The Beatles – Yellow Submarine Lyrics 18 years ago
Under the influence of marijuana, it's very apparant that this song is about perfect working communism.

"As we live a life of ease, every one of us is all we need; sky of blue, sea of green, in our yellow submarine."

Nine Inch Nails – The Great Below Lyrics 18 years ago
Amazing. To me, it is about suicide. It's about accepting and feeling this death, but still having an inkling of wondering whether that meaningful person, that reason you stayed alive, will come with you or move on.

And they don't. They get along fine in the future without you when you've killed yourself, you're just another place in the Great Below.

I think this song describes the son I had while I was still in high school. It does so perfectly.

Cannibal Corpse – Post Mortal Ejaculation Lyrics 19 years ago
This song definitely covers something I've fantasised about for a long time now - dying and coming back to life to rape people. Even if some can't understand the words of the brutally carnal voice that carries these frighteningly discomforting lyrics, I can definitely say that the smash in the face the music makes gets me every time. Even for those who can't yet understand Chris Barnes' words very clearly, they are truely amazing musicians nonetheless.

Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, KainTheDrow, that's a very interesting and loose interpretation. The CD is a story, but I still don't believe that the song would have much meaning unless the guy did die in The Downward Spiral. You know the part about "The deepest shade of mushroom blue, all fuzzy / spilling out of my head"?

Of course, it is quite possible that someone would survive a shot to the face (just check out ogrish.com), but I don't personally think that's how the story was meant to be interpreted.

This song is great, I needed a good laugh.

I love this song to death and all, but isn't the tune kind of mimicing Nirvana's "Come As You Are"?

Cannibal Corpse – Addicted To Vaginal Skin Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, this song turns me on, big time. I can understand people not liking it and all, though. To me, just about everything by Cannibal Corpse makes me want to jump around eccentrically and eat people.

Nine Inch Nails – Sin Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not sure if I'm exactly allowed to say this on here, but here goes:

You can get Sin from WinMX. Same with a lot of videos. I'm still searching for "Help Me I Am In Hell" and the full version of Eraser (half the video is under the filename "Fall apart.mpg"). They're both pretty great IMO, but "Eraser" just played on the same concept behind "Hurt". "Help Me I Am In Hell" was completely different; you should definitely give it a watch. Buy Closure. :)

Nine Inch Nails – Closer Lyrics 19 years ago
Heh, what sense would the second verse make? Maybe I just have to give it a re-read.

I found a new meaning to this song: I have a particular love interest who doesn't want to fuse with me, because she's a little afraid of bisexual guys. Specifically, she's afraid I'm going to cheat on her with another man. So, in trying to become one with her, I've also tried to purge all homosexual thoughts. Every time I get a boner for a guy in gym class, I break down and wish I could just fuck her, and maybe pretend she's a guy. :P

It's sort of about being really close to a point from which you can only get happier, but I'm slowly regressing. "Fuck you like an animal" is sort of an agressive, "alexandrian" solution to this.

What's everybody think? Am I crazy?

Joy Division – Digital Lyrics 19 years ago
You know, I find that kind of odd, because I always had an association between this song and suicide. I don't think I can explain it without coming off as an attention whoring melodramatic emo kid, though. Sorry.

Nine Inch Nails – The Great Below Lyrics 19 years ago
irate hippi chick, I think you're very right. But this song first and foremost means to be a narration of suicide. Someone once brought to my attention that these words read off just like I'd expect a death note too.

There's a girl who I'm in love with but refuses to feel the emotion back to me, because she's been numbed so far away. This song is the very first thing that's been coming to mind. Your explaination of the song pretty much did it for me. :)

Nine Inch Nails – Ringfinger Lyrics 19 years ago
The last words of the song are:

"I'm so tired I can't get to sleep, and the squeaking of my bed is right in time with the song that's repeating in my head. I just want you to know, when I do it I only think of you."

To me, that last part means that after all of this, he's still pretty obsessed over her, and masturbating. He only thinks of her when he does it, and the repetitive (annoying?) song on his head is playing with the squeaking and bouncing on his... bed. Yeah, I just restated that, but still.

Nine Inch Nails – The Wretched Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, I think of someone being hurt and the speaker introducing them to the gloomy real world. Sort of like people in prison, "Your life didn't turn out the way you wanted it to; you're one of us now". You're one of the wretched now.

Nine Inch Nails – Somewhat Damaged Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow.

Just a minute ago, I openned "The Fragile" in hopes of playing one or two songs that have been sticking in my head all day today. The result? This album is fucking genius. I can't skip through songs, needless to say. Somewhat Damaged is amazing, in that it has only four notes, two guitars, and a few synthesisers, but still the very fearsome simplicity of it sends a chill down my spine. Everything in this openning song I can particularly relate to. I've wanted so hard to be like the great people I know, and failled horrifyingly every time - because I found out they were utter horrid fiends like me. Now, I know, this is what it feels like.

