before it. (the whole "widening gyre" thing at the start of the same poem). Good call, Conor.

does anyone else get uncomfortable when people try to 'out' each other with eating disorders? I defintely can understand and accept the references in conor's lyrics but I get a bit weird when people try to attach them to specific people (ie. him, his friends). Having had an eating disorder and been in treatment for it I always get a bit skiddish when people play the "who's anorexic" game. It's probably just me being overly sensative but it seems to degrade the complexity and horror of the experience and ultimately it's something exceedingly private. I'm not sure where i'm going with all of this...maybe i just wanted to suggest that it's a bit flippant to diagnose based on lyrics. Wow. i REALLY didn't mean to grand-stand here. My apologies. And oh, yeah, it is a great song.

St. Vitrus Dance is a medical condition that Andy Warhol suffered from where your body goes into spasms that can be quite painful...in fact, Warhol was kept in the house with his mother for most of his childhood because of this condition--so maybe britt daniels is making an allusion to warhol? (fits with the surrealism and the evocation of gay love)

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Me and Mia Lyrics 19 years ago
so i have to admit i had a really important moment when i first read about this song on this website. I had fallen in love with this song after a listening to it on repeat for a long car trip but hadn't really paid attention to the lyrics so when i got home i looked them up here. realizing that the song was about eating disorders completely shook me: I've struggled with various forms of EDs for a few years and when i read this song had just gotten to a slightly better place with it all. What really scared me was that i could feel so connected to a song subconsciously that was very much about the type of life i'd been living without identifying it. Was the eating disorder so much a part of me that i couldn't even hear the real meaning in the song?
The line: "cigarettes and speed for living/ sleeping pills to feel forgiven" for some reason held some of the most powerful associations for me. The idea of needing to feel forgiven was so profoundly important to me (still is) and was one aspect of recovery that none of my doctors seemed to bring up (despite the newly formed dependence on sleeping pills, ironically). I realize that I'm just rambling on about myself and that this is adding nothing to helping others to interpret the song. I guess the very cliched moral of my story is just that sometimes song writers are able to capture truths that try to overlook.

as close to a perfect song as you can get.
according to itunes i've played this song 588 times in the last year--a bit obsessive, yes, but the song deserves it.
CANNOT wait for the new LP!

when i saw them perform this in concert this kid next to me screamed out "this is the song of our fuckin generation!"
it kind of is, though.
you gotta see them live! even though their equipment was breaking down and they were all wet and cold from a snowstorm and they only played for about 45 minutes, it was the best show i've ever seen.

i heard that this song might be about timory hyde, a girl who fell out of a window on her 22nd birthday and died--her friend who survived the fall said he suspected this was about her and that she had some connection to ted leo. She also has another amazing song written about her by OKgo called "return" that is absolutely heartbreaking
