Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – Dragonfly Pie Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I agree with a lot of this user's ideas, but this is how I would do it: "Of all my stoned digressions Some have mutated into the truth Not a spoof You are the born expression of all your parents' flaws Which you parsed There's no Oz Can't be what you oughta be Gotta be what you wanna be Take it with pride and Like a dragonfly Dragonfly wants a piece of pie Be he is so strung out Shake me off the knife because I want to go home (x4) Cursed to being named after jazz songs Highschool principle Show and tell Preach and yell Ghostly Iraqi and starship Ghostly ???? van Gogh No more signs No more lines Can't be what you wanna be Gotta be what you oughta be Take it with pride and Like a dragonfly Dragonfly wants a piece of pie But he is so strung out Shake me off the knife because I want to go home (x4)" The one thing I'm not sure about is the "ghostly ???? van Gogh". Doesn't sound like any word I've ever heard. At first I thought I heard "I, Tina" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Tina) |
The Avett Brothers – The Weight of Lies Lyrics | 15 years ago |
At first I thought this song was about a gay man in a sham marriage. In the second verse he's telling everyone he knows about his homosexual affair after evading it for a long time. When he sings about how "the words ("the worst thing that a man can do is draw a hungry crowd") mean so much to him", he is implying that he does not regret outing himself. But I'm not really sure. |
Hawksley Workman – Stop Joking Around Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I am somewhat ashamed to admit that this song made me cry, because they played it at the end of the episode of Scrubs where J.D. (Zach Braff) found out his dad (John Ritter) died. of course, this was after the deaths of both John Ritter and MY father :[ anyway, it's a pretty good song. |
Oh No! Oh My! – Jane Is Fat Lyrics | 17 years ago |
what's to get? we're all fat. |
Tilly and the Wall – Nights of the Living Dead Lyrics | 17 years ago |
@ ghost love, the only reason everyone loves this song is because everyone in the world besides you and me is a stupid goth. rest of the album > this song |
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The Toro and the Toreador Lyrics | 17 years ago |
great song but I think where you have "and abandoned shy", it might be "an abandoned shrine" (at least that's what it sounds like to me) and "aimed on dying" might be "anodyne" I could be wrong great song though |
The Tragically Hip – It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken Lyrics | 17 years ago |
a face so full of meaning as to almost make it glow :D |
Camera Obscura – Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken Lyrics | 17 years ago |
oh. by the way, now that that "you can't stare at girls while holding a boy's hand" lyric is up for grabs, I call dibs. now I just need to form a band. |
Camera Obscura – Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken Lyrics | 17 years ago |
haha, because of her accent, I thought she was saying "you can't stare at girls while holding a boy's hand", a lyric which I prefer to the actual by just a MASSIVE AMOUNT. that was the only thing that kept me listening to this song :( |
Camera Obscura – I Love My Jean Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song is so perfectttt |
The Mountain Goats – Pale Green Things Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song adds incredible depth, almost a whole new dimension to the album John, in the very closing lines of this, the last song, reflects upon the death of his abusive stepfather, thinking of a happy moment they shared, when his stepfather showed a humanity and a vulnerability John would not have otherwise been privy to. it's moments like that shared between people who generally disagree that make all the time spent in anger and hatred seem like a tragic waste. I feel kind of bad that I'm only just discovering this now; when the album came out I thought it was just a sort of sad pop album. John Darnielle is a truly unique talent. as for the "pale green things", I prefer timbo's explanation, though JulyJuly's idea about the juxtaposition of new life with death does make sense as well |
The Decemberists – Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
providing this song takes place during the American Civil War, I think the "stone walls" line might be a pun :D |
Page France – Jesus Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this is NOT a Christian song! Jesus does not live in the ground and I'm pretty sure Christians are not allowed to dance and get drunk with him. I think there's something in the Bible about that. this is about 'Jesus' as a unifying figure of love and happiness, and not some big, boring religious icon. whether they are trying to say that there is Christ outside of traditional religious belief (comma splice) or using Jesus as a metaphor and saying we shouldn't need religion to come together and love one another is anyone's guess. personally I prefer the latter explanation |
The Beatles – Yellow Submarine Lyrics | 18 years ago |

XTC – Dear God Lyrics | 18 years ago |

The Decemberists – Cocoon Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Believe it or not, it's my favorite Decemberists song, too. It's all over the place. There are so many feelings and so many images it'd be hard to extract one meaning from it. "waiting for somethig to startle... to shake us from gravity's pull" Beautiful. |

The Decemberists – The Legionnaire's Lament Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this is the saddest song I've ever heard. :( probably because I'm so familiar with homesickness, but regardless, this song really strikes a chord in my big ol' heart. |

The Futureheads – The City Is Here For You To Use Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Neutral Milk Hotel – Song Against Sex Lyrics | 19 years ago |
the first verse is about him kissing another man, and everyone freaks out about it he says "i knew the world was over", and then goes on to describe the hubbub as the world ending quite literally that's what i think anyway! |

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The Angels' Share Lyrics | 19 years ago |
anyone else feeling that the demo version (available at TedLeo.com!) of this song is better than the album version? the album version fails miserably in capturing the grizzly badassitude of the beat in this song. dang, is it fresh. |
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The One Who Got Us Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |
for this song Ted ditches allegory and metaphor, and puts it to you plain and bluntly: bitch is worried for his tired country. love love love this song! yay Ted! |
Iron & Wine – Sunset Soon Forgotten Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this is my favorite song on Our Endless Numbered Days! though i'm not really sure what it's about. seems to me like a generic love song, but then he's all talking about forgetting the sunset and stuff... dang, Sam! i still love you. |
Iron & Wine – Jezebel Lyrics | 19 years ago |
this song is just lovely. i think it actually is about talking dogs and a man with the astounding ability to wait for extended periods of time. that is what i think. |
The Decemberists – I Was Meant for the Stage Lyrics | 19 years ago |
just gorgeous. colin is a true wizard. this song is quite obviously about a stage performer who believes he was meant for the stage. i don't think there'll be any argument there. meloy has to be one of the greatest songwriters of our time. he just hasta! |