Say Anything – Admit It!!! Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is brilliant. It can refer to any scene where kids try to be cool and popular, "adhering to a set of standards by a panel of unseen judges". An ex girlfriend of mine recently fell into the Hot Topic trends and I laughed in her face, right before thinking of this song.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – The New Stone Age Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is definitely about regret, and how a descision you made will destroy your life. "This is the feeling they warnned me about" hits home every time. Upon the little segment of my life that I got into OMD, I didn't have a special fondness with "We" songs (there's a female backup singer in harmony, for those who haven't heard this one) - I didn't have anyone that I became one with, and that had a special kind of bond and who would fall down with me, as this song goes. Reguardless, I love it.

New Order – Procession Lyrics 19 years ago
This is quite possibly the most beauitufl song I've ever heard. To me, it means that the singer is deeply in love with someone and their life but critisises their problems (which could be the reason s/he loves them - the whole "loneliness is lovely" thing). In my experience, I used this song when I was in love with a friend of mine who already had a boyfriend, and I didn't know if I liked what she was doing with her life, and her reasons for being combined to the guy of her choice. I couldn't get the image of them together out of my head ("Another picture but the scene / it's still the same /there is no room to move / or try to look away") and eventually.. yeah.

I think that this song is obviously about the fact that pigs have really lost their soul and humanity, and "serve and protect" based on flawed rules made by the government.

Devo – Beautiful World Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is utterly sarcastic (as devised by the music video), and most people don't realise that. The "for you" line really illustrates that it's not a beautiful world for the singer, but to another's point of view.

What's very hard to understand about this song is the music video. It features Ku Klux Klan members (including women and children) with Plus and Minus symbols on them, walking around. In one shot, they're holding a giant picture of Ian.

I really don't believe it means much, though. I'm not sure if they were meant to be KKK members, but just general occultists. The Ku Klux Klan /did/ rip off their uniforms from Mideval wizards in europe.

Nine Inch Nails – Eraser Lyrics 19 years ago
Soneone told me that a song by Nirvana was about how they were raped by pop media, and I misheard her and believed she was talking about this song. With that in mind, it makes perfect sense.

Need you.
(Trent needs to be famous, or MTV needs Trent to make money)
Dream you.
(Trent dreams of being a rockstar, or MTV dreams of a product)
Find you.
(MTV "discovers" Trent)
Taste you.
(MTV gets a taste of what it's like to have such an awesome star making them money)
Fuck you.
(Trent realises that MTV just wants money and not to make fans happy)
Use you.
(MTV uses Trent for this purpose)
Scar you.
(Trent realises that media corporation is nothing of what it seems; more based on greed and money-loving)
Break you.
(same as above)

Of course, in this interpretation, the last verse doesn't make any sense at all.

Nine Inch Nails – The Perfect Drug Lyrics 19 years ago
I heard someone's interpretation that it was about abstainning from drugs, and the torture that going cold turkey-quitting gives you. Of course, with that in mind, the second verse ("You make me hard, when I'm all soft inside...") doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Nine Inch Nails – The Becoming Lyrics 19 years ago
Somehow, this song reminds me of an artificially modified human, changed and intergrated with computer parts (sort of like a person with cybornetic organs, muscles, brain parts, etc). The "No escape from this / My new consciousness" line is like his train of thought is being replaced by a digital/quantum computer.

The music really makes me think of this person (certainly in no relation to the character in TDS story) going on some kind of violent and unexpected rampage. Sort of like how these characters in movies (something like the mechanised people in "House of 1,000 Corpses") get completely insane, and start destroying people at absolute random. The ear-splitting music near the end gives kind of a high on this thought.

Of course, this explains all but the "I can try to get away, but I've strapped myself in" line. Unless, of course, he signed up for this.

FaaipDeOaid, the music video is seen on "Closure". It was really great, so I could assume that it /was/ copywright problems that disallowed putting it on the NIN website. Closure is coming out on DVD supposedly sometime between now and the end of eternity, meanning that perhaps someone could rip it and download it.

Nine Inch Nails – Reptile Lyrics 19 years ago
I disagree with LittleUrantiaGirl. "Piggy" and "Closer" was referring to a lover that he lost. The song is about a prostitute, as mentionned above. In the story of The Downward Spiral, the music at the end paints a picture of the main character realising that he has to commit suicide (as seen in the next song, The Downward Spiral). The music does a good job of such a scary realisation.
