Joanna Newsom – Sprout and the Bean Lyrics 16 years ago
Her lyrics are very open to interpretation, perhaps her usuage of myth, religion and naturalism is what makes it difficult to conclude the song's meaning. although, I do believe she is speaking of coming to terms of an abortion.

The beginning line reads:

I slept all day
awoke with distaste
and I railed,
and I raved

Think of a bird being born. Usually they break out of their eggs chirping and flapping their featherless wings. It could very represent how she's feeling inside, of suddenly having deal with her decision.

That the difference between
the sprout and the bean
is a golden ring,
it is a twisted string.

Here she is stating her reason for having to choose to abort the pregnancy. That it is easier for someone who's in a union to continue with the pregnancy as oppose to someone who isn't.

And you can ask the counselor;
you can ask the king;
and they'll say the same thing;
and it's a funny thing:

Here she states her dilema or the irony. She's trying to get a sense of direction about what she should do, but even those who are wise (king) and tend to know (counselor) are just agreeing with her. Thus she states "it's a funny thing,"

Should we go outside?
Should we go outside?
Should we break some bread?
Are y'interested?

Here's were it gets a little fuzzy, because of the openess of the questions. I feel she's making a reference to religion. Maybe trying to come into terms of her decision. Breaking bread has a religious significance and she states it further in the next few lines.

And as I said,
I slept as though dead
dreaming seamless dreams of lead.

When you go away,
I am big-boned and fey
in the dust of the day,
in the dirt of the day.

and Danger! Danger! Drawing near them was a white coat,
and Danger! Danger! drawing near them was a broad boat,
And the water! water! running clear beneath a white throat,
and the hollow chatter of the talking of the Tadpoles,

who know th'outside!
Should we go outside?
Should we break some bread?
Are y'interested?

The last 4 verses are simply her coming to terms with the complications of an abortion, of how she will feel, of how disheartened she'll be, perhaps have thoughts of suicide. I think the reference of bread is used to ease her sadness, like in the scripture where Paul was aboard a ship that was in danger of being driven upon the rocks. The crew was becoming disheartened, and Paul encouraged them to eat, giving them bread.

The water running down a white throat is reference to her sorrow, her inability to speak, feeling mute and therefore unable to communicate.

I could be wrong. I first thought the song was about a miscarriage, but I think it is really about abortions.

Beck – Lost Cause Lyrics 18 years ago
The first verse Beck describes two things; the breakup and the bitterness of it

“sorry eyes cut through bone” describe how it feels to hear the other person wanting out. They can apologize all day, but in the end, it hurts. His reference to the words “ cut through bone” helps us understand this, I mean our bones gives us structure, without it we’re just skin on the floor and this is how much damage that person’s words have caused. The next line states how it’s so hard to let go, even when someone wants to be left alone. The last two lines, followed by the chorus, is very bitter. Beck is simply saying, sure you’ll feel the pinch from the breakup, and you’ll find someone new, but in the end you’ll never find what you’re looking for. Thus, why we hear him say “you’re a lost cause” as you can see, Beck only sees negativity, as anyone would from a breakup, it’s beautiful.

The second verse supports what Beck claims as the other person being “a lost cause”. The lines “there’s so many people you use to know…” is his way of asking himself how can someone come to know so much about somebody else, and then vamoose?. “this town is crazy” is his way of expanding that question to others like that person. His answer or conclusion in the end is “nobody cares” which is a very blunt answer, because he’s assuming no one cares- again, more bitterness.

The song takes a turn in the last verse, it’s sort of a twisted reality check for him. He states “I’m tired of fighting” meaning he knows the relationship can’t be salvaged, so he agrees with the breakup, but with that comes again that bitterness, the next few lines is his way of saying you’ll end up with someone who’s not going to be watching over you, nor will they be there for you. The sarcastic line “is that what you thought love was for?” is him chuckling saying, who needs that kind of stuff when it comes to love?

I think what I like the most is the way he chooses to drag certain words like “wounds” “Bones” “go” He highlights them. Overall, the song is great and I like how you can sort of hear him exhaling in the end, like it's over. the song is over, the relationship is over, i've let my emotions out. Anyways that’s my meaning.

The Walkmen – All Hands and the Cook Lyrics 18 years ago
Why do I get the impression that Hamilton is singing about the south? Or maybe the song directs to the farmers we've yet to come to really understand. I don't know, but it has something do with work and being disapproved by the big man, regardless of how hard you work.

The Walkmen – Another One Goes By Lyrics 18 years ago
In my own opinion, both songs are great. You can't take away credit from the band that made the song, in this case Mazarin did a great job of creating it. And, as i'm a walkmen fan, i love the way they covered it.

Keane – Can't Stop Now Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a wake up song for those who often tend to put others before themselves. It's a simple message that tells them to put themselves first, accomplish the things you had set, and then worry about others. I strongly relate, as I have for many years been always trying to help people, but in the process I realize I myself wasn't getting anywhere in life, no one was around to help sometimes and so it made me feel like taking care of myself first.

Keane – Everybody's Changing Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm 26 Gabigs, I know what you mean. I started hearing this song a while back ago. This song is exactly about "progress" whether it's your own or someone else. Sometimes we change, causing our perception of how we use to see things. Or sometimes, it's others who are changing and you're simply watching them drift away. The part about the light reflects this, as as you watch everyone change, you won't like it, but you'll accept it because that's reality and you'll move on "fading into a beautiful light" I think the word beautiful is used because it means you've understood how life works.

Jay-Z – 99 Problems Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm no rap fan, though I do love good hip hop, and by far this is only album in the rap world that has stood out to me. When I first heard this song I automatically took it for what it was, he's got all these problems and a girl aint one because truly, if you're dealing with so many things a girl problem is the last thing you want to deal with, so when he says "if you're having girl problems, i feel bad for you son" I really understood what he meant. If you really think about it, when you step back, you'd realize girls aren't just worth stressing out over, i'm sure the same goes for women about men. Overall, just think, worry about your problems and worry about intimate relationships last. We saw this through Jay z's world. Just my two cents for what Ramius said, he really hit it on the dot.

The Walkmen – What's In It For Me Lyrics 19 years ago
I call this album, perfect timing, because i'm going through some relationship problems, and this album has helped me realize that things happen, and so I should just let it everything settle down. This is a song that difinitely points that out to me. Such a great song, especially when The Rat kicks in, it's like a continuation of what happens next.

The Walkmen – The Rat Lyrics 19 years ago
The song documents the process of recovering from ANY type of relationship. It's not about a breakup, not at all. It's about a woman backstabbing him, a best friend maybe doing him wrong, the fact is he hates this person now, thus the title (the rat) and he was in the process of moving on, until that phone call came in. You think that you'd be pretty upset if your cheating g/b friend called you to borrow money, this after they had just cheated on you.

Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics 19 years ago
Everyone pretty much sum up the song really well. Just wanted to say that the "lies" part is the voice of those who refuse to believe what he is saying. He's pretty much telling everyone to stay awake, that they'll be okay, you'll live, but everyone have been pounded with the idea of death if you don't sleep that they're saying liar, that's not true.

Overall, such a great song, such a great album.
